Strength:
I liked the motor and the easy access for doing basic tuneups. Good size trunk. Simple interior controls and good exterior sight lines for driving. Good gas mileage.
Weakness:
Eats cv joints every 60,000km. Door handles break. Brake lines seize. Had the car from new and lasted 14 years. I put 405,000 km. and never touched the motor. Overall very pleased and am looking for 91-94 now with 200,000km to run for another 150,000kms Similar Products Used: 81Saab,Another 86 Jetta, 86Volvo740GLE, 84Caprice Stationwagon, Toyoto Van |

Everything I Love My Jetta! The V4 has lots of power and it drives tight. Every one that seems to be having problems with there Jetta are the ones who were made in Mexico. Mine was made in Germany, and I have had no problems with it other than the Sunroof going out and other minor problem. If you looking for a Reliable car with alot of power buy a Jetta. cornering,pick-up is great for a four cyl.Very basic to work on your self. gear ratio is nice and tight.
Weakness:
Many repairs.door handle are hard as hell to work, but that might be a good anti theft device The car is great. It''s quik, and handles GREAT.I,in the begining had some power problems. It was dangerously slow. After putting about 2000 dollars into it the guys at VW finally figured out that it was due to a stripped gear in the timing area. It was the gear that connects to the crank shaft. When the car would get timed by the mechanic, it would slip out of timing any were from two hours to two weeks later. All that i needed was a fifty-five dollar part.I kept the old one and mounted it.LOL.All in all I love the car. The int. is sweat except that there arn''t any cup holders. At 120000 miles it still kicks ass. Similar Products Used: hoarse |

Strength:
Easy, controlled handling, awesome red and blue dashboard and instrument panel lights, unique body-styling, nice paint.
Weakness:
Rough-shifting transmission, somewhat unreliable brakes, lint-collecting velour seats, rattle in doors. Overall, I love my Jetta. I got it brand new about 8 months ago. I love the unique, eye-catching body styling, the monsoon soundsystem (although installing subwoofers to go with the monsoon system as well as any of VW''s stock systems is an agony), and the easy handling. The Jetta is stable on the road and ALWAYS fun to drive. Despite that, it does have it''s setbacks. This past December (when the car was 6 months old and had LESS THAN 2300 miles... I don''t put much mileage on it) the automatic transmission got stuck on gear 1 and I was left stranded on the road with a car that would shift past gear one. The ENTIRE transmission was replaced after 6 months. Even with the newly installed transmission, the shifts are atrocious. Though intermittant, every shift, whether it is up or down, is extremely rough. There''s a thump with every shift when accelerating. The other major set back is the brakes. My braking distance is consistently increasing with every drive. I took it to the dealership twice to have the problem examined, and each time I was told everything was "NORMAL" or that it "met the company standards". Other than the disappointments for these two major components, the only other very minor problem is that lint sticks like CRAZY onto the velour seats. For anyone buying a VW in the future, invest in leather seats as they will save you a lot of cleaning agony. I have to clean my beige velour seats at least twice a week to keep them from looking disgusting. The Jetta is a well-made car without a doubt. Hopefully VW will figure out how to make an automatic transmission in the future so that their cars will exceed the competition''s standards and this will bring their cars to a level of superiority unmatched by any other comparable car. None for those who want a car that work!!
Weakness:
Anything to do with the electrical system: windows, locks, sunroof (they claimed that was my problem) trunk latch. Head lights were very dim and not good on the back roads I drive. Basically I loved this car for 2 1/2 years before the first breakdown. It was not an ordinary problem and after reading the reviews I have traded it in. Luckily when it died I was at home, had it towed to the closest VW garage and they had it for four days before they told me they could not find the problem. So I moved it to a dealer that promised they could fix it and 1 1/2 weeks later they were still finding parts. Service with VW dealers is pathetic and they also blame the consumer. I did nothing to this car but the electronic systems started to malfunction and there were all kinds of problems. They gave it back to me with three new things wrong with it: dash lights out, brake light out, trunk latch not working, etc. Basically if you have a VW made in Mexico as I did and they still continue to make them there GET RID OF IT!! |

