Strength:
Comfortable, great handling, smooth ride, quiet, dependable. It is great for hauling the grandkids.
Weakness:
Have yet to find any. We have the 2000 Sport Van. Don''t know how this van gets such a bad rap (or rep). We have put almost 24,000 miles on it since we bought it just a little over a year ago and it has been wonderful. I have taken it on several business trips and have toured the east coast several times during that period. It hasn''t had one single warranty repair on it and no maintenance problems in that time with all those miles. The milage is better than the Chevy S-10 I was driving and the power and handling are better than many cars I have had in the past. It is quiet and comfortable on the road with the captains chairs and the sound system is wonderful. Unlike others'' experiences the transmission has been flawless and the engine hums for hours on end on our long road trips. It was involved in an accident and I was given a 2001 Dodge Sport Van and I must say that the 2000 is better appointed and more comfortable. I had rented a Ford Windstar for a day trip in the past and after several hours in it I find that the Dodge is a noticably better ride for my seating comfort and driver position. The Ford was good but the Dodge just seems to fit me better. Similar Products Used: Ford Windstar |

Strong motor, good stereo, great seats, nice creature comforts.
Weakness:
read above. Great looking van with comfortable seats and all the goodies. Awesome stereo. This van is expensive to maintain. Started getting a bothersome shake in steering at 35mph that was not cured with an expensive ($1,000) and time consuming trips to tire store. Every imaginable combination of tires and wheels was tried plus the replacement of other parts. Dodge said they''ve never heard this before-right-but the store manager has run into this same problem plenty of times. Wipers come on whenever they want to. New brakes needed far too often aqnd have heard the water on warm brakes story before too. What happens if you live in Seattle? Hard to track leak from under the engine has happened twice. Exasperating! Similar Products Used: first mini-van ever and researching other brands. |

Grand Caravan 3.0l, V6, EFI
Strength:
Lot of space, Good AC and heating. Low fuel consumption for such a big car. Comfortable for the driver and the passengers. Good on snow. Inaf power. Easy start also in winter and frost. Possible to repair and change parts. Easy for parking. Quite silent inside. When needed you have lot of space for cargo and bagage. Side mirors are very well designed and mounted. Cruise conrtol is very smooth and reliable.
Weakness:
Sliding door should have a handle on the upper corner as it is on the new models. Needs the mechanism of correction of head lights from the drivers seat, because when the VAN is empty, in dark lights permit to see very small distance and you have to drive slowly. My cruise controll unfortunately does not function on speeds less then 60 km per hour. No qualified repair and maitenance facility in the capital of Georgia - Tbilisi. Pare parts not avaliable locally. Vrey good impression. Quite reliable. It is running since 1996 till 2001 without official maitenance on quite bad roads, mountains, snow in winter. Never had problems with automatic transmission. I would like to switch over to AWD model. After 135,000 miles the engine consumes only 12 liters per 100 kilomeeters, but it started smoking and oftern needs to add the oil. ATF is leaking from Power steering system. I am considering to buy and install a new engine but I do not know the price and where to get the new engine. I need it to be shipped to Georgia. Similar Products Used: This is my first VAN. Before that I owned 3 sedans (LADA, 4 doors 5 passengers) and 1 AWD (LADA - NIVA, 2 side doors, 1 Back door, 4 passengers). |

Strength:
Roomy and comfortable. Looks nice.
Weakness:
Very poorly made and Dodge doesn''t care. We fell in love with the minivan when we rented one to go on vacation. We rented a Voyager and we should have bought one, but instead we opted for the Grand Caravan because of the room. The van drove great for the first two years. But after having it for about 23 months the transmission went. Thank God we had an extended warranty. We have had a gas leak, the brakes wear very fast and the rotors need replacing. The oil light comes on for no apparent reason and it is hard on tires. Our first transmission went at 44000 miles and was replaced by the dealer. It has gone out again at 122,000 miles and I guess we are really blessed. We have found someone to rebuild it and we will sale it even though we owe more than it is valued at. It seems all of the car dealers have heard about the Caravan. It was our first and our last. Something really needs to be done about Dodge. Similar Products Used: Voyager |

