Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

zooom zoom zoom !! Smooth, comfortable suspension. Interior made with quality materials. Comes standard with many options; one touch features (keeps your eyes on the road ) Manual transmission shifts Nice.

Weakness:

Dealer not able to get CD player,.... CD player should come standard. High octane fuel required... (not good when you live w/ 2.10 a gallon ouch!) Seat material is uncomfortable on bare skin.
Fiance wants to always drive.

21K I would highly recommend this car. Zippy, fun, yet smooth.

Strength:

My VW has been wonderful. Despite many reports of problems with A2 chassis Jettas, mine has been fault free other than normal wear and tear items, which considering the car has 150,000 miles has been pretty minimal. I have driven other A2 cars and none have been as strong engine wise or the interior as tight. Don't know if this can be chalked up to previous owner care or luck, but nothing has degraded since i bought it six years and 60,000 miles ago. Another note, always get 30+ MPG on highway and regularly see 35 MPG when i must drive at 65 MPH.

Weakness:

At speed road noise is a bit loud and gear ratios are short, but then this car was designed for the 80's and a 55 mph speed limit. Otherwise nothing to note....

This is probably a bit old a model to be of much use to anyone, but in speaking of VW reputation and history it becomes very subjective. Some people are going to complain about a lot of small things without knowing if this is common for new cars and some might even do it when the problem arose from their own misuse.

Strength:

I like the way it drives. You are conscienceous about the fact that you are driving all the time. You really enjoy being behind the wheel. Additionally, you feel like you are driving a more expensive car. This car is solid. At $19,000 US this car drives and feels better than my mothers $32,000 Volvo. I wouldn't trade for a minute (except to trade in the volvo and buy a GLX VR6!). Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans, all good cars. But you just can't compare. If you don't need the room, take a jetta over a maxima in a second! if you need the room get a passat!

Weakness:

Here's the list:
1. High beams are not effective. They don't light up signs that are above the roadway. The beam just seems to stop right above the pavement. Please email me if you have this problem too!!!
2. Little things...the back window that always sets off the pinch protection, the plastic floor vent that keeps popping out, the stupid drivers who ding the door at the market, and the back seat is a joke. can anyone say TR-6?
3. The 2.0 L is a good engine, and i don't have a problem with its acceleration. I WANT A NEW TRANSMISSION....gimmie the second gear off the 1.8T transmission, and please lower those damned RPM's!!! At 75mph it sounds like i'm gonna lift off! Seriously, at 60 mph, i rum 2800 rpm's. a 1998 gt runs 2600...this ratio changes as you accelerate....i'm afraid it's gonna blow when i put the cruise control on at high speeds.
4. the dealer can suck eggs.

if you want to spend around 20k, don't buy another car. just don't.
p.s. this car is wasted on you if you don't love to drive.

I love this car. Its roomy, its comfortable, and with a little modification it goes really fast. The interior is unmistakebly VW everything is in the perfect spot and ergonomics are awesome. It is ready for every weekend trip: beach , golf or mountain biking.

Weakness:

It could use a little more low end power, and repairs are expensive. But expensive reapirs are a given for German cars.

I bought the car used for $9,000. It is awesome, its a good car for any enthusiast who wants a little more room and everday useability in car. Springs, rims, exhaust, and air intake turned my JETTA GT into a Honda eating machine. Rember DRIVERS WANTED

Strength:

This i must say is one of the best cars on the road for the money. There are so many reasons why i decided that the jetta was the car for me. Firstly, this car is a tank compared to other cars in it's class, you feel vary safe driving it with all of it's steel re-inforcements and such. The only cars which seem to have the same sturdiness that i have driven are the Audi A4 and and BMW 540, but there rather expensive aren't they? SEcond this car handles great, you can feel very confident banking into turns at 100kmh or 65mph. Third, i have leather interior, which when you first sit in it feels very stiff, but after 2 weeks of driving stretches slightly and becomes more comfortable, this is the most comfortable car i've ever owned. Fourth, the incredible amount of idiot feature's, have you ever left your radio on? well no more this car turns it of automatically when you pull out your keys, also the sound for leaving your lights on is extremly annoying so your really encouraged to turn them off, just to name a few. I must say also that the new keys are rather fun and amuzing to play with on there own, they are a spring loaded flip key, i've enjoyed hours of play with them, but don't ;ose these babies cause they cost $100 a piece. Lastly, the diesel engine is incredible, i've never driven a diesel before and i'm very impressed. I get roughly 725km/tank, not sure how many miles that is, and the way gas prices are now i'm glad i have the diesel. This is a definate drivers car as they advertise, i highly recommend test driving this car if you can afford it, mine all taxes included came out at $28,000 canadian. If you can't afford this car look at the Golf if it is at all suitable, but if you really can't afford a Volkswagon avoid test driving one because you will always compare the car you do buy to the VW and you'll never really appriciate it. Oh, and if you have the chance drive an A4 then the Jetta or Passat you'll be shocked how similar these vehicles are. Also, the 32,000km warranty is great, Volkwagon prides itself on it's service too, Look forward to being able to drive this car over the 300,000km mark.

Weakness:

Well, I have few complaits. The 90hp in the diesel engine gives great fuel economy and can run very well through all ranges of speed however on steep hills it doesn't have that great burst of energy you might expect from a gas engine. Also, the pick up between the 0-30 range is slower than gas engines so don't look to rip past your competition at the stop lights. However, these complaints are minor in comparison to what this car has to offer. But if you are looking for a car with a lot of power under the hood I recommend looking at the V6 engine model or the 1.8turbo engine for the Jetta. Notice i didn't mention another car model, this is because once you drive a volkswagon you can never go back to another vehicle.

