Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

Exterior, interior, engine and handling.

Weakness:

2 year warranty not even fair considering VW changed to 4 year a month after I bought. Somewhat rough idle (possible price for power). Premium fuel necessary and you do not get the best mpg. Don’t care, love the car. Two sets of golf clubs in the trunk sometimes a challenge. Black gets dirty but gives me a chance to make it pretty again. Tan floor mats a problem keeping clean, knew that coming in.

2001 Jetta GLX with sport package. Jet-black with tan leather. I bought this car with all available options after a great deal of research. Dealer matched the carsdirect.com discounted price. This car is sharp looking, has every feature a car owner could want and is fast and easy to handle. It amazes me every time I hit the pedal at any speed or rpm. As one review says, it is almost too fast. Yes the lights are cool at night, the stereo rocks, the up graded cup holders are fine. I don’t think there are too many cars on the road that can compare to its looks, performance or price paid with all the extras. All this is coming from a former GTO, SS and Mustang 2+2 owner as benchmarks for performance. Not to mention SUV''s, Toyota''s, Mits. and Nissans to compare against other imports.

Strength:

good power and handling

Weakness:

burns oil, VW service, Maint. costs

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!!! unless you want headaches and to pay for numerous repairs. (Girlfriend''s car) It also burns more oil than fuel. After complaining until I was blue in the face, VW agreed to do a oil consumption test. (it is burning at 1.0 L per 1500 km) AND VW is saying this is NORMAL !! Brakes are shoddy. The caliber guide pin rubber boot comes undone and water gets in, rusts the pin and jams it in place. If you use the pads to its limits -- the pad will slip down into the caliper and bye bye car! My girlfriend almost killed herself when the wheel locked due to the above problem. Still VW does not admit it is a design flaw. Called Transport Canada to have recall instigated with no luck. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. Worst dealer in the world "VW St-Hyacinthe, Quebec"

Strength:

Excellent power and torque in VR6! There is all ways power at any RPM. Good mileage if you don''t hammer it all the time (24 mpg city, 35-40 mpg highway). Seats keep you comfortable for hours, literaly. REAL European feel-firm ride (if you like that)

Weakness:

Can be very expensive to repair. A trip to the dealership can cost you over $300 for the smallest of repairs. Fit and trim quality severely lacking. Squeeks and creeks all to often. The stereo sound in this model is terrible. Requires premium fuel. *Ignition Power Control Coil will only last about 80,000 kms - Over $500 to repalce and is only available at the dealership.

I really love this car. The power and handling can really give you a rush. The VR6 motor is really something, but is very expensive to repair(if you happen to have any repairs on it, very dependable motor). Since this is a performance car, the parts that keep it going are expensive (rear brakes $600, shocks, oil filter is $30.00 CAN, ect.) There is plenty of room for four and five can fit easily. All seats are extremely comfortable. Front seat easily fit a friend that is 6''-6" and 320 lbs! Since the car''s production was moved to Mexico, quality has really suffered. A lot of minor problems that will keep you going back to dealership for repairs at a eyepopping price. The 95 Jetta''s in red does not have clearcoat applied, therefore a lot of maintenance to keep a shine. A really fun car IF you keep up with all the maintenance.

Great little car. Was really worried about 85hp in the disel, but the turbo gets it moving. I pull 45mpg in town and 49mpg on the highway with a manual transmission. I drive the car hard and it has no problem keeping up, (although I miss the raw power of my last V8). I drive a road with lots of curves to work and the car makes driving fun. My wife convinced me to get the leather package and it was definately worth it (I also bought the alloy wheels and sun roof). I now have 10K miles on it, and I love this car. There is no road or engine noise and the trunk is massive for as small as the car is.

Strength:

Performance VR6 Economical from a fuel perspective Road handling Quiet Standard Features Excellent sound system

Weakness:

Power windows fail at $350 a pop in 18 months (two windows) Mass air flow sensor goes in under 2 years at $380. Spark plugs cost $129 a set and don''t last more than 2 years. Front end spoiler too low is shredded from tire stops in parking lots as well as pulling other front end plastic parts apart. Alternator & water pump went out within 12 months but these were covered by warranty. Front grill inserts pop out and have to be replaced regularly.

Overall my Jetta is a fine car from a ride, performance, econony standpoint. However, many expensive items on it have failed making the cost of ownership not covered by warranty of about $.05 per mile driven for repairs.. In addition, plan on spending a lot of time gritting your teeth when you have to back the front spoiler off of a curb or tire block in the parking lot. You would think that find german engineering could have measured the height of these and made the front spoiler and inch higher. I am 54 years old, and I bought my Jetta because of my past experience with VW''s. This one has had some really good by some really bad points and I doubt I would ever by another one.

SOLID Reliable Good value Fun to drive Good milage

Weakness:

The break dust is frustrating, but a small price to pay.

My first NEW car. I had my 2000 GLS for 2+years and the ONLY thing that needed to be fixed (under warrentee) was the dash light switch. I got very good milage and loved driving it. The substance she referrs to, leaking from the doors, is the coating put on the inside of metal to resist moisture and corrosion. It is waxy and is easily removed. You may have noticed that so far I am writing in the past tense. Recently I was involved in an accident which totaled the front of my great little car. I WALKED AWAY. I''m getting ready to buy another one. I live in Maryland and the people and the service at the dealership are exemplary. I did my homework before and am taking nothing for granted now..that''s why I''m reading personal experiences. So far more good than bad..I''m on the right track.

Strength:

Economy & reliability. 600 kilometres to a 50-odd litre fill easily. Never let me down. Good sound system too - I''m fussy about sound quality and this stereo they put in it is made by Clarion (so the VW dealership tells me.) More on VW dealerships in the weaknesses section...

Weakness:

Extremely bumpy ride. I''m pushing 40 and a ride into downtown Toronto over the potholes, railroad tracks and streetcar tracks makes me feel like the Green Bay Packers have used me for a tackling dummy. The "power steering" is very very stiff - my dad''s diesel VW, complete with heavier diesel engine, is easier to steer than this thing. VW service sucks. I have to get the car checked at a VW dealership to abide by their warranty. A simple oil change has my sitting in the raunchy beat-up 70''s-style waiting room at Don Valley Volkswagen for hours!! And the front tires always leak with the alloy rims. Always have. Always will. I''ve had these tires re-sealed more times than I can shake a stick at. And lousy trim. It always falls off - $40.00 will get it glued back on each time. And what''s with 7.5% financing when American-car dealerships are offering 0% over 48-month deals?

This has been an all-round reliable little car to drive. Too bad I was rear-ended in it. It likely will not be fixed. Should I stay with VW or go with a bigger American-made car where I don''t get jolted and jostled driving in???

great car for stock. awesome features: cool spoiler, dual exhaust, fog lights, sunroof

Weakness:

as far as 6 cylinders go, this one is pretty weak, but the new 2002 VR6s are going to be about 190 hp. electrical system isnt the best. we had to replace the motors in the sunroof and 3 of the 4 windows. NO GLOVE COMPARTMENT!?!

this car handles and accelerates great. much better than all those honda civics driving around. when locking the car, if you keep the key turned it will close all the windows and sunroof. car requires some upkeep, but once you get the right parts in, you should be set.
