Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

Good looks - but i'm married now (shoot!)
Decent fit and finish
Decent performance for the 2.0l engine

Weakness:

Too much body lean in corners and in aggressive driving.
Long shifter throws which can get a bit getting used to.
Too short 5th gear. Feels like you are going to blow the engine going above 70mph/120kph.
Our local dealer service is fair to poor and phone followups by 3rd party cust serve companies failed to remedy situation.

22k CAN before taxes. 26k after. Damn Canadian taxes!
Included upgrade alloy wheels as well. Love this car but wished I would have waited another 6-12 mos for the new 1.8T engine putting out 150 hp. That would have been sweet. The more and more I drive this car I realize that there was no real option other than this Jetta. Beautiful.

Excellent looks, performance, handling. I have had no problems with this car.

Weakness:

The cloth seats pick up too much fuzz. It's cleanable, but you really have to work at it. Get the leather.

Strength:

The handling is awesome in this thing. The stearing nice and tight. Easy clutch to use. Suspension is solid but not so stiff as to make long rides unbearable. Front seats are very comfortable. Huge trunk that holds all my street hockey equipment and four other's.

Weakness:

Stick has some play to it but not nearly as bad as some BMW's I've driven. No cup holders up front. You have no idea how many drinks I've spilt! Plastic body trim is a joke (Best thing that ever happened to the Jetta was the type III body style. No plastic trim!). High speed acceleration nearing non-existant. Rear seats do not fold down.

This car is my absolute favorite car to drive. Especially on a curvy road. Only complaints with this car are ones that are not manufacturing faults, except for that damned plastic trim. The person who put in the CD player needs to be shot since he sliced through the right turn signal wire with one of the screws. The previous owner cross-threaded one of the spark plugs, and he defiled this car by smoking in it! Anyway, for the $3000 I payed for this car it is one of the best deals I ran across. Hey, I can out run Acura Integras on winding roads! This car is perfect for those looking for something with performance but not the high sticker price.

A next genearation car, that reflects beauty, function, and form. Safe, fast, "eye catcher," great speakers.

Weakness:

It's Made in Mexico, from German and Mexican parts. What ever it is, it doesn't meet my satisfaction of "German Engineering and Manufacturing." Having studied German, and been an exchange student, I honestly believe that you have to buy German. Now, I learned that you have to Buy German, From Germany. The car is appealing, really fun to drive, does very well 90% of the time. But the other 10%, you get ratty doors, cheap plastic, cloth seats that can't be "de-fuzzed," or bad parts. I had the "up-stream Oxygen sensor," the gas latch motor, and radio replaced. Disappointing.

What do you get when you let a country, who offered Germany the USA for only the lower portion of the US 50 years ago? Mexicans should make cars, they have no history in the car industry.

There has to be a catch to offer "everything" like the new Jetta does. The catch is bending corners in production, to make any profit. Just like Korean cars, but some how these get 5 stars out of 5 for safety.

It is a catch 22 for me, I love the car, and hate the car.

It is one fun car to drive, what I have pulled in the car make anyone with a BMW, look stupid for spending so much and not really pushing that car.

I have, gotten air, pulled 360s on streets, 180 parallel parking, reached 115mph (MAX on the flats), gone off roading (don't rocks will get in the plastic, and you will never hear the end of rattling in the acceleration), the only thing I haven't doesn’t is "christen" this car with my girlfriend (I'm not looking forward to it, but out of principal I will), and sleep in it.

Maybe I have been stupid. This car, does well for stupid ness. But isn't a BMW, but would I do the same thing in a BMW?...Maybe, the Jetta is my baby and I have become attached to it.

I also been told, "don't get attached to inanimate objects." But if you have the spirit of VW, or think you could, you may understand. The Passat maybe the panicle of VW, but then there is always the A4 for a similar car.

I don't know who it is, but after seen "American Graffiti," I feel a hopelessness to be driving a German car, but image is king, and this is better than

weak cd changer option. It intermittently fails to read a CD or it sometimes skips.

$21k via autobytel....$650 over invoice, all options were at invoice. options: alloy wheels, v6, sunroof, cd chgr. if you want to see bad cupholders look at the LR Disco II. These are ok cupholders...you just have to get used to tilting the drink to the side in order to get it in. The cloth seats attract everything...black polar fleece and tan cloth do not mix! the armrest interferes with shifting a bit. review is at about 5k miles. Instrumentation lighting is very appealing. Trunk is HUGE! Backseats are a little cramped for large persons, but then i'm 5'10" at 165lbs...no problem for me. stock stereo is great too! consider an aftermarket cd changer instead of the changer option. mpg is about 25-30 on the hwy. overall-> very very fun to drive! my wife wants a flower holder just like the bug's have.

