Strength:

Very dependable. Always starts.

Weakness:

Rusty tailgates.

This is the second van of this type I have owned purchased for $1,000 from a private party with 170,000 miles on it. I have since put another 116,000
on it with nothing more than normal maintainence, brakes, hoses, oil, tune ups, etc. Still runs like a top, starts everyday, no matter how cold it is out.

Strength:

power-gate and doors, stereo controls on the steering wheel, personal climate controls.

Weakness:

rubber stripping around doors easily come off and in hot weather becomes gummy.

Being a family of 4 we may not have needed a mini-van but thats what we wanted. We purchases a Dodge Grand Caravan ES. The best things about this van are the power sliding doors on both sides, with 2 toddlers opening the doors with the push of a button is great also the van has a power rear gate and stereo controls on the steering wheel. The personal climate control and power stick transmition are great too. Dodge put a lot of thought into the amenities offered in this vehicle and the smooth ride, easy handling and interior comfort make this the best investment that our family has made. I am in love with this ride.

Weakness:

after 80k miles, transmission

94 Dodge Caravan, one major problem under warranty with main seal, then after my 7 yrs was over, at 80,000 miles, the transmission went out. Everyone i know who has Caravans in and around 92 to 95 replace trans.
Overall this Van was great, nice ride and except for the tranmission no major problems that i had to pay for, at the time, 17k is was a good price and was great with the kids. I have sold mine but the 7th year I had to invest around 1700 buck in transmission and brakes, air value, still better that car payments and depr on new cars will be 2 to 3k the first year.

Strength:

-Engine Power
-Good Brakes (they just don't last long)
-Lots of room

Weakness:

-Very unreliable
-Terrible overall quality

I bought my '96 Dodge Grand Caravan ES used in '98. Extemely unreliable. Worse car I've ever owned. The wipers come on whenever
they feel like it, the door trim is falling off. I've replace the water pump, the starter, the brakes twice and the serpentine belt 4 times. Now
the "service engine soon" light is on. However, I can't have serviced too
soon, as the Dodge Dealer service is booked solid for a week.My wife refuses to even drive it any more because she's afraid it will leave her
stranded.Trade it in? Good luck.I can't give it away as a trade. Guess I'm
stuck with it until I find someone else as stupid as me to buy it from me.
As God is my witness, I will never own another Dodge/Chrysler product as
long as I live.

Strength:

Excellent room, Good power, Nice to drive (considering its a van). No squeaks or rattles even after 5 years

Weakness:

Brakes, Replaced with a set of after market roters and no problems since - cost $10 more that the OEM

Good family hauler. No real issues with the exception of the transmission. Had some shifting/shuttering issues and had to replace the solinoid pack. A $50 fix after being told by 4 transmission shops that they would have to replace transmission for $2K. This solinoid and using the wrong transmission fluid account for 90% of Caravan transmission problems.

Strength:

The interior is smartly laid out and has some very handy designs, such as the ease of removal of the passenger seats, storage compartments, etc.

Weakness:

Engine and brake reliability

I rate the Dodge Caravan as unreliable. I purchased our Caravan brand new from our local dealership. Before the van had 15,000 miles, the serpentine belt had to be replaced. By 25,000 miles, it had to be replaced again. The second time, I was promised by the service manager that the root cause of the problem had been corrected. At 43,000 miles, the belt had to be replaced. This time, the van is out of waranty. Although it was a pre-existing problem, the service department refuses to accept responsibility. They keep telling me that the 2001 models don't have this problem and that this problem is common among the previously manufactured Chrsyler vans. Then the brake problem reared it's ugly head. I plan to unload the van as soon as the repairs are made. I wish I had reviewed this web sight before I purchased the van.

Strength:

Ok if you have 4 kids.

Weakness:

Everything

I had this van for 2 weeks beacause I had a hit&run on my
saturn LS1 and had to replace the bumber. My experience with the caravan had not been to good. Very loud on highway, fuel consumation is huge, engine doesn't respond when pressing gaz. No power at all. No style at all. I was so happy to return this car when my Saturn was ready. I am very happy that I didn't buy a Caravan...ouf...
Who should buy this: family with at least 3 kids otherwise...DON'T....I didn't have the chance to try other brand, but i'm sure that Japaneeses have better products to offer...

Strength:

Comfortable seats, we sprung for the built-in child seats and those were worth every penny.

Weakness:

All 4 tires had to be replaced at 15,000 miles. Frozen calipars at 15,000 miles replaced under warranty. Blown head gasket at 30,000 miles. Leaking
rear main seal at 30,000 miles. Squeeling brakes checked repeatedly by dealer and they claim could find no problem. Passenger side sliding door had to be re-alligned and re-set at 20,000 miles. Also, this was a 4 cylinder van and when it was full of stuff it had no power at all.

See above for mechanical problems. Van was 1 month or so away from running out of warranty, so we decided to replace it. With all the mechanical problems we were afraid to own it past the warranty. We purchased the Honda Odyssey because of it's high reliability rating. I had never owned American car prior to the Dodge caravan, never will do it again. My 1990 Mazda 323 had 160,000 miles on it without a single major repair. My 1988 Subaru Justy went 120,000 miles without a single major repair. Dodge has been a major disappointment. Another big disappointment was resale value of the caravan. The market is saturated with them and apparently word has gotten out among car dealers that this car is a mechanical dog. Trade in values were very low. If you buy a dodge caravan my advice is to get the 100,000 mile warranty you'll need it! It will help when you try to sell the van also if it's transferrable!

It's a piece of junk. We're on our fourth transmission job in 2 years.

We will NEVER buy another Chrysler car. Be sure to go to a search engne and type in "95 Dodge Caravan transmission problems". There's a lot of people having the same problem. Seems like there should be a call back to modify this transmission. STAY AWAY FROM THESE VEHICLES!
