Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Fast, furious and beauty, what more can you ask for? Not to mention reliable, quiet and did I say FAST?

Weakness:

Parking it for the night and losing sleep just thinking about the s-curves that you are missing.......jk

The 1.8t Jetta is a solid and very reliable car. My friend has a 2000 Honda EX and he has 160 hp stock VTEC. I raced him and blew his doors off.........BAD!!!! No contest. And the get thing is that with about $1,200-1,700 you can upgrade to safely handle 200-215hp and really put the hurt on someone. I recommend this car to any looking to have fun while they drive. VW has over-done themselves on this one.

Volkswagen Motor Problems?

Dear Sir or Madame: I am interested in anyone having knowledge about a possible problem with the 1.8 liter engines on recent Volkswagen cars. I have information that they are burning a tremendous about of oil. This could be a potentially disastrous problem. Please advise at the address provided below. Please also contact Mr. Gerd Klauss of Volkswagen North America. window regulator - locks - keys

I am so disappointed with my VW Jetta. I leased a new car so that I would not have to pay for repairs. Boy I was wrong- After only two years my rear door lock will not work unless I manually push it down - the service department told me that I have to pay $260 to repair the lock. Then my window fell inside my door which they informed me would be almost $400! I have never had a single problem with Hondas that were 10 years older and I am so angry about my Jetta! I will never buy another Jetta again

Appearance--it''s the cutest car!

Weakness:

If things like power windows and air-conditioning are going out at 30,000 miles then what''s going to happen when I''m at 100,000 miles?!!!!

So, disappointed--the minute my car went off warranty, it started falling apart. At 1 1/2 years old my jetta that i adore had to have a motor replaced in the driver''s side window. Then, 9 mos. later all my other windows stopped working. I had to pay to have wiring fixed in one window, and the regulators in the right front and rear windows replaced. The dealer said this was unusual. Then 2 mos. later, my air conditioning stopped working. I took it in and paid $250 to have the expansion valve replaced. Again, the dealer said it was unusual. Two weeks later, after getting home from a vacation, the air conditioning was not working again. I took it back in. This time the Evaporator Core is leaking or something and all I know is that it''s going to cost $850 to replace and this is on top of the $250 I spent two weeks earlier. Incidentally, I have met two other people who own volkswagons who are having similar problems with their windows. My time is precious to me and so is the money that I work hard to earn--My next car will be a Honda!

Looks are seductive. Bells and whistles give the illusion of value for the money. Oh, am I supposed to talk about how cool the key is? Give me a break!

Weakness:

Volkswagen service has got to be the worst in the world and KNOW THIS NOW Volkswagen Customer Care will never--and I mean NEVER--give a flip about any of you. This car sucks unlike any car hath sucked before. Remember the Ford Pinto? That was a MUCH better car! To call a Volkswagen an "automobile" is an insult to automobile manufacturers the world over. If you own a Volkswagen--even if you are presently happy with it--I feel sorry for you. You are an unsuspecting and unwilling victim, you just may not know it yet. Volkswagen, you are criminal and should be prosecuted for theft. Shame on you.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT MOST OF THE PEOPLE GIVING GOOD REVIEWS CONCERNING THEIR VOLKSWAGENS HAVE HAD THEIR VEHICLE LESS THAN 1 YEAR!!! I,d like to talk to them a year from now and see if they feel the same way! This car has made me a laughing stock! I am so grateful that the rest of my family decided not to purchase a VW. Please do not think that I am some kind of exception or that I've just had bad luck; that could be a costly mistake for you and your family. Even with good research and the best of intentions we can still fall prey to hype. "5-speeds, Monsoon sound systems and BBS wheels" do not a good car make. In fact, any car can have these things. Make no mistake, the jetta is a nicely-dresseed automobile (I use the term loosely). All the more reason to be cautious. I have been told in the past that "you get what you pay for" and Volkswagen has single-handedly convinced me of this. YOU WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY fall in love with the Jetta once you sit in it and drive it. It smacks of Mercedes Benz and all things German in automobiles--but beware--this is no German car. I realize that there will be those readers that are already biased in favor of the idea of purchasing a Jetta for whatever reasons. If you are young and think the car looks "cool," or you like blue and red lights on the dash or the look of wood grain gives you a sense of luxury for the money, by all means, go ahead: Just don't come crying when the thing begins to fall apart--And it will!!
I purchased my 2000 Volkswagen P.O.S. in December, 1999. The vehicle has 30,000 miles on it with the folling repairs;
Passenger doorlock actuator replaced
Driver's doorlock actuator replaced
Monsoon head unit replaced
Door speaker replaced
Steering wheel realligned
Windshield replaced (due to natural body flex of the car!)
Fuel door repaired
Clear-coat peeling from wheels
Front-end noise (never fixed)
Air conditioner repaired
A/C compressor screeches til engine warms (not fixed)
Steering wheel locks-up when trying to turn it to the left
for a lane change (this item has made for some close
calls!) Since the car doesn't do it everytime my friendly
neighborhood service department claims it's my imagination.
Drive shaft, CV joints and boots replaced
Torque converter rebuilt including pump and flex plate
Torque converter rebuilt AGAIN including pump and flex plate
VR6 engine-complete-replaced
Sure, the car still looks great as far as I remember (it's in the shop again), and, yes, everything was covered by warranty (except a rental this last time), however it should be noted that in the year and a half that I have owned this horror I have been without it for a total of 4 months. I actually PAID for a car I was unable to use for 4 months. I must also say that I am continuing to pay a lot of money for a car I do not feel safe in. The idea of attempting even a small roadtrip in this car fills me with dread. The day--and I mean the very day--that this car is "repaired" again I am trading out of it for ANYTHING!!! I am begging you; if you care at all about the safety of your family, if you care at all about your health or your finances or your future PLEASE DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER BRINGING HOME A VOLKSWAGEN--EVER!!! You have been amply warned. The ball is in your court.

