Safari
Strength:
Size, power, capacity to transport people comfortably with luggage and sporting equipment stored safely.
Weakness:
Mechanical and electrical failures. Front end noises and alignment problems. Odd sized tires only manufactured by Good Year that are inadequate for the load. We bought our Safari new in 1998 for its size, stying and ability to accommodate our needs after owning a 1991. We have taken it on a few road trips; however it has had several problems as follows: 1. Rear heater repaired three times; it still does not work in the high setting; sometimes works in the lower. 2. Leak in the Dutch doors repaired twice; water still gets in and collects in the storage bin to the right of the rear seat. 3. Banging noise in the front passenger door "fixed" twice to no avail. 4. Rear axle replaced – apparently twice while at the dealership for ten days; the rear end does not make the sounds that were symptomatic of requiring a replacement, but has developed other noises. 5. Passenger window developed motor problems and was replaced. 6. The air conditioning ceased and required service. 7. At approximately 24,000 miles the Safari needed new tires. Though the van had been registered by the dealership as a light truck, it was delivered with Goodyear Eagle GA passenger tires, which are rated by Goodyear for touring sedans (refer to Goodyear literature and the Goodyear website for evidence of this) and not the weight and size of the Safari or any light truck. Initially, the dealership and Goodyear took no responsibility for the inappropriate selection of the tires. Eventually Goodyear made good on the tires with a pro-rated deal on a set of new Goodyear Wranglers (designed for light trucks). During the process of replacing the tires, more than one Goodyear representative stated off the record that the Safari should not be equipped with the Eagle GA tires. New GMC Safaris, now bearing the words “GMC Truck” on the rear, are equipped with the same Goodyear Eagle GA passenger tires. This seems an issue of semantics, until it's time to replace the tires. We are on our third set and cannot find a replacement that adequately fits the Safari because of the heavy duty FE2 suspension. |

Strength:
Roomy and confortable
Weakness:
Leaked antifreeze - fixed after 9 attempts., alternator has gone out twice, all rear seat belts had to be replaced. Power seats quit working, etc... We have had this van in for service 19 times, in just 2 years! We started having problems as soon as we got it home. We were told the Lemon Law does not apply because it is a conversion van. We bought this van in hopes of traveling with our children, it took 2 years for us to feel confident enough to finally take a trip, our drive home from Fl to OH was a nightmare, we had to call a tow truck 2 times, the 2nd time we waited 2 hours on the side of I-75 in 100 degree heat, we just barely made it home. |

Strength:
This baby would tow your house down the road! Lots of room, good gas milage for it's size
Weakness:
Windwiper motors are crap! Don't fool around replace it if it stops. $90.00 easy do it your self job. Poorly egineered front end compoents. Toys break down relatively quick This Safari has been a reasonable vehicle, although it does have a few nagging problems. After hearing of the problems later models have had I might not buy a new one Similar Products Used: For Aerostar |

GMC Safari AWD
Strength:
Lots of room and nice ride..
Weakness:
Suspension, drivetrain, and electrical system/controls. Seven passenger AWD is nice in the midwest winters. Room for kids and all their stuff. Bought new. Transfer case shelled out just out of warranty. Transmission blew out fluid, grinding to a stop on the interstate in the middle of nowhere, never used for towing. Air conditioner started blowing outcold air when and where it wanted to. The controls were replaced(several hundred dollars)and started up again with in weeks. Driver's side power window goes down but not up. The thing has front suspension problems, idler arms are worthless after a few thousand miles. Front torsion bar suspension just shot craps..another $500+ to fix. Wears out the outer edge of tires faster than kids go through a box of cereal.Windshield wipers have a mind of there own, work when not needed but when it rains..forget it. Dealers shrug and say they can't figure it out. Maintance is done per the manufacture's schedule.Intermitent starting problem. Dealer replace a next to new battery and said it was a charging problem. Still wouldn't start so the entire fuel delivery system was replaced at another $600.00. Check engine light says on all the time, another shrug of the shoulders. Strength:
It pulls our boat with people in the van extremely well. Holds a ton of stuff! It's amazing how much we can pack in this van and still have tons of room.
Weakness:
I haven't had any problems with my van at all. I love my GMC Safari! I have 3 kids, twins plus one. I went from GMC car to the Safari. I hated all the vans around. Then my husband showed me this one. It has 8 seat belts and holds lots of people. The best part is that I can turn the first bench seat around and lock it down. (I lose 2 seat belts though). But my kids face each other and I can put my tv between the seat and they love it!! They are all in seat belts and I don't hear the tv or even them! They love it! I have even sold two more to friends and I don't even sale cars. They just liked everything about mine and bought on too. |

