Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

Nice handling and power. Good stereo. Looks great.

Weakness:

Where to begin? LOTS of electrical problems, windows leak big time on rainy days, big globs of grease running down my doors, dash lights around climate control disappeared, I put way too much oil in the car (told this is normal?), lots of rattles, I was ready to put my fist through the plastic over the speedometer, now my arm rest rattles constantly (it fell apart and I left it like that because it's quieter. My doors locks go up and down on their own, as do the windows, and the alarm goes off for no reason.

This is the first brand new car I ever bought, and what a disappointment. I loved it at first, the handling, power and ride, but now I think I must have ordered the optional "poltergeist" accessory. My doors lock and unlock by themselves, the windows go up when you push down and vice versa, my dash lights come and go as they please. I tried to sell it privately but could not even lie to unsuspecting people. I finally traded it in. If you just bought a new one and love it, enjoy it now, because there are only bumps in the road ahead.

Strength:

Handling
Acceleration
Braking
Awesome tranny! (5 spd)
Ergonomics
Engineering beauty

Weakness:

None so far. Others have complained about window regulators breaking.

This car is a blast to drive! If you test drive one, you will probably buy it. I purchased a Wolfsburg edition with the 1.8L turbo in it. To paraphrase Tom and Ray "even Mahatma Ghandi would speed in this thing". So you have been warned!

But the key here is that the rest of the car is up to the engine. Handling is incredible - the car feels like it is glued to the road. Nice ride - firm, but you don't feel every tar patch. The transmission is also a wonder. I did not think shifting like this was possible in a FWD car. Positive shifter, short throws, very good tactile feedback. I could go on and on about this car. Suffice it to say that I have NEVER been this excited about a vehicle. I am normally a very pragmatic person, but this car has changed that.

Similar Products Used:

Honda EX - no comparison. The Jetta will outperform and outhandle this car any day of the week. The honda also looks (and feels) like it is made out of aluminum foil.
Altima SE - Nice, but the engine, transmission and suspension don't measure up to the Jetta. I also own an older Altima - it has been very reliable and cheap to own.

Strength:

- quiet ride
- nice *looking* body style
- nice *looking* interior

Weakness:

where should I begin (oh my god!):
- this car DRINKS OIL! almost 1 quart per 4000 miles: guess what? this is "normal" according to volkswagon. (give me a break folks, i've NEVER owned a vehicle that drinks oil like this).
- yellow greasy goo drips from the doors: guess what: "normal" according to volkswagon
- power windows break: unexpectedly fall down into the doors. crapy "window regulators" ..and costly to fix: >$200. You don't want this to happen to you on a rainy or snowy day!
- engine (2.0L 4 cyl) is VERY WEAK: almost dangeriously weak on take off. Way too week for the cars weight. no power whatsoever.
- litte things on the interior break
- break lights are ALWAYS blowing out (this is an electrical issue)
- fuses for power plugs blow out regularly (another electrical issue).
- Volkswagon and dealer customer no-service TOTALLY BLOWS: they will waste your time and treat you like an idiot! (i.e. "normal for the car to drink oil the way it does"). Especially if your a woman ...really.

This car is an ungodly piece of doo doo.

My wife will NEVER EVER EVER buy a volkswagon again. She will NEVER RECOMMEND a VW.

I am a VW fan myself, and this car has let me down and made me look like an idiot ..not to mention the horrible service we got from volkswagon.

Strength:

I am so blinded by the pain I have been in, it's hard to see any positive things about the car at all. The key is cool, I guess.

Weakness:

VW Customer Service stinks. With everything going wrong that's covered under warranty, you think they wouldn't hesitate to provide a loaner car. Yeah, right. And how about the fact that they sell cars that don't run properly? That's a definite weakness. I have bought several new and nearly new cars and this is the first time in my life I have ever had such a major problem with one in the first six months of ownership.

In January 2001, I leased a brand new Volkswagen Jetta from North Penn Volkswagen in Colmar, Pennsylvania. During the sale, my sales representative, Robert Peeples, assured me that I would be thrilled with the quality of the car, and that if anything went wrong with the car, it would be immediately addressed and, if it were something covered under warranty, I would be issued a loaner car until the problem was completely resolved.
A few weeks later, I began to hear a high-pitched squealing every time I pressed or released the brake pedal. Alarmed, I immediately called North Penn VW and was told that it was because the car was new and that the problem would go away on its own. Shortly thereafter, I began having severe pain in my lower back. The pain grew so severe, I asked for a referral from my doctor to a chiropractor, who said I needed several months of treatment to correct the problem. Two months later, I was still having lower back pain, now so severe, sitting for any length of time, with or without support, caused me to be in excruciating pain. I purchased a magnetic car seat and bracelet in an attempt to find some relief from the pain. Nothing helped.

