Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Model Reviewed: Volkswagen Jetta 1.8T GLS

Strength:

Acceleration, Acceleration, Acceleration. What's not to like. Quiet, affordable, and easy to drive. Gas mileage is excellent. Don't quote me on this but I am pretty sure that after 80K you can get another free exhaust from VW. Free scheduled maintenance.

Weakness:

Could use a shorter throw in the shifting area for using the turbo. Need to keep the revs up.

Feel that I paid to much. 3% over dealer invoice. My weekend passion is driving cars from a new car lot and comparing prices and cars. After I drove this car I went back and bought it and never turned back since. I have driven all makes and models except exotics and this car was uncomparable. Should look into more horsepower.(www.awe-tuning.com)
This car is for anyone who has a high mileage job or just loves to drive
and wants not to be bored. Need to watch MPH, it will get up there quick without a thought.

great car - I recieved a rare acura legend coupe as a gift and had to sell the acura becuase i wasn't selling my jetta! the car has made me very happy. Great handling and endurance - i drive her pretty hard and have put lotsa miles on it siince recieved, but no big problems.

Weakness:

computer mechanics for the engine are screwy some times (tachometer). The new jetta's aren't as great as the old ones though. They almost seem too easy to drive.

bought it for 4900 three years ago with 119000 on it - haven't regreted it yet.

Model Reviewed: Jetta 2.0 5-speed

Strength:

Excellent looks, comfortable, resonably quick for a non-turbo four cylinder, blue lighting great and easy on the eyes, 28-30 mpg, and plenty of standard options(keyless entry, side airbags)

Weakness:

5 speed, while the only way to go for me, does have long throws, and it takes getting used to. Not so much a weakness but something unique. Real high engine speed, 75 miles per hour will put you at 3500 rpm, takes getting used to

I would recommend the car to anyone, as long as they understand they are not big cars. Huge trunk, gas mileage, decent power. If you can get a 1.8T, that is a great option that will give you the performance without any loss in mileage.

Having said that, i love my jetta. i got it two months ago, used with 14K miles(the family i bought it from was having a baby, needed a bigger car) and i only paid 14K for it, so i got a great deal. Recommend it.

Model Reviewed: /Jetta GLS VR6

Strength:

Handling, Power (acceleration), Style, Cargo space, everything!

Weakness:

The non-power seats have no tilting capabilities. That would have been a very "nice-to-have". Other than that, no weaknesses that stood out for me.

I would not only recommend this car to any type of buyer, I would even become its ambassador. I have owned two previous Volkswagens, namely a 77 Rabbit (that still is one of the funnest I've owned) and an 89 Fox. With the new purchase of my Jetta, I have no doubt become a Volkswagen owner for life! In fact, both my wife and I have to fight over who drives the car!

Similar Products Used:

I test drove the Nissan Altima GXE, Honda Accord V6, etc...Basically the usual suspects in a similar category and the only car that came close to the Jetta VR6 in almost all respects was a BMW 328 that a friend of mine has!

Model Reviewed: GLS 2.0L 5spd

Strength:

Beautiful lines, outstanding fit and finish, quiet interior, great sound system.

Weakness:

Poorly located cup holders, engine a little weak, turning radius limited.

Purchased our Jetta new in January of 1999 for my wife's daily driver. As a brand new model we had to wait two weeks for the one we wanted (GLS, Black, 5spd, cold weather package, upgraded to 16" wheels/tires). Overall we're very pleased with our purchase. The car has excellent fit and finish. Everything from exterior panels to interior design shows high quality and attention to detail. A very quiet car on the highway, and nimble in the city. Huge trunk! No problems so far after 23K kms (14K miles). Beware of the recommended but "unscheduled" service at 24K kms that is not covered by the 2yr/40K kms warranty. Not pleased about this let me tell you, but that's a VW problem, not a Jetta problem.

5spd transmission is easy to operate and acurate. Gauges are well placed, easy to read, and look great with the blue illumination at light. Stock stereo is excellent and outperforms many aftermarket installations. A highly recommended car for couples or small family!