Nice and Roomy Van, Looks good, stand above the other vans in it''s class!!!
Weakness:
S U C K Y ! ! ! Hello there, it me asain, anishnabedaddy. I''ve got some news about my van again. Well first thing is that when my oxygen sensors were needing to be changed, this van drank a lot of that expensive gasoline!! I''ve got a 90 litre tank and it would drink that in about three days... Well I''ve changed that, and it''s O.K. now. We''ve put a lot of money into this machine, and I''ve owned a few vehicles, and this one is the newest one we''ve owned, So I thought that I would be spending less money on Maintenence and more on the toys. But no, I''ve got that all wrong. So we were talking about trading it for a different vehicle, and I swear that this Machine heard us. So it ran good for a while, so we decided to keep it. I think we spoiled it oo much with the synthetic oils, gas treatment, engine treatments, and all the other goodies, that we left that good stuff out for a while, and this maching got SUCKY... the heater worked only when it wanted to, the passenger door window opens/closes when it wants to, and when I''m at the light waiting for the green, it shakes in convulsions and when I go for the pass, it blows out black smoke. So I unhitched one of the O2 sensors and it''s O.K for now, now I''ve got to fork out another $180.00 again. |

Strength:
Spacious, handles well. Good sound system.
Weakness:
Brakes wear out too soon and squeak loudly. Transmission went out at about 65,000 miles, air-conditioners (front and back) burned out. (I actually had smoke coming into the van from this)! Driver''s side window completely stopped working at approx. 30,000 miles, drawer under front passenger seat will not stay latched and whacks the passenger in the back of the legs at every stop, windshield wipers are non-functional, driver''s side seat will not lay back (stripped gears). Air bag light is on constantly--although I was told that air bag is OK., dutch door would not open at all--had to have it repaired. Alternator and battery went bad during the first year I owned the vehicle. Fan belt tensioner dropped out of vehicle onto road. Transmission will not go into PARK position. I cannot park on any type of hill without a curb because the van will roll backwards. All electric locks would not work--had them repaired. Hood latch does not work--I have to pry it up with a screw-driver. Fan switch works only on HIGH setting--(good thing since the air conditioners are broken). Gas gauge was wrong--I ran out of gas when the gauge read 1/4 tank on the 3rd day that I owned the van. Power steering e Nightmare City!!! Similar Products Used: None |

size,towing ability,awd feature,seating comfort,capacity,layout of dash
Weakness:
This van seems to wear brakes & front end parts out fast, the handling is sluggish,truck-like, but thats one of the sacrifices. rear seat is a "work-out" to remove, cup holders are useless, lack of storage areas up front,no "smart system" to shut down lights left on. Offers a lot for the money in terms of size, power, amenties, We knew we were giving up; handling, gas milage and agility in exchange for towing ability, awd, power&leather seating& dual A/c & heat. We think it was a good trade for us. on overall rating I would consider it good but in 2002 there is more to compete with this vehicle than in 1998 so Cant really say I''d buy it again.... GMC SAFARI GT
Strength:
Lots of power, very roomy, comfortable and sits nicely on the road..I sometimes do renovations and this vehicle holds 4 x 8 sheets of plywood and gyproc perfectly. I have three kids and we travel alot. One of the best things that I like with this van is that it is conventioonal drive.
Weakness:
The front end has a double idlearm design. Not impressed. It seems as though the front end is loose, but the Dealers claim that it is within GM specs. I was never a van lover, but after I rented a Chevy Astro to take a five hour trip to Toronto Canada, I was very impressed and fell in love with it. The vehicle was loaded and handeled nicely with 8 passengers, a small washing machine and lots of bags. I had the extended body. I promised to get one.....and I did, with the extended body. |
