Model Reviewed: New Beetle GLS 1.8T

Strength:

Attracts attention, seat-pressing acceleration (turbo model only) better gas mileage than less-powerful 4 bangers (yes, I said 4) Lots of headroom, handling, visibility is wonderful.

Weakness:

Stereo eats tapes. Car has funny smell that cleaning did not remove. Cheap & easily damaged front bumper! Cupholders & stereo a joke.

I bought a new 2001 GLS 1.8T after test-driving the little bugger. Fantastic acceleration (turbo only) and great handling make it a blast. I got the automatic tranny (I commute 700 miles per week) and it doesn''t seem to cut the power at all. The only problem with 7000 miles has been a "fuse" under the air-injection housing that blew and made the check-engine light come on. Service manager could not determine why fuse blew. After reading mileage stories, I''m beginning to wonder if there''s something else wrong...I get 26 mpg TOPS, premium gas, 65, no air! Hmm. Cheap front bumper housing...I hit a rock and the foglight & grille popped OUT of the bumper. Oh, and there''s something up with the winshield washer mechanism...all it does is smear everything and spray the roof of the car instead of the windshield. Stereo is a joke--my Toyota has 2 speakers and sounds better. And of course, the cupholders hold like a kid-size coke. But it''s a blast to drive, and still gets better gas mileage than my V6 or my old, less-powerful RAV4. Love those heated side-mirrors on foggy nights!. Hatchback design gives much trunk space...but you can''t recline the front seats simultaneously. Seats might be stiff due to side-impact airbags. with the rear seats down

Strength:

It''s cute.

Weakness:

All of the above. I hate to say it, but there are just too many problems with the beetle. It''s really not worth all the heart aches. I cringe when I''m writing my car payment check.

I bought my beetle on July 7th, 2001 and my problems started July 8th, 2001. My car has been in the shop each month sice I bought it. It is currently in the shop for 8 different reasons, brakes, anti-lock brake system (totally broken), the A/C quits working after driving for an hour. (not fun in Texas weather). Those are just a few of the problems I''ve had and will probably continue to have. Just to let all ya''ll know, if your beetle starts beeping (like when a construction truck backs up) that means your ABS is not working.

Strength:

Seems to be well built. Controls are well-placed. Good take-off with the manual transmission.

Weakness:

I had the car about 3 weeks, went out to start it and the car was dead. Wouldn''t make a sound when I turned the key. Long story short: my new beetle had to be towed away by the dealership, and it was gone a solid week. The mechanics attributed the problem to a computer chip gone bad...apparently the engine fan was running 85% of the time, even when the car was sitting in my driveway, and this ran the battery down to nothing.

Overall this is a very fun car to own and drive. Be advised, though, this is meant for 2 people maximum; the back seat is a complete joke. Body style is super cool.

Strength:

Handling, steering feel. Visual design.

Weakness:

Engine, engine, parts and construction quality. Price- same $$ can buy a lot more car, even within VW. Efforts like this make Detroit think it''s got nothing to worry about. I would have bought one of those if I wanted so many problems.

In a word- the engine sucks; did I mention the durability of interior trim? This is one of the most fun cars I''ve driven from a handling perspective, and the front is quite comfortable for extended trips. But there has been nothing but problems with the engine from day one. Mileage is laughable, not to mention the pathetic acceleration. A 2.0 four-banger that gets worse mileage than most high output V6s?! While screaming and wheezing to keep up with a Civic?! Two O2 sensors within 4 months of each other, an airflow meter and now a silent recall on the ECM. The passenger door lock electrics fried, taking out the security system with it. The fuel door release hatch fails under 23 degrees F and the remote trunk release mechanism has dislodged several times because you have to close it so hard to keep the hatch open light from coming on. Almost every minor piece of trim and the headrests have had problems and the steering never quite stays true. Is it any wonder the warranty had to be changed to 4 years? Several other friends with ’99 vehicles and/or 2.0 engines have echoed similar complaints. Apparently Wolfsburg may have made some strides in visual design- but their quality of execution still leaves to be desired. Love driving the vehicle, handling almost makes up for everything, but will likely not buy anything from VW/Audi again. Shame, the new A4 is appealing. I’ll be getting my Fahrvernugen not from Wolfsburg or Ingolstadt, but from Munchen’s spinners.

Strength:

Head turner, easy to spot in the parking lot, great head room and the moonroof just makes it seem even more expansive, one touch power windows, monsoon stereo system rocks, articulating front seats make it easy for rear passengers to get in, dashboard lights are cool, easy to reach stereo and A/C buttons (at least they are for me!) telescoping steering wheel a god send for someone of my stature (5'' only), great gas mileage...

Weakness:

the cup holders have all cracked already! and I hardly use them... cup holders under the dash don''t leave much room for an actual cup..I use them for change...small trunk but I knew what I was getting so not VWs fault...front passenger seat belt bangs the interior of the car with windows and roof open (can be distracting)

My husband and I have always owned American made cars (an once even a Japanese one!) with varying degreees of satisfaction. We decided to give the Germans a try. Long story short, we were so happy with our new Beetle we went back and bought a Jetta. We are both very happy with the cars and our dealer has been outstanding...what a change.

Strength:

Cute to look at. Good gas mileage

Weakness:

Everything including the dealerships that sell them and the departments that service them

Worst car I could have ever gotten. The car burned oil from the day I got it. It would run out of oil before I needed an oil change. The headlights needed to be replaced 4x before they both died completely and i had to pay $1000 to replace the electrical harness. Both power windows died-$350 a piece to fix. The hood latch broke. The window switches needed to be replaced. The vacuum lines in the car were also replaced. This was the only problem that was covered under warranty, everything else came out of my pocket. As far as the car burning massive amounts of oil my dealership says that is perfectly normal and that I should be checking and filling my oil w/ every other gas fill up. In a 3 year lease I ended up putting about $4000 into this car before I could get rid of it! Think twice before you buy one!

Everything!

Weakness:

Not a one in my book!

What can I say... This has been the best car I have ever owned! I have had no problems. The car is now 1 yr and 2 months old and is perfect! It is so much fun to drive. Feels like no other car. I was looking at the BMW and the small Mercedes, but when I sat in this New Beetle it stole my heart! There is no other car on the road that I would trade you even for! I LOVE IT!

Strength:

Its a Funny car, it turns heads. 1.8T power, very tweakeable.

Weakness:

Quality.

About the idiot before me, New Beetles are made in Brazil, not in Mexico, the only VW vehicles made in Mexico are the old beetles, anyway this car sucks, i have a friend that has a New Beetle 1.8T, he had this car for about 5 months and he had nothing but troubles with it: - Sunroof fall apart. - Trunk wont open. - The A/C smells like it has a dead cat in it. - The dash cover is beggining to fall apart. - The paint in the cup holder after the shift knob is beggining to peel. Only to mention a couple of things I also have more friends with diferent VWs with lots of problems, the only good VW is the old beetle.