Upon contacting a mechanic, I was told that as soon as the squeaking began, the brake booster stopped functioning. Because of this, for the past six months, I have been applying close to 50 pounds of pressure in order to get my brakes to function, as opposed to the regular 12 pounds of pressure functioning brakes require to stop properly. My mechanic could only estimate the damage this would do to my lower back. My chiropractor, however, was able to confirm that the constant strain on the lower back and leg caused by needing to apply the additional pressure would surely manifest in the form of severe lower back pain, as has happened in my case. The tension resulting from hearing the incessant squealing of the brakes while driving could only serve to exacerbate this pain.

To summarize:

1) When I originally contacted VW about the problem they said it would go away, DESPITE the fact that this is a known VW issue, judging by the fact that the part (brakes booster for 2001 Jetta) is backordered, suggesting that this is not a one-time problem.
2) When I finally brought the car in of my own accord and got VW to identify the problem, I was not issued a loaner car and was treated with extremely poor customer service, at best.
3) As a result of the defect, due to the stress of enduring the constant high-pitched squeal of the brakes and the additional 35 pounds of pressure I’ve had to apply to the brakes for the past six months, I have developed severe lower back problems that have caused me to require extensive chiropractic treatment, physical therapy, and magnetic therapy.

When I bought my Jetta, I was told that I would “drive happy.” Instead, I was sold a faulty car, received poor customer service and have suffered severe physical pain for the past six months as a result. I have not been “driving happy.” I have been driving while in excruciating pain. At this point I just want a car that is more compatible with my anatomy, or at the very least, doesn’t cause me severe pain. That is NOT the VW Jetta. Of that I am sure.

VW Jetta...that is it, the name. Great advertising. NICE TRY with the young and hip thing gents. This topic was over before I touched the keypad.

Weakness:

HERE WE GO, Service was absolutely insane from VW and VANEE MOTORS in Lethbridge,AB Canada. The car was a lemon from the beginning, IHAD FOUR NEW FLY WHEEL AND STARTER KITS PUT IN, within a 9 month period. I realize all of the good reviews in this site are under 1yr. owners...give it time right now you are driving the image. Several other things have broken on the lemon, door handles etc. Too many rickety assemblage problems to report. GERMAN ENGINEERING????? I do believe they have been cheeply made in Mexico, near sweatshop conditions, since about 93. Which makes me wonder why the parts are still overpriced. I hate to risk sounding like I am senslessley bashing this company, infact I am only trying to help others.

I was also once hung up on the "coolness" of the VW product. Please look into this real hard and the truth will be revealed, hindsight is always 20/20. I hear alot of dealership complaints across CAN. and the States. It was confirmed with Vanee Motors in Lethbridge AB. I have never and will never again deal with these Gold chain, unbuttoned shirt, could not sell a lemonaid as good as my nephew salesmen. I hate sounding so unproffessional...but ya give what you get. Word to the wise, say no to VW and Vanee motors.

All i can realy say is that it is a great car and if you are looking for something fun and fast and you have to get it in 5 speed then go for the jetta wolfsberg. Have a great time driving it.

Model Reviewed: Jetta GLX

Strength:

*Styling
*Features for it's class - Value
*Driveability

Weakness:

*Price - expensive little suckers - $25K for a VW?
*Brake squeak issues for all VR6 models - Lack of dealer and Manufacturer support. - :(
*Lack of back seat - I didn't know VW made a 4 door 2 seater - My 1998 GLX looks like a limo next to this thing :(

The current body style is by far the best effort VW has put forth in a long time. I've owned everybody style since the original and it's incredible. I also own a 1998 GLX and have not been nearly impressed as I am with the current model GLX. The new car's advances so much more by way of performance (handling) and features (memory power seats, auto climate control, rain sensing wipers, auto dimming mirrors) than the previous model ever had dreamed of. It's like Dr. F. Piech (CEO of VW) waged war with BMW and decided to fight BMW with BMW's.

With all great praise comes critisim. The car has 16K on it, and like my 1998 GLX has developed an irritating squeak. With the 1998 I've returned to the dealership countless times and still it squeaks. (I've recently traded the car for a non-VW brand) I'm very dissapointed that it's made it's way to the new models.

The problem is (for all you nice folks who have a VR6 models) a high pitch squeak that is heard while driving over bumpy roads (NOT WHILE BRAKING!). It's more detectable with the sunroof open and windows down. The problem is with the brake clips. It seems as the cars brake pads wear down the brake clips cannot hold the pad against the caliper effectively thereby causing the pads to clap against the side of the caliper causing this annoying squeaking sound. If you hold the brake pedal down while going over a bump you won't hear the noise because you're apply pressure to the pad against the rotor eliminating the 'slack' . I find it disgusting that a brand new car would make such a sound - never mind an expensive little car aimed at the likes of BMW! (At last check I didn't hear this sound on a 323!)

With that said, What's more annoying than the sound is the lack of dealer support behind the problem. The mechanics know about the problem, but currently there's no fix! And if you're thinking about getting one of these models ask the sales staff about the problem - they don't know about it . If you're experiencing the same problem as I describe please e-mail me I'd love to discuss this further!
