Dodge Grand Caravan
Strength:
It has been very reliable and has very good cargo and passenger space. I have 75,000 miles on it and it still looks great and runs very well. The maintenance has been pretty cheap compared to other cars I've owned. Alignment never needs shims like my sporty german car did, and tires were cheap unlike my former SUV.
Weakness:
There are lots of little workmanship and design bugs. There is a spot where the paint wears off of the sliding doors, the rubber molding around the windshield was coming off, but was easily glued back in for free by a windshield repair place. Removal of the seats is technically easy, but the seats are quite heavy for one guy to lift out. We have really enjoyed having this reliable, comfortable, utile minivan. The costs of maintenance have been relatively low. Similar Products Used: Much easier to get in and out with cargo and kids than my old SUV and has a very comfy driving position. |

good amount of room, audio and visual sensor when fuel is low, power outlet in rear of van to hook up portable c.d. player for example, rides very smoothly, and turns nicley. a lot of storage compartments and cup holders.
Weakness:
power steering went out on us 2 weeks after purchase. The wife shut off the vehicle to fuel it up at a gas station, and when she started it back up, no power steering. brakes on rear passenger side were dragging a week after purchase. i have a 2 mo. warranty on vehicle, so both problems were fixed immeidately. i will be taking van in next week for windshield wipers. they like to turn on by themselves, or when set on delay, they like to run their own setting(i.e. going 4 times then waiting a minute, then run another two times...). i am very wary of this van now that i have read other peoples reviews.we havent owned this vehicle long enough to make a really good judgement on this vehicle. i wish i had looked this site up before we had purchased this van. i am afraid of future problems, and repairs down the road. Chronic air condition problems with the evaporator. Also chronic problems with the coil pack. Chrysler knows they have these problems and they are not willing to correct them. They have an admendment on the warranty for some of the vehicles, that have the same problems. But the will not do the same for this vehicle. This is the worst experience I have had with a vehicle. This is the second Chrysler Mini Van I have owned. The second on that has had airconditioner problems. With both of them the evaporator has gone out. I will never purchase anothe Chrysler product again. Similar Products Used: None |

Very functional car. Easy to handle. Drove 44,000 with absolutely no problems.
Weakness:
tensioner Took car in for service and the mechanic reported that the tensioner needed to be replaced. Upon further questioning, the mechanic confessed that this part has been a problem on this car for approximately 10 years. Why has Dodge not improved the reliability of this part? The mechanic also reported that he had the same car and thought it was a very good value despite this flaw. I had to agree but there is always room for improvement. How about it Dodge? No comment (previously stated in my 1/22/01 review) I just thought that I would update anyone that is interested. As I stated in my 1/22/01 review I filed for arbitration ("Lemon Law") to have my Caravan bought back by Chrysler. Well the good news is "Chrysler has agreed to buy my vehicle back for the full purchase price" (minus a reasonable amount for use of the vehicle).!! I have received this agreement in writing and I quickly signed it and faxed it back to the National Center for Dispute Settlements to start the check settlement process !! If all goes well I will turn the van in this week and receive my check. My nightmare coming to a end !!! A quick review "I notified Chrysler about the problems, then I notified the National Center for Dispute Settlement and applied for arbitration." "I was notified as to when and where the arbitration hearing was going to be held. I received a call from the District Manager who proceeded to settle with me.!! (Now I need to stress the fact that this is a summary and it was a couple month process to get this far.) Be persistent are my words of wisdom, because if you have a good case they will buy it back. I can't tell you how relieved we are to finally see a ending to this nightmare. If anyone out there is getting the run around with thier vans, you need to check out the "Lemon Laws" for you state and go that route. It sure beats trading the vehicle in and losing 3 to 5 thousand dollars because you are upside down. Anyway I though I could spread some good news amount those of us who have had to suffer through this. Good Luck to all !!!!! Similar Products Used: n/a |

Definetly the transmission...Weak engine for its size (3.3L) I got the Dodge Grand Caravan SE model...Guess what, a month later after the warranty expired the transmission failed...more than 700$ canadian to fix it at the dealer...The service people are pretty much aware of the fact that the Chrysler van carry a bad transmission...Actually the service guy, when we went to see him a few month before to sevice the brakes and air condition, was hard pressed to sell us the extended warranty... Similar Products Used: Dodge Grand Caravan 94: 98 improved in ride quality, better looks...but did not improve in transmission reliability...even my 94 had problems but at least it was covered under warranty and i traded in for a new one, once it's warranty was about to expiry. |

Transmission, ABS Brakes, Front-end Suspension Clunk. Our daughters van currently has 11,000 miles on it. The work orders have been open for 42 days since January 3rd and all of the problems still exist. Now she isn't driving this vehicle because the brakes "locked up" and failed to work at a stop sign. The dealer states "nothing is wrong." But she won't put her family at risk any longer! Please see her Similar Products Used: None |

Everything!!!! Transmission, Air Conditioning, Power windows, Rear Wiper, Power Windows and More I believe Dodge keeps making this vehicle to keep all there service people in business!!! Imade an apointment today to have my power window fixed it only goes 1/2 way up. when arived there was already 5 dodge vans in the shop being worked on. 1 1/2 hours later the service person came out with 2 lists of all these things wrong with the van. Needless to say I was pissed off!! I brought it there for my window not anything else!!!! And by the way they wanted 400.00 to just fix the track the motor was still good but they claimed both had to be replaced! GO FIGURE!!! Also, had my Transmissin totally replaced. Thank the good Lord that I paid for an extended Warranty. My Rear Motor went out on the windshield Wiper in the back, They said oh we will fix this it is covered under your warrranty. When I returned 2 days later to pick up the car they said The rear Wiper Motor was NOT COVERED and that will be 700.00 for parts and Labor! I laughed and told them to take it out of my car! I Was PISSED OFF then too! Similar Products Used: None |

Roomy, and comfortable.
Weakness:
Tansmission has had to have warranty work done already. Now it is downshifting very hard and will need more repairs. Rack and pinion is going out in it and it will need warranty work also. Stops hard. I feel it is important to mention the fact that the van has less than 18,000 miles on it. I have had several Dodge products, and have now decided NO MORE !!! This is the worst vehicle I have ever had, and I owned a pinto....I had an intrepid that I lost my but on , and thought a van maybe different, but I should have known better. After seven months of driving the Dodge Grand Caravan I have decided that I will never buy another Dodge,Crysler, or Plymouth product. I am sure I will once again take a hugh loss when I go to dump my Grand piece of crap. If I had bought this at Kmart or Target, I would have already taken it back for a full refund for being defective. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Great reliability, good cargo room, very good in the snow, does not seem to rust.
Weakness:
radio went out,a/c condensor had to be replaced,(although this occured at 180,000 miles so I'm not really calling that a weakness.) I have read many reviews that refer to transmission problems, the key to solving this problem is to get a caravan with the THREE SPEED auto. This transmision is very reliable, the 4 speed electronic tranny is junk! Chrysler uses versions of the four speed in many of it"s cars and it fails often in those also. Buy a caravan with the 3.0 V6 and three speed auto and drive it until you get sick of looking at it. Mine has 200,000 miles on it and still runs great. Similar Products Used: None |
