Apparently a transmission problem that noone can or will fix

In shop as we speak third time for transmission seals leaking. Instead of fixing the real problem they just keep putting more seals in. This van has 15,000 miles on it. Chyrsler does not seem to care either so I guess I will just keep taking it back.

A BIG FAT ZERO (0)

Weakness:

Everything. Even the outside of the car dings easily.

I bought this van 3 weeks ago. 2 weeks ago I had to replace the Water Pump at the Crysler Dealer on La Brea in Los Angeles. Once repaired when picking the van up I heard a little noise which I paid no attention to. Less than 2 weeks later the van stopped on me. The same dealership told me it was the Can Sensor and Fuel Pump, which I had to replace. When I picked the van up there was still a little noise but I was told I would have to pay $90.00 to have it checked! I took it to an independent repair shop and found out there is an oil leak and who knows what else because they can not do a diagnostic test until Monday!! I don't recommend this van to anyone.

car shuts off while driving. very unsafe.

I bought this car brand new in Feb. of '06 and it has been nothing but a pain in the rear. There is a huge problem with it that the dealership cannot seem to fix. The car will shut off sometimes while driving it. The brakes and steering wheel lock up. It has happened about 10-15 times and we've had it in the shop 4 times. It has happened on a highway with two small children in the van and luckily there was nobody behind us. This van is totally unsafe to drive. The dealership has not been any help at all and I refuse to do any type of business with them ever again.

Strength:

Price. Ride. Pretty good interior quality. Very strong climate controls.

Weakness:

Gas mileage

We knew we were taking something of a risk getting a Dodge van instead of one of the superior offerings from Honda or Toyota, but research showed that the Caravan had vastly improved with the '01 remodel. Plus the Dodge was many thousands of dollars less than its better rivals. With the sale, the Caravan was $10,000 less than any Sienna or Odyssey in town. We figured that $10,000 could cover a LOT of repairs.

So far, almost five years into this venture, we have been pleasantly surprised. No money out of pocket--only a couple of recalls and one or two things covered by the warranty.
Now, we'll just keep our fingers crossed!

Model Reviewed: Dodge Caravan SE

Strength:

I specified the second-row captain chairs for my Caravan SE. These chairs are equipped with armrests and are very comfortable for adults to ride in. The van is spacious and the 3.3 liter engine is strong and reliable. The handling is responsive and the steering is effortless. I use the cruise control for highway driving and it tracks the selected speed within 2 k/h. The van came equipped with keyless entry, a driver’s side sliding door, privacy tinting on the second and third row windows and lighted vanity mirrors. Although we didn’t specify these features, we really appreciate them now and couldn’t do without them. On frosty winter mornings, I like the fast defrosters, the heated mirrors, and particularly the clever heating coils under the windshield wipers (all cars should have these!) Our van came equipped with the Infinity 10-speaker stereo system which gives you surround-sound effects if you tune in the right radio station.

Weakness:

DaimlerChrysler mis-engineered the brakes for the 1996-2000 Caravan/Voyager line. My front rotors warped at 20,000 km. I machined them on the brake lathe at work and they warped again a mere 6,000 km later. I replaced the front brakes with aftermarket parts and have experienced normal brake wear since then. Despite installing new brake parts, the van’s braking force is feeble at best. No amount of force on the brake pedal will result in short braking distances. The ABS shut down at 140,000 km due to a faulty wheel sensor, and the left rear brake cylinder seized due to corrosion. Also, the parking brake pedal no longer holds due to wear of the pawl and ratchet. These problems are all fixable, but extremely annoying in a van that has been carefully maintained and babied from day-one.
When new, the Caravan was equipped with Goodyear Conquest tires. These tires were noisy from the start and almost impossible to balance. I was very relieved when they finally wore out so that I could replace them with a good set of Michelins.
Although I have had good performance from the automatic transmission, it continually leaks. First from the oil pan, then from the rubber cooling hoses, and lately from the pressure switch solenoid gasket. Every time I stop a leak, the transmission seems to find a new place to drip red oil. I carry a gallon jug of ATF+4 with me and check the fluid level regularly.

I enjoy driving this mini-van. It is comfortable on long trips, powerful enough to haul my trailer with a snowmobile on it and to me, the styling is still very attractive even though newer minivans are moving away from the jelly bean body shape. My Caravan has been reasonably reliable, although it has the same brake problems as other Caravans and Voyagers of that era. I would definitely recommend the Dodge Caravan with the 3.3 liter engine as a good used car purchase. Avoid the 3.0 liter Mitsubishi engines and avoid the pre-2000 Caravans and Voyagers because of expensive transmission problems.

Smooth Ride, Quiet, roomy. AC worked great. Never felt under powered. The automatic sliding double doors very nice.

Weakness:

The rear gate motor had problems. The transmission had problems. The radio/CD player had problems. The dash/odometer had problems. The Dodge dealer told me that i should have serviced the transmission every 15k miles. Also, battery harness issues?

At the time we purchased this mini-van we wanted to buy a Honda. However, they where hard to find - very popular. So we liked the comfort, room, and quiet feel of the Grand Caravan. After 104k miles it sits in my driveway in a heap of melted metal and plastic from a transmission fire.

See review summary above

I HATE this van! It has been a lemon since day one! We purchased it 4 years ago for our son who is in a band and he needed to haul equipment. 6 weeks after we bought it the transmission went out and we spent $1400.00. We've put $5200.00 in this thing over the last 4 years, A/C has never worked (despite having the whole system replaced by the previous owner) the windshield leaked when it rained, you can't unlock the driver's side door with the key from the outside, the sliding side door jammed off the track, heater core has gone out, transmission leaks, oil leaks, radiator leaks, replaced fuel pump, starter, ignition module, rear brake cylinders, it has broken down so many times we had to get a roadside assistance policy to regularly have it towed. It sucks gas! Repairs have averaged $300.00-$500.00 bucks a pop. I'm getting rid of this thing NOW and I will NEVER own another Dodge product. My son's girlfriend has a 1997 Dodge Avenger and both the outside door handles have broken off and the inside passenger door handle has also. The drivers side door panel has caved in and you have to reach down in it to operate the power window & door lock buttons.
