Strength:

OK gas mileage. A great paper weight.

Weakness:

Quality of materials and assembly. Borderline criminal customer support from GM. Problems that have existed for years in these vans are still present in the 2002 models.

This was the vehicle from hell from day 1. Shortly after purchase, we had water running inside the van around the fuse box. No sealant was placed between the fireall and the kick panel. The transmission would never shift out of first until the engine was redlined during the first drive of the day. Even though TSB''s existed on this issue, multiple dealers would not reflash the E-PROM to correct. Then the steering column universal started locking up. At 29,000 miles the steering started to thump. Found the front suspension had come loose from the chasis. By 36,000 miles we had a rear transmission seal and a rear differential yoke go bad. No towing mind you. At 38,000 we had fuel coming out of the charcoal canister that was mounted to the front of the gas tank. GM said since it was past the warranty period it was my responsibility now. After 3 years of investigation with the NHTSA, we finally got GM to recall 111,000 of these vehicles due to poor manufacturing practices of the gas tanks at the factories. Of course Chevy still would not reimburse me because they lost the original repair bill and a photocopy or dealer replacement was not acceptable. I do have the NHTSA investigation file and now that I no longer own the vehicle, I plan on addressing GM''s responses to the investigation. Over the next 50,000 miles we had an interior door panel fall off, a window fall out, rear and side door hinge failures, another rear differential yoke failure, a dashboard that cracked, the gas pedal fell off, the air conditioner compressor exploded and yearly replacements of the a/c knobs. The transmission finally failed at 104,000...must be a world endurance record for a new Chevy. Within days of the transmission replacement, the engine began to miss on the highway and the power steering pump failed. It was promptly traded in. Unless you plan on sinking alot of money into one of these vans, I would stay away from the.

Strength:

I purchased this model with the 6.5 turbo charged diesel, it''s got the moxy allright! It''s G.V.W. is 9,500#, E.W. is 6,200#, it can carry 3,300 pounds, no problem! Guts when you need power for sure. Carrying capacity when you need to haul the heavy skids.

Weakness:

G.M needs to quality control inspect carefully every point in body construction! This van was put together very badly!

Poor driver seating - sitting on a oak board would probably be more comfortable, poor hvac system - difficulty maintaining steady or constant temperature, poor am/fm stereo / difficulty using controls, poor cruise/wiper controls, when wipers are on, the cruise control is in a different position, thumping noise on acceleration from a standing stop - possibly an engine mount? gaps in the side opening doors - holding a light on the outside of the side doors at night, you can see the door gaps, and, when traveling, you can hear road noise, what''s worse is that the door hinges were welded in-place, instead of bolted on, making adjustments impossible. I was also lied to about financing! I was initially told I could get 5.5% financing through G.M.A.C., then was told after about 5 hours of waiting at the dealer that the best they could do was 10.5%, due to my credit report, which they lied about too. Oh, and while they were supposed to have done a final inspection before delivery? it must have not been done, my van was delivered to me with no fuel cap.

Strength:

Full frame construction, excellent gasoline engines (5700, and 8100 Vortec), rear wheel drive, excellent seating position, functional sound systems, proven transmissions (4L60E, and 4L80E), excellent value compared to what you get with a pickup truck

Weakness:

Horrible steering systems, general accessiblity through front doors, cheap interior, no decent mid range models available (between LS and LT models, No good diesel engine available (I had to settle for a gas engine), no diesel avaiable in 1500

I''ve always been fascinated with the Chevy Express/GMC Savana. It is a very unique vehicle to drive. I have had a few problems with my Express so far. 1. The torque convertor quit locking one day. The problem was water intrusion to the electrical connector on the side of the transmission. This could have easily been avoided if GM spent the extra $0.05 and put dielectric grease in these connectors. I''ve since added this special grease to all electrical connections outside the passenger cabin. 2. The second problem seems to be an ongoing one. The steering system is terrible. The van has never driven straight. It leads heavily to the ditch. The alignment was checked at three dealerships. Now the steering is making a funny howling noise when you turn the wheel to the right. I will be reqesting that my entire steering system be replaced. I believe all GM vehicles are plaqued with steering problems. I''ve rented many GM vehicles, and some I would describe as "dangerous" under certain situations. It''s a very well build vehcile, except for the cheap interior.

Strength:

The room and comfort are its most valuable strengths for me, but the 5.7ltr has proven to be a true powerhouse. Ours was custom coverted by Debut and I haven't had a single problem. It was definetly a step up from our Tahoe.

Weakness:

Cant really think of any weakness other than possible the 13 miles per gallon in the city (but you have to sacrifice something for that much comfort.)

Window Sticker was $38,000 with conversions. Paid just over $30,000. So far its been the best purchase I've made.

Model Reviewed: /Chevy Express Conv. Van

Strength:

Handling has been excellent for such a large and heavy vehicle. Gas milage good stand improvement. Does not "wander" on the highway like my E-150 Conv. tends to do. High top reacts to wind, but that's expected.

Weakness:

Steering wheel should be closer to the driver's seat. Dash stereo controls could be tilted toward the driver.

So far a good investment.

Similar Products Used:

1997 Ford E-150 conversion van; low top. Express handles better in close quarters driving than the Ford. Ford seems to have better power although both have similar engine configurations (350ci V8). Express has by far the better A/C system. You'll freeze in 10 minutes.

Weakness:

front tires lose air daily, transmission slips, front brakes replaced at600 miles, conversion poorly done

GM has the policy of not fixing problems, they would prefer to have the buyer take legal action. The dealership also would perfer legal action verses doing the right thing. Long time GM employee, but, this 2000
Express has convince me that GM is no longer the leader it should ber.