Quality, Customer Care

I find it very unfortunate for new car buyers that many of the Jetta owners on this site raving about their vehicles have not owned the vehicle a sufficient amount of time to give a honest review. Many seem to be posting a review shortly after purchase when they are still in love with their car.

To those shopping for a small compact, stay away from Volkswagons. These are highly problematic vehicles. At a glance and after a test drive, they may give the impression of an affordable luxury vehicle. Looks can be deceiving. Everything....please do not underestimate this, everything breaks.

I based a lot of my purchase on reading magazine reviews which declared the Jetta a "Best Buy" and the reputation for quality. After a year with the vehicle, I had collected a stack of repair invoices from the engine, radio, windows, sun roof, battery, alarm.... Many of these were "repaired" repeatedly. When getting my car towed to the dealership various times, I was constantly reminded by the tow drivers of how many Jettas they had towed for similiar problems (And there were many).

And as pretty as the vehicle looked initially, it did not last. The doors continually leak a "lubricant", the paint scratches easily, and the cloth interior is a lint magnet.

I urge all potential buyers that you can not be careful in buying one of these cars, but that they must be avoided.

Dealer?

We are going to purchase a used 2000 Jetta .
I read all these very bad and very good reviews and think that
VW should not produce in Mexico. There seems to be a quality control
issue. Otherwise, I can't explain this big gap in good and bad experience.
When you look up reviews in Europe, you'll find a much more common sense
about the quality of a Jetta.
It's really unfortunate, that almost everyone complained about VW dealers.
This is a issue, Volkswagen should take more serious!!

Strength:

Handling, ride, comfort, roominess, large trunk, price. A real driver's car for a pittance! This is no Toyota.

Weakness:

Dealer service, build quality, many substandard small parts. This is no Toyota.

A solid, roomy driver's car. Great seats, comfortable road car (except for noise level, what do you expect for $13K?). However, the experience has been badly marred by many problems big and small. Could not put fuel in the gas tank when it was new, took 2 dealer visits to fix. 5-speed tranny cracked a synchro at 23K mi, took 18 mo, 18K mi to convince dealer of problem, took them 4 tries to fix it, then they returned the car running poorly due to a vacuum leak. In 61K miles, have replaced 4 sets of sun visors, half the exterior door trim, the floor mats (in Florida!), the transmission (after multiple failed rebuilds), throttle body, both O2 sensors, several vacuum and breather hoses. The engine surges and stumbles badly if you try to accelerate after a couple of hours of interstate cruising.

EVERYTHING

This is a update on the biggest pile of crap you can buy. I left a zero star review already, but thought i'de make a record of our latest problem. Drove off today and car wouldn't shift out of third gear (auto trans). No matter what it wouldn't shift into fourth. I looked down thinking that it wasn't in "D" and maybe in a lower gear. But no it was in drive, I hit the brakes hit the gas no matter what we would do it wouldn't shift. It finnally slipped into gear, and I mean slipped. So i'de have to say the trans is about on it's way to a special little place in hell for all volkswagens. We are also going thru another air flow meter. DO NOT BUY A VOLKSWAGEN!!!!! IF YOU ARE STUPID ENOUGH TO BUY ONE AFTER ALL OF THESE REVIEWS THEN YOU DESERVE IT!!!!!
