Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Model Reviewed: GLS 1.8T

Strength:

Magnificent acceleration,(especially when govenor is tweaked by Neuspeed). Absolutely the drivers car! Corners better than the batmobile, and switches are ergonomically perfect. Looks like pure European beauty from inside and out, along with the most beautiful instrument lighting that I have ever seen. Sound quality that beats a 2k stereo

Weakness:

American Govenor steals from the cars true ability, however that can be fixed, other than that the car is to perfect to complain about.

This car has everything a driver could want, and if gas prices would agree with me and I would drive just for leasure, however the premium gasoline that the car requires (and well deserves) makes that a challenge. I shopped for weeks and no other dealer could even make me consider buying after driving the 1.8T, overall the car had more bang for the buck! The luxury, look, and just sheer German power that the Jetta posseses makes it #1 in my overall car review! Now if you like the normal car look and cannot appreciate paying slightly over 20k for a car that compares to BMW's then go ahead and buy a little Civic

Similar Products Used:

I would not even dream of comparing it with anything under high priced sedans such as Maxima's or entry level BMW's. It is SIN to compare with cars such as Civic or Integra..the car simply blows them away!

Model Reviewed: Jetta GLX (VR6)

Strength:

This car has yet to be topped by anything under $40,000. The real wood and leather interior are second to none, the engine is powerful, smooth ride, absolutely no road noise. I love this car. If you are in the $25000 range for a car, this is a must!

Weakness:

Nothing so far.

I would reccomend the Jetta for anyone who can afford it. If you have refined tastes in cars, don't settle for anything but the GLX. I love mine, and I am a huge automotive enthusiast. I test it to the limits and it responds with a smile. If you are just lookin for a point A to point B car, go for the GL. It's substantially less and still has the european quality design. E-mail me with questions, I'll be happy to answer.

Strength:

The price and also the quality. It handles nice and has a good fit and finish...

Weakness:

It is slow....Some of the parts are plastic and have broken.

I love my Jetta. I currently have 128,000 miles on it and am very satisfied. I owned a VW Fox prior to this and a 1969 VW bus when I was in college. The Jetta and Fox are both great cars. I have a stick shift which I feel contributes to the overall power and also longevity of the car. It handles fine but is not a real barn burner. The stick helps with that also. I plan on driving this car to the moon....230,000 miles. I have put in new brakes, two sets of tires, and assorted other parts. It is a solid little car. I was also in a serious accident and the car held up fine.

Strength:

Cool Car-- Not much else said, I spent time looking at which jetta to buy the 1.8t or the bigger engine VR6. I test drove both and the 1.8 was quicker in every way even though the number do say so. Everything is perfect in this car. interior lights are splendid. Manual transmission is smooth if you know how to use it. 1.8t engine is amazing lots of power torque, gas mileage, even souds good the VR6 sounds like a mild flem cough. conviniant cup holders will hold over the roughest roads. Trunk is huge for a small car you could fit two people in there(have not tried, Yet) Handles great with the Sports package 17" weels hug the road
How could a forget it looks GREAT!!!

Weakness:

Not many, only if you are anal about your toys to you see faults with this car. First its not possible to have the interior lights on without outside lights on. Second, the trunk does not lift up by itself (pain in the butt if you have a big load in your arms) Third, no room for passengers in the back, for a four door car it should be a little more roomy in the back, The front seats don't go down as mush as I would like(pet pieve) In cold climates takes a while to warm up.

Love the car so far its perfect for me. One thing the bothers me os that every one has it but whatever must be good than. Its also a yup (young urban profesional) car but the girls love the rich dudes. If you have 20 grand to spend, buy it, there is no other car that fits the money spent. If you do buy, buy 1.8T. The bigger engine does nothing except for top speed but how many time are you crusing a 135 mph (like never) 1.8T cheaper better proformance only problem is that it's only available in manual. They have 1.9 liter Auto but no turbo charger (way under powered) The only plus to getting the VR6 is more features in the inside like the climate control (works great) But the engine was more important to me. If you are thinking about buying it go to VW.com great web site to play with. For what you are paying it is totaly worth it, more money by passat to BMW but that is getting in a different league. The car is great, wonderful, love it. After you buy it you WILL understand!!!!!!! :)

Strength:

The car is off the hook! Fun to drive and fast. I The features are unsurpassable by anything but a BMW. The features are great I love the power seats and their surfaces. Love the seat memory and Steering wheel adjustments for audio are great, cruise control also. Smooth as silk! It feels like a BMW only alot less. Is faster than many sports cars. The best car for under 30 grand in my opinion. I wouldnt buy anything else.
I almost forgot the Rain sensor! Isnt that the coolest thing! Great feature keeps you from constantly change wiper speeds.

Weakness:

It is a bit choppy when cold but when warm watch out! The dealer marked up the car $3900 dollars because they are "popular". If you noticed I did not pay that! I asked him how many people do pay that hideous adjustment and he told me "around 60% of the people pay it" I shook my head and laughed. The handles a little loose at speeds excessing 100 mph (I know most people dont take there's there but its a car so drive it!) There is really no weaknesses besides the suspension being a bit soft.

This is my 3rd Jetta and this is my favorite and most fun to drive. I thought my last one was until I got this one. I have only had it for about a month but love it. The was pricey but you get what you pay for. It is totally worth it to spend the extra money. The Vr6 is like a whole other car. Doesnt feel like any of the other Jettas. I am happy with VW and love there products! Driver Found!!!!!!

Strength:

Have not had the car that long but love the way it drives and feels. Dash looks great! The entire car feels good. Monsoon sound system is fantastic, the car blows away everything in it's class. The added features you get with the W.B. make it a great car for the money.

