GMC Safari Minivans | Wagons

GMC Safari Minivans | Wagons

DESCRIPTION

(1985 - 2005) Sharing the Chevy Astro's platform was its sibling, the GMC Safari. In addition to standard passenger uses, the vans were also available as cargo vans, and converters used them as the basis for small conversion vans. The Safari is powered by a 4.3-liter, 160-hp V6 with a 4-speed automatic. This van sits up to 8 passengers and ABS is standard.

Seats 7, Strong Engine, 2nd row captains chairs great so kids can''t reach each other!

Weakness:

transmission gone again, 2nd time! p/w driver side sticks in down position, a/c decides to randomly stop blowing out vents but still blows - somewhere. heat doesn''t blow on driver side. dutch door arms won''t hold up anymore, 1/2 dash lights out on speedometer. fuel smell inside van after fill up. exhaust smell when cranked to warm on cold mornings. mushy suspension. black paint on doors peeling. rear bumper sags even after tightening.

Big Mistake!! Bought used in ''99. Didn''t do much research. Only asked 2 opinions. If you are reading this before buying, good for you!!!

Strength:

Great for people that have children, with lots of friends. Great visibility. I would defintely reccomend this van.

Weakness:

Brakes aren''t the best.At 90,000 miles, I have had to replace alot of parts. Valve job, heads, egr system, fuel injection pump, and the passenger side electric window gets stuck in down position some times. Cheap handles, they will break if the doors are locked and you pull on them, and also the side sliding door is off track.

4.3 motor,electric everything,7 passenger

Similar Products Used:

previously owned: 1985 and 1988, which i believe actually ran better than this one, mostly because this one has more electrical features.

Strength:

Plenty of power, room and convieniences such as cup holders and power connections

Weakness:

It is almost impossible to keep tires more than 30,000 miles. Unable to get an accurate front end allignment. Dealer stated that the front end alignment components were most likely damaged during the delivery of the van by truck. Transmission problem when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. Power window motor went out in the down position inthe middle of the summer in hot Texas 100 degree heat.

Generally it is a great vehichle. Ample room for a family of four. Is great for long trips. It is also very high up which is great or viewing the open road.

Strength:

This van has a lot of room, especially if you take the benches out. The first time I bought this van, I took it for a trip around the province and me and my family loved it. I had put in a 13" tv/vcr and the kids love that, now no bickering, they even have their video games hitched up to it.(thank got it has earphone jacks!) It has a lot of power. Excellent view, Great sound system, but I still put in my Woofers. Rear hatch and dutch doors are superb.

Weakness:

Well now, I had to get my torque converter changed, because it jolted into second gear, O2 sensors needed to be changed, winshield got a crack from the cold, weak leaf springs and shocks, had to replace them, rear axle seals and bearings had to be changed, U-joints,

I''ve always wanted a van like this, it''s great. It can be customized very easily, also has a lot of room and a lot of POWER. This is your best choice for a Family van because it can Tow, Haul up to 8 passengers, had roof racks rear storade for luggage, and still has power to spare.

Strength:

Engine provides lots of towing power and ample interior room for family.

Weakness:

Rear door seals leak, rear door latch sticks, paint peeling off roof which GM will not fix, drivers side power window switch broke, weak stock shocks, accessibility to engine for backyard mechanic, gas consumption.

Great Van. Lots of room for the family and loads of highway power. I like the fact that the van sits high giving great views. Van can take lots of punishment.

Powerful engine although I have never towed with it.

Weakness:

Power window motor (driver side) has been replaced. Sliding door actuator has been replaced. Side view mirror (passenger side) motor has been replaced.Fuel gage sensor located in gas tank has been replaced. Rubber strip around driver side door has been replaced.

I use the vehicle daily, has excellent power.Good visability and easy to drive. Long trips and vacations are a breeze with plenty of room to pack everything. Making it ideal for the family trips. Apart from a few electical component failures it is a great vehicle.

Strength:

Plenty of room. Easy to drive on long drives and still be restful. Plenty of leg room.

Weakness:

Engine too big for this type of van. It should require a 3.5 liter engine to be competitive with foregin vans.

Having Brake problems from the time we bought the van. There is electrical problems with the wipers when being used during the rain. They have a tendency to stop immediately with no warning. These situation can cause an accident on the interstate.

Strength:

190 hp 4.3 V-6, pulls realy nice! Acceleration is excellent for passing, geting on to freeway ramps. It has a rear air conditioner which is good for hot summers, and a rear heater which is also good for cold winters. has a trip computer which tells u how far you can go with the remainig fuel left, tempurature and compas, average speed, M.P.G.. There is alot of info that it tells you. Tow/Hual switch that gives you the best shift points when towing. Dutch doors are realy cool.

Weakness:

On a windy day you can hear the wind loud from the inside, you have to be careful and not press the gas just a pinch to much or it will switch down and roar.

Very nice van! Nice interior for a van. Looks like a Luxury SUV. It Pretty cheap compared to a 2000 Dodge Caravan, Honda Odessy, Ford windstar. It was about $10,000 cheaper! It is well worth my money. It has alot of power ive gotten it up to 119 MPH.

Strength:

Great for viewing (ask my grand-kids in their car seats), Great power for ascending the "Grapevine" or "Cahone Pass" or just a day in the mountains.

Weakness:

Excessive wind noise from an inferior weather stripping seal around the entire vehicle. You can actually see the ground from inside the van at the side door. The transmission "kicks down" when you are at highway speed and give it a little gas, causing it to slip into a lower gear and use up more fuel. There is no back-pressure when you are coming down a steep geade, causing you to rely on the brakes too much, even if you use a lower gear.

Have 52,000 miles on it already, only 1 trip to service to have the power door lock repaired. Bought it because I have a family of 8 and other mini vans don''t accomodate that many. Very good on power which compensates for the gas consumption (18.0 avg.on the Computer in the console)

Similar Products Used:

I previously owned a 1990 Astro Van,which I thought the world of, because it was much quieter and had a better transmission for decending steep mountain grades

Strength:

Strong engine, lots of room for passengers (seats 7-8), can tow lots of weight.

Weakness:

Poor gas mileage (typical for a large vehicle right?), electrical problems, have had to spend $1600 to repair transmission problems , who knows what is next!

This vehicle was great when we first bought it. Out of our other vehicles owned we have never had to put as much $ as we have in 2 years owning this vehicle.
