Strength:

Unusual design, sleek looking and very eye catching.

Weakness:

This car has many flaws; first the interior is cheap...parts either peeled, broke or fell off. My inside door handles color peeled within the first month of ownership. The armrest compartment latch broke off after a few months and the radio/cd buttons got stuck after several months. The exterior was also bad, the first week my tire bubbled. My trunk latches never worked and had been in and out of the dealership about 4 times. My check engine light came on after 2 months due to a malfunctioning Oxygen Sensor. My automatic windows hesitated in rolling up and down and sometimes remained stuck. Etc. Etc. Etc. So many things to write, I repaired the flaws and sold it with less than 12,000 miles on it.

This car has been a total lemon from the first week of ownership! The fresh, trendy look is only a mask for the countless number of flaws and engineering mistakes made on this car.

Mentioned above.

This June will be my 2nd year anniversary with my beetle. Honestly, I enjoy driving it and it has not had too many problems. My driver side window does have problems going up, my inside door handles started peeling after one year, and my left rear corner light had popped out. But those are the only problems so far. The great handling, smooth ride, quick pick up on the freeway, good sound system, and attractive aesthetics surpass those few problems. But after reading most of the individuals with problems, I wonder why some people are having extreme problems and some aren''t? There must be something wrong with the Quality Control Dept.

Strength:

awesome body style Love the "smallness" of the car can park it anywhere! Also love my green color (very attention getter) Very fun to drive!

Weakness:

Interior not as up to standard with the peeling handles Wish better gas mileage on Hwy 6-speed should be available on all models!

I love my beetle. I have had the following problems from the car. 1) the airbag light came on and of course I flipped out and took it to the dealership-they fixed within a day after searching for the part I needed. 2) the trunk refused to close, I took it to the dealership to get it looked at(they made me wait over an hour and I got mad and left) I ended up fixing it myself. 3) the interior door handles are peeling! Other than those problems that has been it. Especially after reading all of the other reviews left by other beetle owners. I do wish that I had the new sport 6-speed in my car I think that would help alot with the highway driving that I do. The car is tacking at 4,000 rpm''s when doing 70-80. I don''t have the turbo or the diesel car. But currently the solution I have to the interior arm handles peeling is that I am going to remove them from the car and peel off the rest of the stuff and put them back in the car. After all it is tan underneath also! But I love it and will probably keep mine until it completely dies! Also recommend never getting your VW serviced at Flow VW in Winston, they have horrible service. I switch service to another dealership that knows how to treat their customers.

Strength:

Very comfortable seats, fine stereo, great handling, and of course the unique styling

Weakness:

Cup holders are a joke, and the cd changer is a little temperamental. And the gas mileage should be better!

I really haven''t had any problems, except for a sticking power window, which was fixed under warranty. I''m surprised the mileage isn''t better; mostly highway driving (65-70 mph) yields only around 28 or 29 mpg. I''ve only just barely missed 30 mpg on occasion, and it just seems like it should be better. Seems very crash-worthy (I''m sorry to say!)... got rear-ended about 6 mos after purchase. The car that hit me (small Suburu) was demolished while I suffered only a dented bumper. Gotta like that full-sized spare lying flat behind the bumper! New bumper, some lights etc., and paint job cost the insurance co. $1000 to fix. And I''m glad the airbags didn''t deploy, I guess since it was a rear-end collision.

cute and that''s about it! all the time it was getting fixed i was driving a nissan altima which felt so good, so right, so normal. dealership tries to fix it but they can''t because it''s junk. 7 cup holders for a car that fits 3 people...now that is a strength. everyone can have two drinks and still have room in one for toll change. you will never get a speeding ticket because if you drive over 55 the engine revs so high and then gas milage will no longer be a strength. dealership begs you to say 5 and yes to questions asked on the service follow up call so they stay strong and 5 star...now that is a strength!

Weakness:

made in mexico while the people making it must be doing shots of tequila. bad bad car to buy unless you want to hang out at the dealership-get to know everyone on a first name basis and then get screwed by the service manager with a fraudulent receipt or receipts (who knows anymore). i''m sorry is what they say and they expect you to accept the apology and forget about it for 20 days so you can pay for all the problems after the lemon law protection runs out. they say trust us and we''ll treat you right. i am meeting with a vw of america rep on monday and will let you know if i got treated right. all the money they lay out replacing parts and service they make up as soon as the warranty runs out...this is why beetles are still being sold. it''s not fun when the repairs come out of your pocket but that is what they must live for. i would say get the extended warranty but i say you are a fool if you buy this car like i was. i stop everyone that has one and 9 out of 10 times i hear the oil story and other horror stories...ask around yourself if you don''t believe me!