Comfortable to drive
Weakness:
***Transmission***, Automatic Idle speed motor, Brakes, Cruise Control. I had owned a 92 Dodge Caravan 3.0 V6, so I should have known better, but the 1996 Caravan was supposedly "Completely Redesigned" So I ass-u-me-d that they would have fixed all the problems that existed in the 1992 version. Well, as they say Assume makes and ASS out of U and ME. At 60,000 Miles, the stalling problems occurred (just as in my 1992 Caravan). This is the AIS motor failure that causes a dangerous intermittent stalling problem. The engine may cut out while you are driving at high speeds(You loose power steering and power brakes). Then at 71,000 the *&(#$!!! transmission dies, I loose reverse and high gear (exactly the same as in my 1992 Caravan) a nice $1400 repair bill. Here are some new problems that occur with my 1996 Caravan. Wipers come on once in a while for no reason, Cruise control works only once in a while. Air bag light comes on and off during driving. Things that happened on my 1992 Caravan that I''m waiting to happen now. At 80,000 miles the Valve stem seals go, nice blue oil smoke blows from the exhaust while you idle at traffic lights. Body computer relays fail causing instrument panels & speedometer to fail. By the way, my Father''s 1995 Dodge Caravan has had all ow the above problems as well as the peeling paint problem associated with most blue 1991 - 1995 models. My Father''s (Yep he was a sucker too!)1999 3.5 Liter Caravan needed new cylinder heads and gaskets at 50K. My wife''s 1994 Dodge Spirit transmission (same one that''s in the Caravan) went at 69,500 (Lucky for us it was still under warrantee) After two BS repairs from Crysler, they finally agreed to replace the transmission with a rebuilt one. Unfortuantely, the engine self destructed at 90K. I will never own a Crysler vehicle again. Pay the extra $$$ and get a better quality vehicle. Similar Products Used: 92 Dodge Caravan |

Strength:
Stiff suspension and great road handling. Plus the 3.8L V6 moves when you need to. The van looks sexy (sport model)
Weakness:
Front brakes, inside finish poor This is our first van. Overall we enjoy the product. A short wheel base full load powered by a 3.8L V6. At 4,500Km the front disks started vibrating during normal braking. At 10,000Km just before the dealer inspection, coins would fly out of the ashtray during highway braking. The dealer indicated it was the way we drive that caused the disks to become defective. They suggested that if you drive through a water puddle while the disks are very hot, they would warp. We then suggested to the dealer they should install disks that could withstand driving through water just like on other car brands. They decided to turn them rather than replace them. Today at 23,400Km we are still fighting Chrysler. We fear that the dash board falls off during braking. Strange as it my seem, the couple 3 houses away own a 1997 Intrepid and during a discussion they appear to have the same problems and had the front disks replaced 3 times so far. The owner of the corner store, owns a 1999 Plymouth Voyager and he to has the same problems. The question that boggles our minds is, is this all across North America, In Canada only, the East coast… Chrysler must surely have more that one disk supplier ! After just 20,000 kilometers the brakes were shot and the rotars were warped to the extent they had to be replaced. My blender has more power than this van(seriously) and thats with 1 person on-board! :( DON''T BUY THIS CAR--BYE this car!! P.S After only 33,oooK the transmission is slipping. Comfortable seats, lots of room. Just like in my living room. Costs more to run than the living room though.
Weakness:
Dodge cannot seem to get the transmission right - as is evidenced by the multiple (9)people I alone know that have replaced 1 or more of their Caravan transmissions. The engine doesn''t seem much better. Run from this car! We are on our second transmission and just had the car in the shop again - the transmission is almost gone and the head gasket is blown. The first transmission went out at 63,000 miles (despite the fact that the dealer repeatedly told us it was normal for the transmission to slip). At 75,000 miles we had a major oil leak. We replaced the brakes at the first sign they were due for repair but it was already too late - the rotors needed replaced too. Similar Products Used: None |

Poor engineering and quality. These vans look great on the road but are a nightmare to keep their. The Chrysler customer service experience makes you feel like youve been had. Very uncooperative and unwilling to work with the customer. The reps that I talked to basically read from a script that said and I do not quote. Your vehicle is out of warranty, we can not help. I have had more luck with my local dealer. I was in love with this vehicle the first year. Plenty of room for the family. Not great but OK power. However, it''s been all down hill since. Have been replacing front brakes at about every 8/10 thousand miles. I have replace the front rotors twice. At l 1/2 years replaced the AC H-valve. A few months later replaced the AC compressor. All covered under warrenty. At 2 1/2 years old we went over 36K and out of warranty. Cooling fan went at approx 40K - 200 out of pocket. 10 months after the compresser was replaced the commpressor went again, not covered by product warranty(12 month/12K miles) fought Chrysler they paid for the part. Labor cost 200.00 out of pocket. Now it''s 2 months later and the AC is not working again. Dealer advised that the evaporator is now bad. 800.00+ to fix. Have been going back and forth with Chrysler on this one. So far they have agreed to pay for the part. Repair bill will still be about 500.00+ out of pocket. I think I''m going the distance on this one. Will file an arbitration case shortly. Why should us Dodge/Chrysler owners pay for poor engineering and unacceptable quality. If you do buy this vehicle get the best extended warranty you can afford. You will need it!! Similar Products Used: None. First Chrysler product and will be my last. |