EVERYTHING ELSE! OK... here we go again... this is now my 3r time posting my complaints. Well, yesterday, I brought my car in for the 9th time since this past October. I have had my car for 15 months now and I have had nothing but trouble. This time it was for the following reasons: 1) The breaks were applying more force than I was onto the brakes (the dealer told me that there were no problems with the brakes) 2) I feel the transmission shifting up as well as down... this should not happen espescially because I have an automatic. 3) The front leftmost A/C vent is barely blowing any air... I was told that it is supposed to blow like that beacuse you don''t really need that vent anyways. 4) There is STILL an odor in my car like mold coming from the A/C...I was told that the parts needed to repair this were on national backorder... so I was told that in the meantime, I should just spray a can of Lysol Disinfectant into the air vents. 5) There was a rattling in my rear right door, I was told that this was very common, and that I needed to have my door lock contratraption insulated. I am so fed up with this B.S. from VW, the company sucks and they VERY rarely stand behind their product. Someone once told me that VW stood for Virtually Worthless... now I believe them. |

performance/handling (with the manual trans) solid feeling solid sounding great stereo big trunk
Weakness:
stock tires are decent in the dry and horrible in the snow it comes stock with only a tape player it needs more horsepower to be truly great I have read many reviews of previous jettas, and I am sad to see that many owner have had problems. I bought a 2001 jetta to use as a commuter car, and I absolutely love it. The 2001 was 2 years in to the new model lineup, and therefore, I feel many of the kinks of the 1999 may have been worked out. The GL model, comes standard with a 2.0 liter 115 hp inline 4 cylinder. I opted for the manual transmission, as any enthusiast should, and it really allows the car to take advantage of its lack of horsepower. If you cannot drive a manual, or you choose not to, I have heard that the automatic allows almost as much fun. In addition to having a solid-sounding, and feeling drivetrain. The jetta also seems to be free of rattles(13000 miles), and is an extremely solid car. The jetta sounds as if Volkswagen may be using more Audi parts than we are aware of. Also, a big problem with Volkswagens, seems to be the base price. Many complain that Hondas and Toyotas can be had for cheaper base prices, but remember that the jetta comes with ABS, front and side airbags, and with a great stock stereo system. |

Solid feeling car Good handling Large trunk Handles pretty well in inclement weather Heat and AC work very well
Weakness:
Doors rattle Transmission is noisy No power (especially on hills) Automatic Transmission shifting is jerky (especially going from 1st to 2nd.) Paint job sucks Eats tires Front seat adjustment knobs are horribly difficult to use (what happened to levers?) Needs more intermittent wiper speeds (they are usually either slower or faster than I need) I bought this car brand new and at first I loved it. However, after almost 6 years, I can sympathize with many other reviews that I''ve read here. I have had many problems with this car. I have a friend who bought a ''96 Golf and had so many problems with it she got rid of it after a year. Maybe it was a bad year at VW. Anyway, as much as I like the way the car looks, I wouldn''t buy another VW again---too unreliable. Some of the problems I have had with the car: Transmission went at 75K Radiator fan went Replaced windshield twice in the first 3 years Had to replace oxygen sensor The thing eats tires like you wouldn''t believe (a mechanic at Sears told me that he sees a lot of VW''s that do this---Golfs, Jettas, etc.) Phlange was leaking coolant Had oil leaking Locks freeze in cold weather Paint job sucks--after three years I had scratches and clear coat was peeling off in spots Tape player broke All in all, I am now shopping around for a RELIABLE car. To anyone thinking of buying a Jetta---you will have it in the shop at least twice a year. And be prepared to replace tires every 30,000 miles. Similar Products Used: None |

a/c doesn''t work but the window roll down wonderfully, bogs down with 4 adults in it buts it''s only a 4banger, door handles and locks break rather frequently (can''t lock the trunk anymore which causes theft problems), driver''s side mirror fell out and broke last week (good thing i''m not superstitious), mine doesn''t have a sun roof i love the car, great handling, nice n'' peppy, awesome smooth clutch action, looks great with a few accessories, Ricarro seats, Momo steering wheel/pedals, Euro front grill, not too much just tasty, great gear ratio settings, 260''000K''s and still going, though i think i''ve bagged it to the point of major repairs, needs new tires (probably 90% of my problems are due to this) new passenger front drive shaft, new bearings, shocks, burns a bit o'' oil on startup, had a problem with overheating and discovered it was due to a bad heat gauge not turning on the electric rad fan (cheap fix), and i replaced the entire exhaust system last year cause the previous owner had smashed out the cat converter for more hp. i''ve never had it break down to the point of not being able to drive it Similar Products Used: 1972 VW Westphalia, had to give the poor thing up for parts (loved that bus...''sob'') |
