Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

Blistering performance. Tuneablility. Crash safety. Overall, a solid "Driver''s" car.

Weakness:

Some rattles(if you''ve ever driven a VW you''ll expect some of these). Some Doohickey''s, switches, etc. will probably breake in the years to come but that is a common fault in German engineered cars.

This car is great! Comfortable ride and BMW quality interior with very supportive sport seats. Great aftermarket performance available. There is huge tuning potential in the 1.8T engine. This car is VERY fast. With just a chip(400$CDN) I am up to 190-195hp and 230 ft/lbs. of torque. My car came with 150hp/155/lb ft. stock. 2002 model year Will have 180hp from the factory. My previous car was a V6 mustang and this car absolutely outperforms it in every department. I see a lot of people posting horror stories but I know quite a few who drive these cars and haven''t actually seen many problems other than the window regulator thing (windows going down and not coming up) which is supposed to be fixed for the current model year. This car can blow the doors off most of the cars in its price range including VTEC Hondas(Preludes, Civic SIR''s) and Toyota Celica''s. Keep in mind that those cars are 2 door coupes and this is a family sedan. Any BMW 3 series under 330 can''t keep up. This car is also very safe in an accident. I have seen many cases where people have walked away from ugly accidents without a scratch. Crumple zones and the 6 airbags definitely do their job! To see for yourself what this car is about check out the forums on www.vwvortex.com, 20vturbo.com or mygenerationiv.com.

I did a lot of research before buying this car, and had heard nothing but good things about it. I apparently made a huge mistake! I have only had my car for a little over a month, and was in a wreck a few days ago. I am suspecting that a malfucnction occurred (possibly in the cruise control) in the car, but VW says they won''t know until the car is fixed by the body shop. They state that no problems with cruise have been ever been reported, even though after the accident the cruise control can not be activated at all. They are blaming it on the accident. Sounds fishy to me, because of the way the accident happened. My right front wheel went of the road, I brought the car back up on the road, and the car took off on me, and I could not get the car under control, finally crashing on the other side into an embankment-Thank God no one got hurt. Has anyone else experienced such a malfunction. Please let me know - email me at sea_star01@hotmail.com.

Strength:

Quality and fuel economy.

Weakness:

Limited selection. Just not popular, not yet.

I have been driving the Jetta 1.9 TDI for about a year now. I have the diesel, for which I have not seen any reviews on this site for. What a shame that people in this country have not discovered what Europe has know about for years. Don''t be fooled by the 90 hp rating. This car has torque and acceleration you won''t believe, until you drive it. It''s not a speedy, racing, squeal tires off the line car, but maximum torque is reached at 1900 rpm''s. Most gas engines reach maximum torque at over 4,000 rpm''s. Top speed is 125 mph or so. Acceleration from 60 mph and up is better than all but high performance cars. And mileage, for the auto trans - 36-42. For the manual, 42 -48 mph. Less maintenance than a gas engine, far less electronics and ignition parts. A very high quality and practical car.

Strength:

I like the way it looks

Weakness:

Basically it is a piece of junk

I bought this car thinking that it would last and be great car if i took care of it and did regular maintenance. Was i ever wrong!!! I would say about the first year was great. After that my jetta has been nothing but trouble and lots of money. I have had my car in for engine trouble 2 times. Each time cost me almost $500.00 Just about a month ago i was driving down the road and the passenger window just fell inside the door. Cost me $125.00 to get the part to have it fixed. Then about 2 weeks ago i went out to get in my car and it wont start. Had to have it sent to the repair shop. The alternator is bad. Going to be another $400.00 to have it replaced. Plus in the process it killed the battery. Also i have been hearing a noise so i had them check it out. Well the cadilic converter is bad. Needs to be replaced. I have had to replace bad tail lights that burn out, My front head light just burned out also. I feel like this car is nothing but a piece of junk. I would never ever ever reccommend someone to buy a jetta. My car is a 1999 i should not be having all these problems and repair bills , then have to make a car payment. The list goes on and on with my problems. I can not wait until i can get rid of this car.

Strength:

Terrific torque, quiet, tight steering and handling, BMW-type feel for fewer bucks.

Weakness:

Stereo/ergonomics less intuitive, sited too low to keep eyes on the road.

Boy -- some of the reviews on this site are scary! So far, my 2002 1.8T Jetta 5speed has been superb. The seats are very supportive, including the middle and lower lumbar regions. No squeaks or rattles, fit and finish superb...better paint job than my previous Accord...great Monsoon stereo. The torque curve seems excellent, especially when I remember to give it a few revs before starting off the line. Premium gas is officially recommended, but Northtown''s service mgr claims he got a service bulletin that recommends 87 octane due to cold weather starting problems with 91. My car runs very well on regular -- no knocking or pinging. I can''t be sure if there''s reduced performance, since it''s damned zippy as it is. Ergonomics are not as good as in the Honda, especially for the low-height and less intuitive stereo, but interior switchgear lighting at night is far superior. Brakes are the best I''ve felt in any car I''ve owned, and my EX Accord had good ones. The ride is a bit firmer, but bumps are still muted, and noise levels seem excellent -- a tad less road roar than in the quiet Accord. Steering is direct and linear -- the car definitely has that BMW/German mechanical sense of solidity and responsiveness. The rear seat, of course, is more cramped than the Honda but seems adequate for mid-size adults. Seating is comfortable. If I don''t suffer some of the disasters listed by other on this site, I''ll count it as the most enjoyable car to drive I''ve had -- and I''m 54

Electrical Problem

I just purchased my Jetta Wolfsburg edition about a month ago and it has been in the shop twice. In the mornings or after it sets for a few hours when started the car rev''s to about 2500 to 3000 rpms then drops after about a minute or so. This went on for the first two weeks and then leaving work Of course it had to be a Friday, and the car engine light came on and I smelled burning electronic''s from the vents. Took it to the dealer and they said that they have replaced the Engine cooler sensor. Got it back yesterday and today it did the same Daaam thing. I am so upset, this car is brand new and has less than 1000 miles. Be ware of the Wolfsburg 1.8t. I have been hearing very bad things about it with all of my VW buddies. I was screwed. In the end the warranty can fix it however Do you want to own a new car that has been in the shop twice in the first month. PS. the rental car experience sucks.