worst car ever. it''s like driving a bomb only it new!!! checking and filling oil constantly that just disappears. radio!tapes get stuck in, back button doesn''t work. if you''re a news junkie forget the am stations you can''t hear a clear word and then you could get stopped because the blinkers don''t work when radio is on am! air bag light on required a new instrument panel because they would not go off in an accident and that new panel caused a new and different problem to emerge...screeching noises every day but not everytime you sstart the car. another iffy situation, fuel cap door broke and i''m sure there are other problems i am forgetting. 15,112 miles is what this car has and not driven 7 1/2 months of the almost two years i own it! it''s been in the shop approx 25 days getting fixed. the air bag instrument cluster problem happened two weeks after delivery and the oil problem constant. the best is that they had the car for nine days and the receipt said it was ready after one. the car is a lemon and now they are lying saying that they could not find my number!!!! when for two years they have called me a zillion times and also the car they rented for me had my phone numbers...just an excuse to try and squash the time needed for the car to be out of service for the lemon law. all the service manager said i''m sorry and why does this date mean so much to you anyway! dah! want my money back dah so i can go back to a japanese car that is trouble free even when you never change the oil! lemon law says to take them to court. this court word flips them out and i can''t figure out why. it''s time for a divorce from the car and dealer..the love is gone because the trust is gone just like the oil. if any one wants a beetle please buy mine! we are down to a screeching sound and a radio on wait. i can''t guarantee any part for more than a week although it just got new piston and rings at 15000 miles. right now they want drivers...soon they''ll need drivers.

Strength:

Very cute looking car -- sort of like a moving umbrella!

Weakness:

Bumping and slight jerking when shifting gears. Also the car is much too close to the ground. Got lots of knicks and bruises on the lower bar on the molding bar, as well as under the front bumper. The car is also VERY OVERPRICED!!!!!!!

Like everyone else, I bought this car because it was the cutest little set of wheels I ever saw. I was besotted with them ever since they first came out in 1998. My decision to buy one was really based on the fact that I felt that I HAD to have one. After reading the reviews posted on these pages, I spooked. I have also experienced problems with the power window (on the driver''s side), and have also noticed the paint peeling off the door handle. Other than that, no problems--- the car only had 7200 miles on it. After reading the other reviews posted on these pages, and with the problems with power window, as well as the peeling paint -- I concluded that it was an evil omen. I unloaded it and have just purchased a Toyota. I feel much better about it, and am feeling very relieved, even though I''ve taken a financial bath on the Beetle. But I guess it was something I had to get out of my system.

Strength:

Fantastic fuel milage. Very crashworthy for a small car. Excellent space for travelling for two. Very fun to drive with its great low speed torque.

Weakness:

Low ground clearance (a challange on snowy roads or over road debris). Rear seat headroom is tight.

We love our little diesel. It has very spunky acceleration and is great for regular commuting. Front seats are comfortable and fuel milage is outstanding at over 40 mpg in city driving, or about 50 on highways. Hatchback gives great space for hauling gear when back seat is folded. Front seats are great for long distance travel and the car is a very willing long distance cruiser. Over 3 years and 39,000 miles, reliability has been great with only one failure (condenser for A/C needed replacement under warranty). It is unusually fun to drive, has personality with its growly little diesel, and is as safe a small car as you can get.

Strength:

Cuteness, speed (turbo model), limited edition color - vapor, interior - leather

Weakness:

anything electrical, clutch problems, basic features that shouldn''t break with in the first year; window motors, spoiler, starter

This is the worst car I''ve owned. I only have 35,000 miles on it and the amount of electrical problems I''ve run into are insane. My Beetle has been in the shop almost every month since I bought it. The list of problems looks like this: Drivers side window motor, passenger side window motor, clutch sticking for no reason, car dying in traffic for no reason, check engine light on 2 for no reason, strange beeps for no reason, door finish peeling away, arm rest finish peeling away, Spoiler getting stuck in the up position, spoiler not engaging when it should, and the list goes on. I feel cheated, because the service guys can never find the problem, thus they can never "duplicate" it. They just look at me like I am stupid and am making it all up. I would strongly caution anyone purchasing this vehicle.

Strength:

Weakness:

Everything else.

Without a doubt, this is the worst car we have ever owned. The check engine light has been on for more than half the 35,000 miles that are now on the car. Every time we take it to the dealer to get it fixed, they charge us about $100 and the light is usually on in less than a month. In addition, they forgot to lubricate the windows which broke the motor which WE had to pay for as the car was out of warranty by the time that broke. Other problems include the gas tank lid release not working which stranded my wife, wipers not working, and the turbo - oh man, that has had hoses break, valves lock up etc. VOLKSWAGON"S WARRANTY IS THE WORST IN THE INDUSTRY, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN AFTER 24,000 MILES!!!!!!!