Strength:

german, good acceleration, tons of options, big trunk, nice looking, cool blue dash lights, my wife is 5' and I am 6"2" and we are both very comfortable in this car.

Weakness:

VW roof rack makes a lot of noise. cup holders. had to order car and it took 4 weeks longer than promised. three head rests in back seat???
EXPENSIVE if you want it loaded.

I would only recomend this car with the VR6. I test drove the 2 liter and was really dissapointed. I have had 7 VW's (5 different models) and have had good results with all of them. I went with the GLX VR6 - leather seats, wood dash, cruise, sunroof, heated power seats, mirror defrosters, alum. wheels, cd player, etc... I even bought the roof rack from VW - which has more wind noise than any rack I have ever used. Couldn't find the GLX in a 5 speed so we ordered it. It took 15 weeks!!!! It was worth the wait. It is a great car, I love to drive it, when my wife lets me. I would like to see a 4wd model in the future. If you have kids, I would say go for something bigger. If you don't, spend the extra money and get it loaded. Your friends with BMWs and Audi's will feel very threatened.

I Love this cars features. With so many standard features available you did not need to add much. The cars responsivness is amazing. I accually enjoy the cup holders, they seem to hold many types of items. The trusck is huge which makes loading things a breaze. Everyone I know likes the crome on the automatic shifter(they ask if I installed that)

Weakness:

The back seat.....whats up with those, all of my passengers always complain about it!!!!! The seating matetial I feel is a piece of junk. The material picks everything known to man. I you don't vaccum it once a week it looks like a cat has been living there for days.

I would recomend this car to anyone in the market for a really nice looking and driving vechile....the saying is true DRIVERS WANTED, because the drivers seat is the best seat in the house. I was lucky and got silver for $26500 brand new with all the toy on a GLS (except leather, and VR6). I really do enjoy driving this car and if I don't plan on having kids anytime soon I will consider purchasing a second one.

Strength:

For the most part, this is a great car.
1...Monsoon Sound System
2...Interior is awesome. Nice dash(cool color scheme).
3...4 cylinder engine gets great acceleration and is relatively quiet.
4...Sleek styling and design. Very eye pleasing.

Weakness:

1...crappy paint job. I'm not sure if this is a problem across the board, but my Jetta seems to attract scratches quite easily. Just rubbing your fingernail very lightly across the body is enough to create some deep scratches.
2...strange noises when I start the car. I'm going to check into this real soon. Hopefully the dealership will know what's up.
3...cup holders. THESE ARE QUITE POSSIBLY THE MOST USELESS PIECES OF TRASH I'VE EVER SEEN. NOTHING FITS IN THEM!
4...cramped back seat. Enough said.

The sound system is awesome. The 8 speaker Monsson system is the way to go. I love it...plus I can blast my music because it is impossible to blow these speakers. Overall handeling is nice too. Negotiates turns well...good suspension. Good gas mileage. I go to school almost 300 miles away and it has yet to fail me. Overall a very attractive car. Buy it if you want to look like a million bucks in a very reasonably priced car...don't buy it if your looking for something roomy and spacious.

Strength:

I love the drive and the smooth acceleration. Very appealing to view. Comfortable ride and HUGE trunk! Nearly 40 miles to the gallon. Inexpensive to maintain.

Weakness:

here is my list:
-plastic trim is a waste of space
-the only cup holders are in the back seat
-pre-amped speakers are expensive to replace
-no acceleration at high speeds

For the money you cannot beat the car. I paid $3500 for it and I know I made a wise investment. Perfect for a teenager. If this car can handle my driving, it can handle anything! I recommend VW all the way baby!!

Similar Products Used:

Honda Prelude... VW surpasses all Honda products. My Honda spent more time in the shop then I spent in the car. My Jetta has costed me less to buy and very much less to maintain.
Verdict... VW makes a better car than Honda ever could imagine.
