Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

Trunk is big and the car looks good. That''s about it!

Weakness:

I may run out of space.....Transmission-rpm high in 2nd gear. cannot be fixed. The muffler system fell off the car and cost me big bucks. Cannot clean the alloys. The engine is beginning to corrode terribly. The engine is weak for the cars weight! Most recently, the car''s lights would not illuminate because the emergency brake would not retract to the down position. Alot of other electrical problems...oxygen sensor, dash lights coming on for no reason, tail lights (running lights)intermittant while driving. Oh I must mention that the car stranded me today when the starter decided to quit. This car only has 77K on it. Buy a Honda or a Nissan and save the headache.

I must say that I''m not suprised with the numerous reviews on the various VW''s posted on this site. My 97 Jetta has had alot of problems since purchase.

the jetta has a mighty engine, forget doing 40 mpg''s you''ll hit 60''s in a couple of seconds, but this turbo baby needs lots of gas. Seems to be more economic on highways

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!!! unless you want headaches and to pay for numerous repairs. I was so happy to find this website to let consumers know what a poorly made car the 1999 Jettas are. I found out that Volkwagen moved its plant to Mexico and all the 1999 Jettas and up were made there by people who made $2.00 an hour and the plant was eventually shut down that year for quality control. My car overheated 80 miles off the lot and had to be towed. Soon after that my sunroof fell in and I was unable to use it the whole summer because the part was on backorder from Florida. It then broke again and immediately after that my driver side window fell in along with the passenger window 2 months later. Eventually the two back windows fell in and all needed new regualtors and motors. Ask VW they''ll tell they''ve never heard of such a thing. Recently, I''ve had to replace the oxygen sensor $375.00 at only 35K. I am now dealing with my car not starting consistently and have had it in 3 times. VW says nothing is wrong after having to replace the fuel pump. I bought this car because I wanted a reliable car with good service and all I''ve gotten is the run around about excuses how all this is my fault because of the way I drive the car. It is amazing that all these people are having trouble with the Jetta and VW knows nothing about it. I recommend calling in a claim to customer service whenever something goes wrong.

Driving experience, looks, warranty, fit and finish, just all around a fantasic car that makes you look forward to driving it.

Weakness:

have to use premium gas and it uses a lot of it. I''ve notice a stitch in the drivers seat has come up. I''ll take it up with the dealer at oil change time. The air conditioning isn''t the coldest in the world but I''m really searching for stuff to say.

I still love this car. I bought it in the begining of Sept. The last 2002 1.8t in ontario at the time. I have silvere with black leather with the 17'' rims. Looks so, so good. Everytime I stop for gas people remark on what a nice car it is. Power in droves. the 2002 has 180hp as opposed to the previous year. You can totally feel it. 1st gear goes like a rocket. It''s almost too much. I find that I am getting poor gas milage in the city. I get about 450kms per tank. and it''s a 55 liter tank. Seems a little low to me. But maybe it''s because I''m givin''er too much. The leather is sweet too. I smile every morning I walk out and see this car in my parking space. Not that I''ve had many problems with the car, my biggest problem with VW was the warranty. Now it''s 4 years bumper to bumper there is no reason not to buy this car.

EVERYTHING

DO NOT BUY A JETTA! Before I purchased my Jetta in the summer of 1999, many people told me to stay away from VW, but I refused to listen. When I first got my car, I loved it. All the love I felt for my car soon turned into hate. Where to even begin... first, the sunroof broke, a minor problem compared to what lied ahead. Right around 25,000 miles some sensor went, which caused my car to randomly not start. The dealer didn''t seem to think this was a major problem, and made me wait a month to get it checked out. Of course, the warranty had expired by this time, so I had to fork out nearly $400 to fix this. Only a couple of months later, the check engine light came on again. Again, the car would not start after getting gas. I called three different dealers, and none of them would give me an appointment for earlier than a month wait. One dealer actually hung up on me, probably becuase he was tired of hearing similar complaints. I finally waited it out (mind you, the car would frequently not start after getting gas). I took it in, the fixed some valve to the tune of $250, but told me they couldn''t do anything about the car not starting at a gas station...as if I was making the problem up. There is a disgusting yellow waxy substance that comes out of all of the doors, and gets all over everything. They tell me this is no big deal. The most recent problem (aside from the car sometimes not starting) is the temperature light. It just randomly comes on and beeps forever. Also, the cloth stripping up near the drivers side door is now completely coming down. Although this car is not paid off, I cannot wait to get rid of it, and I urge anyone considering buying any VW product to reconsider. I didn''t want to listen to people before I bought my VW, and I should have. It would have saved me a lot of headaches. I am now in the process of trading it in and buying the new Altima. Any car would be better than a VW...

Service!!!!!! It is all about how they treat you after the purchase

I bought my Jetta on Aug 31, 2001 and so I have only had it for 2 months. It has been in the shop for 3 weeks. My ABS brake system is bad, so your thinking its all covered under the warrent right. Yes it is but the problem is there are no parts abvailable anywhere in the US. How absurd is that. Don''t get me wrong I love my car but come on 3 weeks and counting. Doesn''t say much about the company or the car. If anyone else has had a similar problem please let me know. tlodin@earthlink.net

Strength:

Exceptional handling (far superior to the newer Jetta models, which sacrificed handling for ride comfort). Adequate acceleration with 115 hp 2.0 engine. Great looks. Comfortable ride. Good storage.

Weakness:

Sure, repairing VWs is expensive, but there is a sure way to avoid the expense and hassles associated with VW dealers: don''t go there. Go to any of the hundreds of auto shops that repair German automobiles. They are reliable and they use parts that don''t have a "VW" on them but are just as safe and just as reliable.

Very reliable, fun to drive, good gas mileage, good looks. I''m consistently satisfied with my VW experiences. This Jetta replaced my 1986 GTI, which I''d still be driving had it not been totalled when I was rear-ended. I bought that car with 77,000 miles on it and drove it for 9 years. It had 160,000 miles on it when it was "retired", and I put an average of about $200 a YEAR into it in maintenance during its life with me. There is a lot of VW bashing on this web site, but people need to remember that cars are complicated mechanical/electonic pieces of machinery and they will break sometimes. Check the reviews on virtually any other car by any other maker and you''ll find similar horror stories. I suspect that the people who bad-mouth VW are the same people who bad-mouth their homebuilder when a window leaks, their computer maker when their system freezes, and their Levi''s when their jeans wear out in the knees. Some people just have a knack for complaining.

Weakness:

Soft suspension, weak radio reception

This car is awesome, and comes loaded with everything and then some. The only thing that I can complain about is the suspension is very soft, but that will be taken care of. I am not used to driving a car w/o a suspension upgrade. But for everyday driving, it is great. The only other prob is that the reception on the radio is very weak. Besides these issues, the car is excellent. I drive over 40k a year and I need a reliable, fun and econimical car. I used to have a 89, and loved it. This is my second and I think there will be more in the future. I love these cars. If I had more money I would buy a BMW, but until then, this is the best overall car for the money.