Weakness:

I'm sure that with time I will find that this car, like all others, has things wrong with it. But as of right now it's a great car for the money.

I have read most of these reviews and they complain about, "no room in the back seat"(that souldn't be a surprise...sit it the back seat before you buy a $20,000 car), "bad cup holders" (so stop trying to slam your favorite beer mug in there! Take a can of soda or get a drink holder from your favorite fast food place), "to much roll in the body" (what do you expect? It's a freekn sedan not an indy car). You know there are things in every car that you would like to change, things that YOU would have done different, well unless you are a car designer you don't have that luxury. I'm not trying to tell anyone that the Jetta is the perfect car, but when you can buy a car for around $20,000 with all of the fetures that you get with the Jetta it's a pretty great deal. Good luck to all of you trying to find the perfect car, but if your willing to settle for a great deal on a well made car, check out the new Jetta.

Strength:

Very spacious with the interior and trunk.

Weakness:

Engine and other major parts of the car was poorly built. I have heard MANY MANY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION problems with Jetta's around the same year as mine.

M Y J E T T A H O R R O R S T O R Y

I love VW cars. I've owned the Rabbit, the Golf, the GTI, and now this Jetta. My two years were fine... until I reached 90k... my transmission failed. It's an automatic. I paid $16,000 CAD when it was only two years old, and I fell in love. I don't race with my car, I take care of it very well. I pump the best quality gas everytime. I hardly go long driving. Please read on to my horror story....

When I brought it in to get checked, I heard the worst news. The body valve in my transmission failed, among other things in my transmission. It cost me $4000CAD out of my wallet to replace the damn thing. It was fine until 7 months later, I found myself back to replace it again. Thank God for warranty, but what are the chances of returning back because it failed again. A year after the 7 months, the transmission was leaking badly, I had to get it checked again.

After my transmission failed, my car died in the middle of the street. I was literally crying when they towed it away. The mechanics at VW that worked on my car didn't know what was wrong. It took days and alot of trial and error tests to figure it out. I had many many parts replaced. I ended up spending $2000CAD in total. The result, the COIL failed at an early stage. The COIL that distributed power to the engine.

Next horror story, the muffler deteriorated. Since Jetta's have two mufflers, I had to replace them both. It cost me $680 CAD. The mechanic that worked on my muffler said that this is a common thing for VW's.

The outside molding on the front passenger door keeps falling off. I've had it fixed about 4 times now.

The glove compartment handle keeps breaking. It broke twice in a year and a half.

Interior lights burn really fast.

And finally the last of my Jetta horror stories... I brought to VW cause I was experiencing some rattling under the hood. The rattling noise is unknown. It's coming from under the engine block and to get to the noise, they have to remove a metal shielding which may take two hours to disassemble !! They made some assumptions and if they are right, they said, "You better contact your bank cause you'll need a big loan for this fix." They're really nice mechanics at VW, they were being funny. My face just dropped when I heard that it was going to cost alot.

I've owned this car for four years. And this is what I'm going through. After the lastest news, I decided to leave it and get a new car. I am no longer a VW owner.

Model Reviewed: Jetta wolfsburg edition

Strength:

1.8t engine-this engine loves to run, it is hard to keep off the accelerator.
BBS rims and high performance tires.
Sport suspension.
So many standard features, that I can't list them all.

Weakness:

CD player as a very expensive option.
No cup holders in the back.
flimsy cup holder in the front.

I have been looking for a good commuter car for myself that has a balance between economy and power. There is no other car(within my price range) that compares to the Jetta(w/1.8t engine.) I have only owned it at week, but so far, I am very impressed. I researched a new vehicle for about a year. My first car purchase was a huge mistake, and I wanted to make sure that I didn't repeat that. The Wolfsburg Edition has no match for the options you get with the money you spend.

Model Reviewed: Jetta GLS

Strength:

It handles so nice, it looks cool, and its big and roomy.

Weakness:

The engineer who thought he could make power door locks out of a vacuum pump and aquarium hose was dumber than a sack full of hammers. I believe the windows are an evil plot by VW, who get kick-backs from the dealers who charge $75 an hour to fix them again, and again, and again. The wiring in 3 doors (so far) has gone bad and had to be replaced. But wait, there's good news! It only took the dealer three tries to get the right wires. But they have a very pretty showroom, with tile floors in the shop, and preppy little service representatives in polo shirts. They don't actually do any work, they just tell you how long to wait. Our dealer has two locations, but VW won't let them talk to each other, or share record files on my car. 16 months of this is enough - I want out. I will not throw good money after bad.

The most pleasurable car I ever drove, the most disappointing car I ever owned. I dream about how it handles. I have nightmares about its electrical system.

There is no excuse in this day and age for the problems this car has. And they are only going to get worse. I would trade it for my 1972 VW squareback in a second.

Similar Products Used:

I would give anything to have my 1988 tercel that I traded for it back instead. All it needed was a new clutch (the first one lasted 140K). Or how about another Subaru wagon? The 3 I've had didn't break down either. My 1976 Vega was more dependable. Only the Ford Tortoise was as disappointing.

Lots of power, very comfortable front seats, great stereo system. Color is beautiful (silver).

Weakness:

Black interior seats suck. Lint, dust, hair, anything & everything sticks to cloth seats. Very unhappy since vacuum doesn't remove. Spend many hours with lint brush removing lint, etc. The back seat is not very roomy.

I am very pleased with the physical characteristics of the car. It has great performance and handles very well.