As far as i'm concerned i wouldn't have been happy with any other car. MY last car was a 91 Jetta which had 450,000km when i finally turned her out to pasture. I've had my new Jetta which is Blue with grey leather by the way for 4 weeks now and i've already put 6000km's on it. Of all the models the GLS is the best value, the GL is the standard with all the basic options and the GLX is only worth it if you want the V6 engine, you get all you really need in the GLS. My dealer gave me an excellent price on this car which should have came out to $32,000 but i paid $28,000 Canadian. I must say however that i've been a long term customer at that dealership, but i thought that ws impressive, imagine a dealership rewarding you for being a good customer. I'd recommend this car to anyone, the target market is those under 45 but i think almost anyone would be happy driving this car. What are you waiting for go to your bank set aside some money then go for a test drive, don't do it the other way around because the wait will drive you insane cause once you test drive this car you will not wan't to leave the lot without one

The Ford Focus is a cheaper version of the Jetta, the Jetta out performs it in every way in my opinion. The great thing with Volkswagon's is that there are relativly few options, the only option on my car was an Automatic Trans and cold weather package(heated mirrors and washer nozzles) everything else was standard. On the Focus everthing was extra sunroof, A/C, power. Avoid all the bits and pieces hastle of a notrth american car and buy a better quality german one. Besides the Jetta looks alot better too.

Strength:

I bought a 2.0 litre gas in April '99. My son bought a TDI in June '99. I get about 7.5 l/100 kms or 33 mpg/US gal. or 39 mpg/Canadian. My son gets up to 64 mpg/canadian with his TDI. We both like the and have had no real problems. My son has over 45000 kms in a year with no problems. If I drove that much, I would buy a TDI also. His wife's car is a '94 Golf with the diesel engine and has almost 400,000 kms with no problems.

Weakness:

Paint could be better (some spots not totally covered and some drips in the clearcoat. The brakes tend to be dirty and squeak but that may be common to many cars because of the ban on asbestos brake pads. The seats start to squeak after awhile but that's easily fixed with some spray lubricant on the bearing points under the seat.

The prices in Canada are a steal compared to the US since the pricing is rated to the county. Essentially, most vehicles are relatively cheaper in Canada. I paid about $23K Cdn for a Jetta GLS which if I had about $15, 400 US would have equalled this amount. When I bought this vehicle in April 99, it was quite unique and many people approached me in the parking lots asking me about the vehicle and complimenting the styling. Now, with the phenominal success of VW products in the last 18 months, it is quite common to see new Jettas and other VW products everywhere. The crash test and empirical data from news reports show these vehicles are excellent. This is very reassuring to me becuase I bought the vehicle before these tests were available.

I spent about 40 hours on the "Net" deciding what to buy. I was most influenced by driving my son's Golf while he borrowed my Ford Windstar to move stuff. I decided I wanted a good small car and narrowed it down to a Mazda Protege (which was tops in Consumer's Reports), Subaru Brighton or a VW Golf. When I decided on the Golf, I couldn't get what I wanted and got a Jetta instead. I'm happy with it, on the other hand, I would have been happy with a Golf.

Model Reviewed: Jetta GLS VR6

Strength:

Fit and finish are world class. V6 gets up and goes. Thoughtful, simple styling inside and out. Seats and steering wheel can be adjusted to anyone's comfort zone. Tons of standard features. Lowest priced European car with a V6. Free maintenance for the first 20k miles includes more than just oil changes.

Weakness:

The stock stereo. I wish I could have ordered it without a radio because I replaced it within a month. The ride is a tad to soft for a VR6. A sport suspension would make this car nearly perfect.

I went to the dealer looking to get a V6 Passat. I loved it, but decided to give the Jetta a try. I really liked it's smaller size, and it was substantially less expensive than the Passat. It took me two months to get the car. There were plenty of 2.0's available, but no VR6's with a 5-Speed could be found. I wanted silver w/black interior. Ended up with white w/black. Some people think that $21,600 is too much for a car in the Jetta's class. I disagree. It's the lowest priced V6 Europe has to offer. I searched long and hard for a car, and the only car that I'd rather have is a BMW 328i at nearly $40k. There are no American, and few Japanese cars as refined as my Jetta. You owe it to yourself to take it for a drive.

Everything but the looks

I love the way the Jetta looks. I love the way the new Jetta's look but I have to say that my car is a pile of crap. I have had nothing but minor or major problems that end up costing me more than my damn car payment. I have had problems with the locks, alarm, sun roof and everything else you could possibly think of. The employees are extremely nice and they even wash my car for me after they are done working on it so I never had to go to the car wash.

excellent gas mileage; beautiful interior (leather is firm and the instrument panel is awesome!); Monsoon sound system is the crispest I've ever heard; closing the doors gives a resounding "chunk"; the folding key (have to keep it from my friends so they don't stab themselves!); just beautiful to look at.

Weakness:

just one: too many people want to go for a ride or want to touch it! no! :-)

my parents gave it to me for my birthday BUT it cost $21370 + tax; I have everything... the sunroof, bigger tires, Monsoon sound system, CD player, leather, heated seats, the works; an incredible deal for what it really is worth; my friends love it even more than I do; I would definately recommend it to anyone, especially those who are looking to buy their teenager a new car or just to be young at heart :-)

1.8T is quick of the line, handles better than VR6, monsoon system is very crisp, great gas mileage.

Weakness:

Back seat is smaller than older jettas, shift into fourth is not as smooth as expected.

If you can get the right price on this car it is the best jetta available. On the road $20,000. (with luxury package & monsoon system). I would recommend the 1.8T over the VR6, save the money and get a better ride.
