Jetta Wagon GLS
Strength:
Sporty looks. Peppy pickup.
Weakness:
Ghostly tail lights. No inside door release to the tail door. No rear cup holder even though the manual shows one. Rear window washer fluid shoots over the roof. Windy sound like the windows are not sealed. I have 950 miles and already I am having trouble. The tail lights started coming on by themselves while the car is parked an unattented. Sometimes just for a minute, other times we would have to open all the doors or start and shut off the car. Finally, after a week of this, they came on and drained the battery so we had it towed to the dealership where it is now. Up till now though, I liked the feel of the car and felt it to be plenty peppy for a four cylinder. Similar Products Used: Saturn wagon |

Handling, this car corners like it is glued to the ground. I am still on the stock 14''s right now, i can''t wait to see the increase in handling with a drop in suspension and bigger tires.
Weakness:
2.0Liter engine, don''t get me wrong, the torque band is impressive but the factory exhaust and intakes are very restrictive and with simple modifications, the car is very fast. Fantastic Automobile!. Other than the fact that the 2.0 engine is only decently powerful straight from the factory, this car exhibits almost no weaknesses. Similar Products Used: Saab 9000 CDTurbo |

Jetta GT
Strength:
With the addition of a K@N filter, regular additions of fuel injection additives every 2000 mi and and routine oil changes the car is still running just like the day I bought it. But a little more engine growl and better hot weather performance with the filter. Also lots of awsome amounts of space for stuff. Coming back to school this year I packed everything I needed into it.
Weakness:
At 47,000 mi I started hearing a funny noise when I shifted into second gear. I cannot describe it, but it almost sounded as if I was not fully in gear. It persisted for a week and I called the dealership to make an appointment. When I brought it is I found that one of the gear was kinda stripped. Of course it was second, my fav gear to redline and dpwnshift into. But with no hassels, the VW guys gave me a whole new tranny with no fuss and free of charge for parts and labor. Thats a great warrenty eh, just 3 thousand miles more and I would be a broke college student now. Oh yea and the cd changer dies on me to 2 months after I bought it, but vw also had that fixed with a lousy FM modulator which I have now had taken out. I have now had the car for 2 years and all in all I must say that it was worth every penny. I bought it just after the original owners 2 year lease ran out and I must say that this is a very good way to go. When I bought the car the dealership left the pinkslip in the car that had all of the problems with car on it that the previous owner had to pay for. Everything that was on the list was corrected before it was sold to me. I even got a new pair of floormats out of them. For a college student on limited funds that needs a reliable car, there is no better way to go. Strength:
Basic motor system fine. Got me across country and back this summer with no problems. Feels safer and more solid than other cars in its size category (one of the main reasons I bought it).?
Weakness:
All other systems cheaply or poorly designed. Windows now broken for 4th time. Estimated cost to repair: $900. Awkardly-placed air conditioning filter: $400 to replace (I opted for stinky air instead). New headlight: $215. Bumper strips peeling off, trunk interior cracked, etc., etc.† DON"T GET FOOLED. The ads are quite enticing, as is the image you think you''ll be sporting, but spending all your spare time at the dealership will wear down your hip VW style pretty quickly. My mistake in not checking repair costs before purchase, but I guess I never figured a car that cost less than $20k would rank among the 10 most expensive cars to fix in 1999. Looks awesome, German car, fully loaded for under $23,000
Weakness:
???? I am looking at purchasing the new 2002 1.8T wagon. Does anyone have one or any other 2002 to comment on. I have been reading reviews and they are all over the place. How can you tell if the car was made in Mexico or Germany?? I really love the car and the price. I can get a fully loaded car with leather, sunroof, power everything, etc. for $22,000. I own a 99 Subaru Impreza RS and cant wait to get rid of it. Everything breaks on it. It seems like once one thing is fixed something else breaks. The window regulator for the passenger side is always broken, and the check engine light always comes on. Thats just to mention a few things. Anyways, if anyone has a 2002 jetta please let me know how it is. Thanks Similar Products Used: 1996 Nissan Pathfinder, 1993 Mazda mx-3, 1999 Subaru Impreza RS |

