Strength:

This is my second new Grand Voyager and my experience has been EXCELLENT! Drove the first one (a 1987, 3.0L) for 4 years and 178,000km (111,000 miles). Total repairs beyond normal maintenance (brakes, 1 muffler, tires) $25.00 in 4 years.
My current one (1991) has 339,459Km (212,000 miles) and runs like a charm. 25 - 26 mpg/hiway @ 70 mph, 20 - 21/city. AC runs like new and has never been serviced. Same with transmission (serviced once @ 120.000 miles)& engine. Only repairs have been brake pads, 2 mufflers, 2 radiators, 1 water pump, 1 starter, tie rod ends (once), front calipers and 2 batteries. I consider the above "normal maintenance" for a car of that age and mileage. Oh, I had to replace engine mounts and the serpentine belt & tensor @ 150,000 miles. Everything else is original and wonderful. Seats are more comfortable than in my Mercedez-Benz (sorry Mr. Daimler) for long trips. It pulled a 2500lbs boat from Toronto to San Diego and Back with no difficulty. All seven passengers are comfortable. My camping, scuba diving, skiing and fishing gear all fit nicely. I went off-roading last week with a full load and a canoe on top on pretty rough trails... no problem. This is the BEST car I ever had (sorry again Mr Daimler). I love my Chrysler minivan!

Weakness:

Too bad the driver's side air vent was discontinued between 1987 and 1991. The front lights are pathetic and I had to add good driving lights. Would like lighter seats, but I doubt my passengers would get the same excellent comfort. Really, I have no other complaints.

Paid about $23,000 CDN in Ontario. The above says it all: I recommend this vehicle with enthusiasm.

Strength:

Looks good; sporty appearance

Weakness:

It's poorly made of low bid parts. So far I replaced driver mirror, inside mirror, battery, horn, starter switch, steering column (twice), dash (had a bubble develop), and more. Michelin tires are severly weather cracked (at 20,000) miles, fuel door cracked off and cost $65 ( I must have it painted and install it myself). Transmission slips once in a while; only have 29,000 miles. Clearly a cheap (not inexpensive) design by Chrysler; basically all plastic throughout. I could go on but you get the picture...

Paid $28,000; you get style, not substance. Wouldn't do Dodge again; it lacks the quality of years ago.

Model Reviewed: Caravan, 91 Voyager

Strength:

Low maintenance, operating costs. Very flexible configurations. Far more room than I ever expected. Love the 3.3 engine in the '93 Caravan.

Weakness:

'93- headlights aren't as bright as they should be; lack of driver's side vent; the seats should ALWAYS have been on rollers. '91- the 4 cyl doesn't get much better gas mileage than the 3.3 engine in my '93, but has far less guts. The A/C has burned out a relay twice this summer. Both are harder to maneuver than my full-sized Broncos.

I bought both used, but got a far better deal on the '91 Voyager because it was a base model. Power windows and rear hatch opener on the '93 Caravan are great. These are the best vehicles I've ever travelled in for vacation. Mileage is good, A/C kept us comfortable, and we packed an AMAZING amount of gear inside, besides. The price is right, compared to a car, and the comfort and flexibility is unsurpassed. I love my Broncos, but I couldn't pack half the stuff I fit in my minivans. I wish these things didn't have a "soccer mom" association but I can tell you, the soccer moms knew a good thing when they saw one!

Strength:

double doors, style compared to other vans

Weakness:

engine, sqeaky doors, radio that died, bumpers that shed paint, obd system with that stupid check engine light.

can,t say i would recommend this, but it is so versatile, it spend stoo much time in the shop & the repairs are not cheap. the car seems to develope faults right after the 3year warranty. one month after that expired, the radio died ($350), clock spring on the steering wheel ($350),timing belt broke($400 with tow, new pulley, water pump). will be trading weekend. hurray!!

Strength:

Good for home improvement project and hauling kids around.

Weakness:

Almost everything. Road noise, door weather seals, dark plastic head lamps, lots of recalls, sliding door won't shut. Water pump, bypass coolant hose bursted, speedometer sensor, overheat, poor A/C, struts, main belt, paint peeled, leaking oil, starter and other minors.

Paid $19,500. Do not recommend it to new buyers. I kept an excellent maintenace on this vehicle since brand new but I still have had problems too often, Luckily, I fixed all of the problems myself and saved lots of $$ except recalls which are free. Not reliable and not comfortable for long drive. Transmission seems to be OK so far at 122K. May be because I have been driving it very gently for 9 years. It has helped me with lots of hauling but I still wish I had a different car.

Strength:

We purchased the Grand Caravan new, tenth year anniversary edition with all the bells and whistles. It's size is good for a family, good engine (the larger) and it's a good conversation starter - sharing transmission stories etc etc etc etc; Chrysler was good in giving us partial compensation for one transmission and another was covered under warranty - was still off-putting to be stranded with a family of five for one week fifteen hundred miles from home after a hair raising trip. Another strength is that transmissions are readily available and many Chrysler mechanics have had experience putting them in.

Weakness:

the fact that it is highly unreliable and we are afraid to take long family trips in it for fear of losing transmission # four or five (or seals etc) and experiencing considerable discomfort and dangers of driving with flaky transmission; we were also somewhat disappointed with a number of relatively minor things (by comparison) i.e. we replaced the air conditioning compressor; other problems included (I can not remember all of them) radio and cassette deck malfuctioning (could not turn radio off) molding coming off, plastic interior molding cracking, door handle (trunk) fell off, seatbelt bolt (upper) fell off etc etc there were many other minor and some relatively major repairs but they are blocked from memory. We now have the transmission checked (test drive) before any trip and we check the tranny oil for signs of filings etc

I considered selling the van but do not know how to do so in good conscience. Also, it has depreciated so much that it is almost worthless. I would consider a Toyota or Honda product if I had the cash. We once owned a Chrylser Lebaron (Mitsubishi engine) and it was such a loser that we had to almost give the car away -the aluminum engine was a loser- so based on our experiences, I could never buy another Chrysler product. A sympathy card should have come with the owner's manual.
zero stars

Strength:

Styling is nice. It is roomy. Good gas mileage.

Weakness:

Transmission just went out at 72,000 miles, despite proper maintenance an easy driving style. Engine seals had to be replaced at 60,000 miles. Belt tensioner needs to be replaced every time serpentine belt is replaced. These all seem to be common Chrysler problems. I notice the people who hav reviewed Caravans and like them seem to all be recent owners. My advice is to sell your Caravan before it has 50,000 miles on it.

If you put low miles on your vehicle, this would probably be an ok buy. My experience with Chrysler tells me that after you have over 50k-60k miles on it, your repair costs will be far beyond routine maintenance. Chrysler says they have fixed their minivan transmission problems. A cursory glance at all the web sites complaining about these problems would indicate that this is not so. I don't have the statistics, but I believe that premature failure of the drive train is more likely in these minivans than with other makes.

Drove more like a car than a van. Double doors were nice.

Weakness:

Phantom wipers, kind of annoying. Tranny was about ready to go. clunking sound in the front. brakes wear out rather quickly. To many recalls.

We traded this in for an Astro, which the jury is still out on that. It seems quality wasn't an important factor. I was really disappointed in this van overall. I probably wouldn't recommend this van.

350 miles after we purchased the vehicle the transmission started going out. The radio quit at 1000 miles. What next?!? I won't buy another one of these things that's for sure.

Purchased this vehicle for reliability because it only had 48,000 miles on it. Guess i'll check here first next time.