EVERYTHING!! No joke, I can''t find a single fault in this car; unless brake dust is it''s fault! LOL

Weakness:

Nothing yet, and I hope there will be no problems in the future! :-)

Its time to finally post my review about my new Black 2002 VW Jetta GLX affectionately named: Angelica! Currently she has a little over 1100km. Yes that’s right, I am finally over the VW recommended break-in period, so I have been able to take her to the redline, thus I have been experimenting with how the car handles and feels under acceleration, it’s off the line power and response and how she feels on the highway/freeway. I must say; I AM GLAD I DIDN’T buy a 2001 BMW 330ci or a 2001 Prelude SE!! This car is everything I need, and more! I love it to death, so much that I have fallen into something of a “cleaning spell”; cleaning the car three times a week, if not more! When I purchased the car through Fifth Avenue Auto Haus here in Calgary, AB, Canada, I was AMAZED at how well “Mike Mitton”, my salesman, treated me. He found me one of the best prices I was able to find on my black beauty, and he did everything fast, and that’s how I like it! When I buy something, whether it be a computer, recreational machines (ATV’s or Jet ski’s), or a car: I do ALL the research myself; going to dealers many times over, finding out all the different prices, warranty information, and getting assurance that I am driving a safe vehicle. I studied the VW Jetta for over a year, and every time I looked at the car in person (at a dealership), I was amazed at rigged build quality and the INCREDIBLE value you get for your money! VW offers their customers killer customer service, great dealership locations, and good prices, and most of all; it’s a German car. I don’t care what people say; yes this car is made in Mexico; but it was German engineered, and is the only value German car BUILT FOR DRIVERS! I would take my Mexican built car any day over anything built here in Canada or the USA; including the Mercedes Benz ML320 or ML430. In the road of life, there are passengers, and there are drivers; DRIVER FOUND!

I could write a novel about the problems I''ve had with this car, but I''ll try to keep it short. 1. Burns about a quart of oil every 700 miles. 2. Engine knocks when accelerating. 3. Annoying interior rattles and squeaks throughout the dash. 4. Idles roughly after engine warms up. 5. Factory alarm goes off when I unlock the doors, and sometimes goes off when I''m driving the car. After a couple minutes it shuts the car down, leaving me stranded. 6. ABS light is always on. 7. Door moulding falls off. 8. Malfunctioning remote trunk release button. 9. Water leaks into trunk and back seat floor filling up spare tire well and mildewing carpet. 10. Loud buzzing/rattling sound under the car when the engine is between two and three thousand RPM. 11. The rear power door locks stick and will only lock/unlock manually. 12. Front window seal is falling out. 13. Power sunroof broke and came out of the rails the second time I tried to open it. Now for some reason it intermittently pops up and down on it''s own. 14. Shifter is loose and makes chunking/rattling sounds. 15. Had to replace the break pads and rotors twice, and the break master cylinder once in the last three years. 16. Pushed the ci

My experience with this car has been a complete nightmare. The car felt pretty good and didn''t have any problems when I test drove it, so I thought I''d give Volkswagen a try. This has become the most expensive mistake I''ve ever made in my life! I wish I had access to the Internet before I bought this car, go read just about any VW forum and you''ll find out what these cars are about. When visiting a few Volkswagen forums to discuss some of the more serious problems with the car (oil burning and engine knocking) to hopefully get some insight on what''s wrong, everyone replied saying they all had the same problems, and no one seemed to think it was unusual. Every VW forum I go to there is hundreds of complaints about oil consumption, even on brand new Volkswagens. How is VW getting away with this, why isn''t there a recall? Even my VW mechanic says that burning oil is completely "normal" for a VW, and I''m just going to have to live with it. Refilling the engine with oil every 500 miles isn''t really a big deal to me. The real problem is when the burning oil causes $100 O2 sensors, $20 spark plugs, and $400 catalytic converters to foul and need replacement every year. My son''s Civic has over twice the miles my Volkswagen has and it has never burned a drop of oil. Like other people on here have pointed out - almost all the good reviews are from people with brand new Jettas that have yet to experience problems, after a few years I''m sure most of them will change their opinion of Volkswagen. Thinking about the amount of money I stand to lose after getting rid of this car makes me sick to death. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CHANCES WITH A VW! If your looking for a good, reliable car in the same price range as the Jetta, the Honda Civic and Accord are unsurpassed.

Electrical, rattles, trim, bad sensors, weak oil pan and the worst warranty in the automotive world, don''t be tricked by the free service its only worth like 300.00

Like many other reviews here I share the sentiment that it is a great car, until the end of the honeymoon...Car occasionally won''t start, everytime I start it the dash looks like a X-mas tree with all the warning lights, ie. emmissions workshop, check engine, low coolant and this annoying STOP-STOP light in the trip computer (bad coolant sensor), cup holders are busted, the worst unidentifiable rattles in the dash, I could go on, luckily (knock wood) I have never been left stranded (except when the oil pan busted from road debris, should not have happened) Love it at first, can''t wait to get rid of it now