Everything! Ride, handling, power, and build quality.
Weakness:
Pricy little car. Goes for around 20 grand new. I am now 18 and my family has owned two VW''s. The first one was a 1995 Jetta GL with the 2.0-liter gas engine. The GL was a really nice car. A little under powered, but very well built. The next one we bought (now mine) is a 1997 Jetta TDI with the 1.9 liter turbo diesel. For the people who think diesels are just loud, smelly, and slow. Think again! The diesel is just as fast in top gear acceleration as the VR6, and gets 47 mpg while doing it. We haven''t had any real big problems, the only one that comes to mind is when the battery leaked and melted the windshield wiper fluid container. Oh yeah, and the ignition switch needs to be replaced after a couple of years($320). Other than that, the car has been a joy to drive. I''ve gone on a few road trips with my Jetta and it is a real road car. I can cruise between 80 and a 100mph with ease(I hardly ever go above 85, I''m not crazy). The faster you go, the more secure you feel. Steering response is quick and I have out handled and out accelerated a fair share of Civics, Accords and other socalled "competitors". As far as I am concerned, the Jetta is in a class all it''s own. It’s for the REAL driver. Pretty much everything. Seriously!
Weakness:
Not much. The cup holder could have been placed in a better spot. Hmm....can''t think of anything else right now. What a car!! If your considering buying a Jetta don''t let the negative reviews here dissuade you. The best thing to do is to test drive one. Then compare it to whatever your else your looking at. You''ll probably find that nothing compares to it. It''s German engineering at it''s best. Nothing in it''s price range drives quite like it. Also what normally is available as an option on most cars is STANDARD on the Jetta! So go ahead and go see for yourself. I''m sure you won''t be dissapointed. Air flow is great when you windows won''t roll up!
Weakness:
Rain, sleet, snow, cold air and heat tend to be a factor when your windows won''t roll up. PLEASE DON''T BUY A JETTA!!! It''s been a thoroughly frustrating experience. I have recently had to have BOTH front window regulators replaced... yet VW Customer Care "doesn''t admit there is a problem with the Jetta". Are you kidding me?! My dealer had 5 window regulator replacements THIS WEEK ALONE!!! From what I''ve seen the problems usually start after the warranty expires (imagine that!)... You have to contact VW Customer Care (800-822-8987) and ask them to review your case. They then take about 2 days to get back to the dealer to authorize repairs. Then the dealer has to squeeze the repairs in where they can due to the fact that they are swamped with other VWs with numerous problems. 3-5 days later, you might get your car back... BUT don''t expect VW to pay for the rental car. They say you''re lucky to have the window regulator replaced. They say they only do that "in good faith". HOW RIDICULOUS!!! Incredibly fast and looks cool, or at least it used to before the cracked windsheild and ugly paint.
Weakness:
I have had this car for five months and my tempature light continues to come on. But the worst thing of all is that now my paint is defective. There are ugly spots all over my car. They are all different sizes but the all look as if the paint bubbled and then cracked and now the paint is chipping off in little flakes. In some places you can even see the primer. I regret buying a Jetta and will never buy anything from Volkswagen again. I bought my Jetta used but itonly had 16,000 miles on it. Before I made this purchase I did my homework, or at least I thought. I am in college and was looking for a reliable car. I read all types of good reviews, some of them even called the Jetta a best buy. Obviously they did not drive it for long. I bought my Jetta in April 2001. I live 3 hours from the dealership where I bought the car and at least 1.5 hours from the closest VW dealer. My troubles began just one week after owning the car. First the emissions workshop light came on. I took the car to a dealer and they said there was some sort of bad connection and they fixed it under my warranty. Three days after having the car in the shop the emissions workshop light came on again. Also my passenger door would not unlock with the keyless entry. It would unlock and then go half way back down. I had to open the door from the inside to let passengers into my car. So I had to drive the car back to the dealer which was three hours away. This time the dealer said that the M/A meter was out so the replaced it under warranty. For the door lock, the said the door latch was broke so they replaced it but while doing repairs they discovered that the window reg. was broken so they replaced that as well. Everything was replaced under warranty so it did not cost anything but remember this was all within two weeks of purchasing the car. At first I thought this was all just really bad luck but then I began to notice the horrible grease that would run out the bottom of the doors. And then my pretty tan leather seat started to turn black. My friend said that it was from dark clothing rubbing against the seats. I tried everything to get it off but nothing works. But still I thought this was all just really bad luck on my part. Then one day I walked outside after work and my windshield was cracked. I could not figure out why, there were now chips or starlets in the windshield. I took the car to the dealer to have them check it out and they told me that it was not covered under warranty because something must have struck the windshield to have caused this. It did not matter that there were not chips visable to the naked eye because they told me that if you got out a microscope you would be able to see an indention. Next my tempature light came on. everything Don''t know where to begin. Let me start by saying the only saving grace is that my Jetta is paid for. My first problem: 1)the check engine light came on within the first year. 2)My sensor module went bad-400.00. 3)Three of my four windows do not work. I''m fed up with this car. Every extra penny goes into this thing. My be better off with a car payment...Honda or Toyota. Similar Products Used: Toyota |
