Model Reviewed: Nissan Sentra

Strength:

Great gas mileage, good handling, decent trunk size. They seem to have a decent resale value as well. The turning radius is so small that you can make U-turns anywhere.

Weakness:

The car has a very low ground clearance and is constantly getting stuck in the snow. Just a few inches, and the car''s underside is dragging. Can''t deal with it in Michigan, especially on a back country road that doesn''t get plowed.

The Sentra is a great car in many respects. It''s fun to drive, handles well, and gets absolutely fantastic gas mileage (32-38 for a combo of city/hwy driving). It has required little besides the normal maintenance. I would love to buy another, but it''s lousy in the snow. The integrity of the interior is not great thought, lots of plastic parts breaking off, wind leaks in the windows, etc.

Similar Products Used:

I had a Ford Maverick (rust bucket) and an AMC Alliance. They were nowhere near the quality, reliability of the Sentra.

Model Reviewed: TS 2.2L sedan

Strength:

AWD? - Not sure how good the system is, because I haven't driven it in winter yet. Keep in mind that for this car the AWD systems are different for the auto and manual transmission. The auto comes with the differential slip between the front and rear drive train; Manual transmission does not.

Torque - It only get 140 lb-ft torque so its nothing eye popping. However, the torque comes quickly and relatively low RPM's so it's comfortable to drive.

Rack and Pinion steering - If you get over the fact that the steering wheel that feels like a kid's power wheel toy, you'll appreciate the steering.

Weakness:

Engine - 2.2L sounds a bit raspy at high RPM. No torque what so ever at higher RPM. New buyer have no problem with this: Subaru stoped making this engine. All newer Subaru at least have a 2.5L engine with 160hp.

Breakes - What was Subaru thinking? No anti-lock and worst yet, it's not 4 wheel disc breaks! Get the higher model if you can get a good deal.

Maintance - Holy sh*t! This thing cost an arm and a leg to maintain (at least up in Canada)! The dealership charges too much for an oil change and just for regular maintaince. Parts are very expensive; One of my headlights got cracked and it cost 300 bucks to replace it! A muffler and a new radio doesn't even cost that much! Most people say Subaru's are reliable, and I hope so. I could never afford to fix it.

Interior - Lets just say the interior is not bio-degradable (see overall).

I got the 4 door sedan model, with the 2.2 L engine (140 hp) so the engine isn't as powerful as the newer subarus, espically compared with the WRX. However, I never considered this car a sports car and the torque curve comes relatively quickly. That means I don't have to rev up the engine too high to get the power. However, try to get a good 0 to 60 time and you'll find that the torque curve quickly drops after 3500 RPM.

I think the interior is really cheap. I know most cars have plastic interiors, but damn, it feels so cheap.

The cluch travel is further than I would have liked, but its like most cars (except for the integra and celica which.) The shifter is a bit mushy; integras/celicas have shifters that shifts cleanly into each gear.

The worst part about this car is the maintance. It's so expensive. An oil change at the dealership costs like 30 cnd! As soon as the warrenty expires I'm going to change the oil myself.

Similar Products Used:

Acura Integra (140hp models) - accelerates faster, but torque doesn't come as soon. Noisier interior. I actually put down a down payment on one of these cars, but when I took it in for a mechanical inspection there were too many problems. Took the subaru instead.

Mercedes Benz 230 1999 Kompressor - Maintance is actually cheaper! Very stable and comfortable car with more power. More expensive though.

Pathfinder 1999.5 - A good SUV. I'm not sure if I can really compare the two vechicles. They're totally different.

1972 Old Beetle - My previous car before I got this. The Subaru beats it in every single deparment (I actually get heat and a working defroster!) and I MEAN EVERY single deparment. Well except for those strange looks from people when the see an Asian drive a yellow bug.

1998 New Beetle - Geesh, I was really tired of driving the old Bug and now you want me drive a newer one? Interior had lots and lots of room. No torque, and driving it was weird because the dashboard was like a meter long. Clutch felt like it was going to rip itself apart. 4 wheel disc breaks and larger tires make it a good deal.

porsche 944 - insurance says "Ya right! you're kidding right?"

Celica 2000 - Loved this car. Couldn't afford it.

