Dodge Grand Caravan
Strength:
Best ride and most room and comfort of any other van, period! Drives like a quality car. Attractive and practical styling.
Weakness:
Transmission is has chronic problems. Replaced at 67K, and now bad again at 86K miles. Belt tensioner broke, radiator started leaking at the bottom seam, and other multiple and sundrie problems with electronically controled parts. Interior trim and straps pop loose. This is the most comfortable, smoothest driving piece of junk I've ever owned. In fact, it's the first car (out of about 15) that I wish I'd never purchased. Reliability just drops off the bottom of the graph by comparison with my previous Fords, GMs, Japanese cars, and even older Chrysler cars. Chrysler is proud of their heritage, but that's all they have to be proud of. The gap between their glory years and the return of quality just broadens and broadens. THIS IS MY SUPPOSITION: CHRYSLER SPENDS FAR MORE ON LATEST DESIGN AND SLICK MARKETING THAN THEY DO QUALITY, AND THAT'S THE ONLY THING THAT KEEPS THEM GOING! And their dealers and service departments take a shoulder-shrug attitude about it all. Similar Products Used: This is our first mini-van. |

See review about 2 mos. ago. Not many, comfortable seats that's about it.
Weakness:
All tires replaced due to leaking air at 15,000 miles. Frozen calipers at 20,000 miles. Blown headgasket and leaking rear main seal at 28,000 miles. I wrote a review about a month or two ago. I check back periodically to see reviews. I wanted to update my review with this interesting bit of info. I ran into the person to whom I sold my 1998 Caravan. They had taken the vehicle to the dealer for service and the dealer noticed that they were not the original owners. The vehicle was still under the 35 thousand or 3 year warranty whichever comes first, but was just a few days from going out of warranty. The dealer TOLD these people that they should buy the extended warranty NOW because the transmissions on these Caravans "are really terrible" and when the transmission "goes in a few thousand miles or so" it will cost you around $1500 to replace. It's really amazing that people who work for Chrysler KNOW how crappy their product is. Similar Products Used: Honda Odyssey, no comparison. |

If you want to kill your family....get one. For no apparent reason, the van would accelerate into passing gear while on the highway. Applying the brakes would not stop this pig. The only way to get it to stop was to turn off the key. Dealer could not duplicate the problem nor would they replace the computer or cruise control components. The dealer did nothing but told us we could come pick it up. Luckily, we refused the vehicle and my wifes company had their fleet service issue a replacement. Another damn Dodge. You are not going to believe this, but see my next post. I would not put my worst enemy in a Chrysler product, much less my family. Similar Products Used: Owned a Ford Aerostar which was a poorly designed van on a pick-up chasis. Then bought a Ford Windstar. By far the best mini van we have driven or owned |

Strength:
Family sized minivan. Great for vacation trips and a family of 3 children.
Weakness:
Transmission is a piece of junk. 1 new replacement at 30K and two rebuilds. Car doors are out of alignment now with stress cracks in body of car. Friends 1995 van has same problem. Seems that there should have been a safety strap to stop door from opening to far. Struts and shocks fail at just over 70K causing poor drive conditions around bends. Poor gas milage since I had van. 12 miles per gallon hwy. No answer to gas problem. Front breaks always going bad prematurely. Back window now leaks black glue, reason unknown, but leaves a big mess to clean up every time it gets warm outside. Headlights discolored showing age marks and in need of replacement. Reason also unknown. Unfortunately Dodge has lost a good customer. Major failures keep occuring. I have never encountered these type of problems on other cars i have owned, although they were not Crysler products! I wish thy had a web site that would acknowledge these types of problems and give recommended fixes for them. Am I all alone out here with a lemon or is everyone having the same problems? Similar Products Used: I have had a caravan before. Similar problems with that van as well. I should have learned my lesson the first time. I guess I bought it due to it being a good size choice for a family of 5. |

Mechanically, it's the worst vehicle I ever owned & very poor service from dealership. Have owned vehicle for 5 years. Have had no A/C for 2 years--over $1000 to fix. No radio for at least 2 years. Multiple problems with brakes, rotors and tires wearing unevenly. Motor in rear windshield wiper replaced--none of the above mentioned problems covered under warranty, of course! Hood release leaver popped off in my husbands hand--$50 to replace. And of course, the ever-popular transmission--has been done once, starting to have problems again--thuds when putting in reverse. Service personal were the rudest I have met in my life--wrote to the dealership owner even--no satisfactory response. Heater went out this winter--recently put another $500 in repairs. Went to a different dealership to see what they would give me in trade-in(mileage at the time 100,000 miles), after putting over $25,000 in this minivan (payments, interest & repairs) they told me the trade-in value was $1,500!! I will let it rot in the front yard first with a big lemon sign on it!! Definately not happy with this Dodge product. Similar Products Used: First minivan owned. Owned Chevy products before and will go back to them. |

Strength:
We test drove all the mini-vans out at the time we bought the Caravan. This by far was the best looking and most comfortable.
Weakness:
Where to begin.. When we picked our van up it had only 75 miles on it. And I'd say very soon after that the brakes began to shake the whole steering wheel when you would go to stop. We took it to the dealer twice and to an independent service center all before we had reached 20k. But no one could find anything wrong. We are now at 37k and just had to replace the brake shoes, rotors, and now the master cylinder two weeks later. All totalling over $500.00. I have never owned anything and had to replace so much so soon. The gas mileage is terrible. The tape player won't work on the mornings its to cold. The tint on the windows on one of the sliding doors is starting to streak.... I could go on but enough said. Over all experience very poor I'm sad to say I really wished it would have worked out differently. Reading all the other postings I will be trading it in next week before the transmission goes out to. Similar Products Used: Well if I could do it all over again However the Honda Odessey wasn't out when I bought this. That is what I would get. However, I'm all mini vanned out. |

Weakness:
well...i'll start with everything!!!!! Brakes have been replaced about 10 times in 5 years or less(NOT FOR TOWING ANYTHING)the traction is horrible, the back slides, the paint pealed after 1 1/2 years, it gets stuck going up hills in the winter, it's looks it's the ugliest thing I've Ever seen the gas could be better, the radio has poor sound, wind noise, it bounces and any other thing you can name about a car. I don't recomed one at all!!!!!!!! If you need the seating get a 2002 Explorer XLT (has a third seat) it holds up to 8 people!!!!!!! Similar Products Used: 1998 tuares wagon SE, I love it it a hole lot better than a van, but SUV's are the best!!!!! |

Strength:
Very Roomy Vehicle. Has a very comfortable drive and Ride when not having issues with brakes and transmission.
Weakness:
Transmission... It appears like myself many other owners of the Caravan have experienced very similar issues. I am on my third transmission with just over 41000 kms ( just over 26,000 miles ) In each situation the differential pin has broken off inside the housing of the transmission and literally burst out through the transmission casing. The dealership has certainly replaced the transmission however, I am concerned now as a safety issue of the vehicle as driving at hight speeds on the highway with no warning, the vehicle stalls and decelerates very rapidly as soon as casing breaks. Should anothe vehicle be tailgating us, I'm confident a rear end will occur. Would love to hear from others with same issues. My rating comes as a result of a comfortable drive but a major disappointment in the Caravan and Daimler Chrysler in them taking responsibility for a transmission they have been struggling with for years. I'd love to see action taken some how. Do the stats on just this site allow - 173 reviews and how many with tranmission issues???>>>>>>>...A LARGE percentage... far beyond an acceptable figure.
