Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

Sturdy, reliable so far, safe(airbags, 4 disc abs), fun to drive.

Weakness:

Oil consumption, 2 year 24k mile warranty(2002 owners will like the new 4 year 50k mile warranty)

I posted a review about my Jetta around a year ago. Now that my new car enthusiam is gone, and have driven it for 11 months and put 15k miles on it, I can be more objective. I still enjoy driving the car as much as I did when I got it. I have taken it for its scheduled services, and the only thing I fixed at the dealer was a burned out courtesy light bulb and a clogged windshield wiper jet. Other than that no problems. I still have the original brake pads on it but I had to do a wheel alignment recently due to the infamous NYC potholes. The alignment problem caused my front tires to wear unevenly, but I put them in the back so I dont notice any vibrations. Surprisingly compared to some other Jetta reviews that I read I have no problems, other than the oil consumption on this vehicle. However I check it every couple of thousand miles and add a quart of oil. VW says this is normal.

Strength:

highway acceleration kick ass braking system. it stops on a dime. Very Good handing response. Heats up really warm. Quiet interior

Weakness:

Gas mileage sucks..

I purchased my car on aug 15 2001 with 10 miles on it and now its jan 11 2002 and i already have 9500 miles on it. I have zero problems with my car so far. The jetta is awesome on the highway. It has so much acceleration when i drive on the highway, i have no problem pass up other cars. I have gone as fast as 125-130 mph. and at that speed when you press on the gas you still feel it boosting forward its incrediable. i use to own a 99 grandprix and my jetta will blow it away on the highway any day. Now if your in the city it handles beutifully over bumps. It has a smooth feel and ride. The car feels solid. Now as off the line drag racing it lacks some power between 0 and 40 mph after that you can count on the jetta to take over the road. And Dont forget i have 9500 miles and no problems yet. I hear so many bad reviews about jettas but not me so far. If i do run into major problems i will let you all know.

Weakness:

Customer Service Quality of workmanship Loud engine if you are driving 65+ on cement, asphalt provides a much better sound. Road handling gives a false sense of security. Very high center of gravity.

I initially got this car because I thought it was a great vehicle for the dollar - boy was I wrong. Yeah, it may look nice & drive nice for someone who isn''t used to driving German cars, but it has turned into one of the largest mistakes I have ever made. The first 10,000 miles on the car were a dream and then that''s when it turned into the nightmare that I have now. I''ve had electrical switch problems (preventing any interior dash lights from working), evaporating oil (especially on road trips), a glove compartment that I don''t even take to get replaced anymore. The car is a complete & total piece of sh*t. I''ve spent more money in repairs on this car then I have on any other car that I''ve owned. Since the beginning of this year, I''ve already put $500 in repairs into the car resulting from a faulty spark plug wire & the replacement of an oil pan. The mechancic and the local VW dealer (not Legend) both said that the oil pan itself is made of aluminum and that the plug is a heavier metal, so by doing normal routine oil changes, you strip the plug and either have to modify with an aftermarket plug (which VW doesn''t recognize) or replace the oil pan itself. The quality of workmanship is close to that of the early Hyundai''s. Do yourself a favor & don''t get one - it''s a headache from the time you sign the papers.

Strength:

It''s a good car so far. I''ve had it for just a little while and no problems with it yet except the first day I had it I noticed a grinding noise in the front passenger wheel. It turns out it was the bearings that needed to be greased! (That''s kina scary.) It''s a pretty good looking car. I like where the cup holders are located for easy access. The brakes on it are far better than any other car I have driven. Plus they''re all disc brakes so is easy to replace the shoes. The blue glowing dash lights look pretty cool and everything is pretty easy to find. I like the body style and the color is gorgeous. Not too mention all the airbags make it a safe ride. The smoothness of the ride I give about a 7.5 on a 10 scale.

Weakness:

I think this car lacks the power it needs to cost as much as it does. I know there are other models that have higher hp, but then the price goes higher as well. The gas mileage is not very efficient. I find myself filling up with gas at least once a week with Premium -- that gets pretty expensive. I haven''t had any service done to it yet, but I do have an appointment to have the oil changed tomorrow, which the guy I spoke with said will take about an hour and a half?? My grandma can change my oil faster than that. Although I like the color, the gloss on the car scratches way too easily. I have some scratch marks on my car just from taking it to the car wash!!?? Uh-Oh, better get Maaco. When the lease is up on this car, I don''t think I want to keep it.. I don''t think I would get another VW.. I think next time will be a honda.

