Model Reviewed: Pontiac Montana Ext 8 pass

Strength:

Awesome 8 passenger seating arrangement Great dash layout ( they copied honda accord here!)very quiet, cold A/C fuel econ when A/C off decent power very convenient overall

Weakness:

definetely not an oddysey! will trade in at 100,000 kms (60,000 mile) afraid of what will happen after that! lousy suspenson at low speeds over speed bumps etc, the van just pitches and bucks, literally throws you around. overall build quality typically GM. not a van too keep for a long time.

My family needed a van after the arrival of our third child. After owning several honda's, it was only natural to check the oddysey. While honda vans are undoubtedly the best,i couldn't justify the high price. new or used. So after looking at the big three and being a GM fan, we chose a slightly used (32,000kms 20,000 mile) 2001 montana ext 8 pass. i have to say that he seating arrangement works awesome. it is definetly the most versatile of any van out there. i can put my three kids in the middle row, remove the last row seats for camping or just flip and fold one or both. No other van can do this, all the others have a 2 pass second row arrangement. because of this i can oversee GM's lack of overall quality. this van feels like driving a 80's midsize domestic sedan. overall pleasant to drive on long hwy trips, decent fuel economy for its size, until you turn on the A/C! pulls my small boat without any problem (2000 lbs). its not real fun to drive but what do you expect from a van?

Strength:

Engine power, gas milage, seating, comfort, handling...

Weakness:

None so far. I have had many GM vehicles and never have had a problem with any of them. (Knock-on-wood) The only thing I am worried about is the power slider. I know a few Honda and Toyota owners, and they have had problems with their power sliders, so I guess no one makes a trouble free power slider.

Over a year ago we were looking for a new van. After reading all the reviews, we did not even want to look at the Montana. We looked at every Mini-van on the market (see below.) We looked at the Montana as a last resort. After driving it, we fell in love with it and the dealer was great to deal with. Others that we have talked to, with the Montana, have nothing bad to say about them. There are some good reviews on this site, but if people are satified with their purchase, they are less likely to write a review. People are more likely to talk about their problems. I hope this is the case with the Montana.

We looked at every van on the market. The Honda was too expensive and the sliding doors rattled on the test drive. The Toyota was nice, but not outstanding, and it was more than we wanted to spend. We

Model Reviewed: Pontiac Montana - short

Strength:

Good acceleration, and fuel economy (20 mpg in town) with the new 3.4 liter engine than our 1992 Pontiac Transport, although our old Transport had the 3.8 liter engine. Driver and passenger front and side air bags are standard equipment. Relatively comfortable standard interior. More plush than the Chevy Venture, about the same as the Oldsmobile.

Weakness:

Has an exhaust manifold leak that the dealer denies. They charged me $60 to tell me they can't find or hear a leak, but I think it's loud and obnoxious. I admit it doesn't affect the function of the van, it's just annoying. This van ia a little too small for a family with three kids. Better suited to a family with one or two kids. This van is not as stable as our old Tranport (because this van is lighter?) while driving on the highway in a strong crosswind.

Overall we are satisfied with our "new" van. It has more standard options than our old 1992 Pontiac Transport, but not so many that we'll be chasing our tails trying to fix everything that goes wrong. Because of that, I am thankful we have the short version with only standard equipment, no gadgets or gizmos. It is comfortable for seating 6, but 7 (it has seat belts for 7) would push the comfort limit. With our three kids and our overnight "gear", it's a squeeze to get everything in, but I feel it is a good thing because it will cause us to be more efficient packers and bring only the necessary stuff with us. I shopped intensively for one month before finding this van. For the price we paid, this van can't be beat.

Strength:

very good mileage.

Weakness:

transmission problem, squeeky front seat

Very disturbed with transmission going just after 43000 km./27000 miles while we were out of the province. Led to believe this was a rare occurence and believed this until yesterday after meeting someone who has had two transmissions replaced. Will talk to dealership and request new warrenty dated from transmission installation.

Strength:

Gas mileage, very comfortable seats, radio controls on steering wheel, not "boxy" looking, handles well and has very good pickup

Weakness:

The back windshield washer hasn't worked right since it was ripped off in a carwash.

I LOVE my van! It rides great, does very good on gas mileage and its comfortable. Its roomy - I very often have to take 5 or 6 kids out and its not difficult to get into the 3rd seat. I bought this used with just over 30,000 miles on it and have put close to 10,000 more on it. The only thing I have done is changed the oil. I also really like amount of room behind the seats for stuff like groceries and strollers. Also, I frequently ride in a Mazda Triumph SUV or Toyta 4 Runner. The ride in the Montana is far smoother. Of course now everyone wants to take the van instead of their cars! I bought this during the dealer's "big annual sale" so I got a very good price (I feel) and I am thrilled with the van.

Strength:

Good handling. It turns circles around the Windstar and Caravan. Good acceleration. Better gas milage than our other minivans. Live on dirt roads and the air filter is a plus. On Star is very reassuring to have on board.

Weakness:

Heater could be better. Live in northern US and it takes a long time to heat. Don''t know about the AC yet. Seats could be more comfortable, wish I would have gotten leather with heated seats. Have trouble seeing the radio/heater settings/rear wipers- shift control seems in the way.

So far so good, but I only have 7,000 miles. After reading the reviews I think I''ll take out the extended warrenty, though.

Strength:

It is so unwanted no one wants to steal it.

Weakness:

It will not go 3 weeks with out a trip back to the dealer for repairs. Completely unreliable.

I thought this van was a lemon. But after reading the other reviews, I believe their are inheriant problems with this product. I have had 4 fuel injectors replaced, at least 3 repairs on the sliding door, the A/C switch repaired 3 times, new A/c compressor, had to buy new tires at 30,000 miles (I did keep them rotated and serviced) I had to have the radio replaced. Countless other small things repaired.

Strength:

Cargo and passanger room.

Weakness:

Engine flaws; stiff ride; squishy brakes.

I bought this van used approximately one year ago. Shortly thereafter the problems started. The first major problem was coolant mixing with the oil. The remedy was to reseal the intake manifold ($425). Now the brakes are going bad after only 40,000 miles.

Weakness:

ON THE 2001, NONE, ON THE 1999 THE WIPERS USED TO GET STUCK IN AN UP POSITION (RELAY MOTOR)

EXCELLENT OVERALL. I''M VERY HAPPY WITH THOUGH I ADMIT IT''S ONLY BEEN 6 MONTHS AND 7000 MILES. WE PREVIOUSLY HAD A 1999 MONTANA THAT MY WIFE MANAGED TO TOTAL (PINNED THE ASS IN HIS EXPEDITION, HAD TO CUT HIM OUT). THE ''99 HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR RELAY, IT WAS FIXED TWICE JUST AFTER THE WARRANTY WAS UP, FIRST TIME IT COST ME $400, SECOND TIME THE DEALER PAID SINCE IT WAS ONLY A FEW MONTHS LATER. YOU CAN''T BEAT THESE THINGS FOR GAS MILEAGE, POWERTRAIN SMOOTHNESS, RIDE, HANDLING ETC

Nice ride with air shocks.

Weakness:

Needs second row arm rests on seats.

I bought this van for my wife to have dependable transportation. So far OK!!! The sliding door recalled twice and still makes that loud noice and isn''t fixed still. Tires very poor!!! Alternator went out twice. 28000 dollars for a van that you have to dial the seat back!