Strength:

Looks - cops don't look twice.
Interior - nicely done and loads of room in the wagon.
brakes - the best i've used ever.
Motor - 227hp 4 cyclinder monster.....just wait until the Sti version gets here...

Weakness:

Rear seat small for 6 foot plus passengers.

i'm probably one of the fist owners of these vehicles in my area....
What can i say??? A grocery getter that hits 60mph in 5.4 seconds!!!
Launch is simple.....engage 1st gear, rev to 3500rpm with emergency brake on, bring clutch up to were you can feel the car shudder, then release handbrake and drop clutch at same time.....no wheelspin!!! You're pushed back in your seat and say goodbye to just about anything else on the street...rear wheel drive cars have no hope!!!!
Some turbo lag, and in corners, unless you're in the right gear will sometimes bog....
But on the whole a simply an amazing car

Model Reviewed: Impreza Outback Sport

Strength:

The car can wear many hats, from family wagon to commuter to sports car. On a recent trip from LA to Lake Tahoe, it performed admirably on the freeway, remaining very stable despite high winds. It has sharp looks that make it stand out from the crowd, and a great aftermarket following. The Impreza remains out of step with the rest of the auto world, yet never outclassed. A great buy for those who partake in sports (the rubberized cargo tray is standard, as is the roof rack) or just want something a little different. Those who favor an automatic should beware that the auto box removes much of the cars sporty nature. However the stick is a blast, the car begs to be thrown around.

Weakness:

Factory tires are woefully inadequate and transfer a lot of road noise. I would have liked to see the 2.5 motor available in this car, but we only get the 2.2. Having said that, by spending anywhere between $100 to $700 on aftermarket modifications, the 2.2l engine becomes just as powerful as the stock 2.5 motor. No driver vanity mirror.

For around $20,000 you can have a versatile AWD wagon equipped with decent sound system including CD, Air Con, electric windows and door mirrors, keyless entry etc. So far the car has been without fault and I highly recommend the product. One cautionary note, because the Outback Sport comes equipped with roof rack, this conspires with the AWD system to return between 23 to 28 mpg. My average is 24. On a final note, the dealer Timmons Subaru deserves a mention. The Sales Manager Tor Johnson lets the car sel itself and at no time was I pressured. On top of which he gave my wife and I a very fair price.

Similar Products Used:

The closest rival appears to be the Audi A4 Avante and the Ford Focus wagon. The Focus is not AWD, so a comparison is not really fair, though I drove both and the Ford was high on my list. Against the Audi, the Subaru remains a better value and more stiking option. but that is subjective as I find Audi styling bland and the cost to be excessive.

2.5 RS Coupe 5-Spd. Exceptional handling, smooth & responsive power, AWD traction, interior & exterior styling are impressive & unique. Exceptional braking ability, good availability of aftermarket parts, rarity, (2000 is last year for the coupe.) Outstanding value for the money.

Weakness:

Tires.

For just over $20,000 well equipped, there is not another car that would compare with it in styling, handling, overall performance, or "eye-appeal." Highly recommend!

Model Reviewed: Impreza L Wagon, 2.2 liter engine

Strength:

Handles very well -- I drive on wiggly, hilly roads and am usually in a hurry. It just grips the road, even in bad weather. It's lively and more fun to drive than my husband's Legacy Outback wagon (no surprise since that's a bigger car with the same engine). Also, in emergency stops it just sits down and digs in.
Maintenance costs are very low (<$400 in 2000), and the fuel economy is execellent.

Weakness:

Some loss of power when the AC is on (not often, here in the hills of NW New Jersey). Stylish streamlined back results in some loss of cargo space (especially compared to my old Toyota Tercel wagon, which was a box on wheels).

If you want a car that's fun to drive, easy to maintain, and hauls like a truck (I travel with a Rotteweiler in the back of mine), this is a great car. I have 85,000 miles on it and plan to get 200,000 -- unless it gets attacked by a deer. It's sucessor will definately be another one just like it.

Similar Products Used:

More fun to drive than my husband's '95 Outback wagon. Much more zest than my '92 Toyota Tercel 4x4 wagon. Hauls more than my '85 and '87 Civic hatchbacks. Lots more power than our '90 Subaru Justy (no surprise), and just as reliable.