Honda Accord-- was relatively the same size car and engine. I actually like the Honda better. The gas mileage was way better (about 450 miles a tank!!). The Honda had faster acceleration with the same

Strength:

- 1.8T engine - rims with luxury package - leather - looks

Weakness:

Heated seats (on level 5 you burn your ass and on 4 and lower, can''t feel anything) some creaks and a rattle in the door (likely due to Monsoon screw-up) cupholders are brutal, can''t change CD''s with cups in holder armrest is tiny for storage and gets in the way when shifting gears

This car is awesome. The new 1.8T with 180 HP has tons of pep. The ride is very smooth and the steering responsive. I was disappointed with the dealership, they tried to screw me by claiming to install an after market Monsoon, which ended up being 2 $50 Pioneer speakers and a 2 channel audiovox amp that sounded like crap. Had them take it out after I found out what they did and they refunded me my money. Very disappointed given all the great reviews re. the Monsoon. I haven''t had any problems yet with the car, it hasn''t been too good on gas, especially given the need to use premium fuel. I had a Wolfsberg Golf before and this is a huge improvement over the Golf (which by the way, I loved).

Strength:

+ 1.8t Engine - This thing is a gem. Milage went up after about 1500 miles, now averages about 28mpg in mixed city/highway. + Build - Very solidly built. No creaks or rattles. + Stereo - Get the monsoon, you must. + Safety - Airbags, ABS, traction control. Doesn''t get much safer.

Weakness:

+ Rear Seat room - There isn''t much.

So far, the jetta has given me 13,000 mostly trouble-free miles over the last year. I had the dreaded window regulator problem, which the dealer fixed the same day, and a check engine light incident, which was due to a gas cap not being on properly. So overall, a very solid car. Service has been mixed. Hamilton VW has been great about servicing and repairs when I had the regulator problem. I tried repeatedly to work with Princeton VW, since I work down the street from them, but they''re the rudest dealership I''ve ever encountered.

There is not one good thing I can say about this car when I compare it to all that has gone wrong!! The warranty is a joke!!

DO NOT BUT THIS CAR!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!! bought this car in March of 1999 and let me tell you I am with the rest of you who have experienced nothing but problems with this car. My car had barely 800 miles on it and I had to take it in for service because of the knocking noise it made when I drove. I was told that they did tests drove the car five times and that there was nothing wrong with it. The battery died on me about a year ago(the car was only a year old). The check engine light has been on for the past 7 months. Took the car to the dealer and again they told me there was nothing wrong with it. I decided to take the car to a private mechanic to have it checked and after several tests he found a default in one of the cylinders. It was a misfire that triggered the check engine light to go off. A few days after the light was gone it came back so back to the mechanic I went because I knew better than to take it to a VW dealer and he told me that it may be a problem with the motor or something. I am so fed up with this thing. The services is horrible, the car sounds like it''s going to explode, the windows(controls) do the opposite of what I want. The rugs are all messed up and do not stay put at all. The parts cost an arm and a leg. And you can''t trust these VW service providers for nothing. And I thought this would relieve the headache of having to constantly repair a car but obviously it has turned into a big nightmare and it stresses me out knowing that the car has several defects and I know it''s not in my head and no one wants to help. This is the first and definitely the last VW I will ever own. I told everybody I know to look elsewhere for a car because of the bad reputation VW has developed. Oh well maybe they should consider taking care of customer complaints instead of brushing them off. I am just so unhappy!!!

Model Reviewed: VW Jetta GLS 1.8T

Strength:

-Good European looks -The 1.8T engine has LOTS of pickup, this car is FAST -Smooth Ride -Comfortable seats -Blue dash illumination is very easy on the eyes -Cup holders... most don''t like where they''re at, but its in front of the dash vent, so when the AC is on, your cold drink stays cold... when the heater is on - your hot coffee stays hot. Ingenious! -Lots of handy Storage space -Crome shift-lever console - Nice!

Weakness:

-Small back seat (not an issue for me, since I''m driving!) -Puny Glove box (I''d rather an airbag be there than a place to accumulate more junk) -Bumper-to-bumper warranty could be more than 2/24K -Trunk does not "pop" open, and its a bit heavy when you have a full load of stuff to put in there.

This has been a great car so far. It looks good, its comfortable, the steering is responsive and rides very smooth. It has been in the shop three times, but for minor problems. One - the window regulator for the front passanger window went out twice, and the ignition coil went out once. My car was repaired within three hours for the windows, and in a day for the ignition coil. I have heard horror stories from VW dealers, but apparently I found a good one and they are very efficient and friendly. Other than that, I love this car, and it looks like a keeper. It''s more expensive than a Honda or Dodge Neon, but thats comparing apples to oranges - VW has sleek european styling and German engineering for an all-around better car