Strength:

this car has lots of power cause of the low end torque ( more torque than b.h.p. of 174), and the 4 cylinders are too under powered for a 2.0 displacement. Of course the cool blue and red color scheme. Really smooth shifts on the automatic, and great safety feature where the doors lock automatically at a set speed, usually at 10-15 mph. Mine is almost a fully loaded gls, with leather, sun roof, vr6, and 15 inch wheels, but i cant stand cloth. If u can afford it get the glx, it comes with everything above but 16's, climatronic, a trip computer that usually only comes in luxury cars, and infared laser rain sensing wipers. If all this sounds usless what i have is more than enough.

Weakness:

the cup holders are useless. i have 10,000 miles/8 months on my car and theres a list of problems already. Heres the list.....tranny pan leak, coolant regulator leak, trunk light was hanging down, plastic piece on floor was unbolted, replaced my ECU, wrongly aimed headlights, foggy headlight lens, front passenger window actually fell in the door & wouldn't go up, and FINALLY back drivers side window would go down when i tried to put it up cause the pinch protection was too tight. Remember i ONLY had my car for not a year. Maybe its me but at freeway speeds theres too much interior noise. The automatic has a mind of its own...please go for the stick. If u dont know how too drive one, learn in your new jetta or on another car pleaseeee. backing up is impossible through the rear window. Seating is unconfortable, its hard too keep your wrist on top of the wheel without hitting your knees on the bottom of the wheel. Rear room is so small they might has well made it a two seater, but instead of leg room you get a huge and i mean huge trunk. If u can get the glx rims cause the 195 m.m. width is too narrow. Maybe its because im a car fanatic where my dream car has a width of 295m.m. but still the tires might has well come from a bicycle.

I paid 24,500 which includes tax, destination,...etc., and financing

Very good looking car. Great gas mileage. Blue and Red interior lighted front pad adds charm to my Black Jetta. Smooth ride on the highway. The shift stick is very easy to drive. Huge trunk is nice. The manual is easy to read. Comes with a General Information video about Jetta. Key and remote all in one.

Weakness:

Cup holders could be better. Steel wheels. Afraid to park it next to other cars.

Paid $26600 Canadian for the base 2000 GLS 5-spd model with A/C, power locks, power windows, ABS, heated seats .. but no sunroom, monsoon system, CD-Changer and alloy wheels. I love to drive this car.

Strength:

I first bought this because i liked the look of it and its a vw. It was already 7 years old and pretty expensive for the age but in perfect condition. Nine years later, it is still in perfect condition. I've put slightly wider wheels, which helps, and a big stereo, which also helps and driven everywhere in it - Milan in Italy, all over Spain, over the Alps in winter. I've lived in it for weeks at a time, fitted three people in the boot (trunk for those 'over there') - all around 6ft4ins high. I adore the looks. I've left it for six months and it started first go (didn't even dis-connect the battery)even managed to get 53mpg on a good run. Always thrashed it everywhere; keep it in the higher rev band and take corners tight and there are few 'normal' cars that can get away.

Weakness:

I only have one problem ... the fuel filler pipe is corroding and the sediment in the tank is blocking the fuel flow. Problem is to replace will cost £150 but the car is worth about £100. What do I do??

Paid £2100 (about $3360) in 1991 and would very much like to keep it on the road - I heard that the engine had just been removed from one that had been damaged - the engine was practically perfect after 750,000 miles - not bad.

Model Reviewed: Jetta GLX VR6

Strength:

-German Design, The ride is incredibly tight with no squeaks or loose feel. Steering is very precise with no play whatsoever. Handling too benefits from this, giving it a cornering ability that I never expected from a sedan.

-Interior trim, the GLX package leaves no option out from this interior. The leather is of a fine grade that, so far, has shown no signs of wear. The blue/red lights are, for a lack of a better term, very cool. The stereo, coupled with the CD changer, has a very nice sound to it, except for a minimum volume that is still too loud on some CDs to hear conversations.

-Styling, the silver arrow is very popular with all that look at it. Everyone loves the way this car looks.

-Seating, it took me several months to get comfortable sitting so upright, but after a couple 6 hour trips, I realize that the seats are the most comfortable I have sat in.

Weakness:

-Emergency acceleration, the automatic has a fuzzy logic control system that wants to drive the car for you. On two seperate occasions, I have needed to step on the gas and go, but the engine has had to think about it for a second before actually allowing the engine to pull. This also becomes apparent when driving hard. Any quick changes from brake to gas will yield a pause and a horrible downshift that engages the traction control.

-Cup holder, if any one from VW reads this, THE CUP HOLDER SUCKS! It is possibly the most useless item I have ever encountered.

- Electric, I have 3500 miles on my car and the trip computer only works about 3 out of every 5 startups...the rest of the time it just refuses to boot up.

Price Paid $25,000...you pretty much get robbed if you are looking for the silver. A recent streak of commercials has made this color a rare find. I had to wait a month to find one and the dealer refused to deal on the price.

This is the first automatic I have ever owned, and it will be the last. I miss my stickshift and even though the VW stickshift is incredibly weak, I would recommend that you purchase the standard trans.
