Volkswagen Eurovan (1992 - 2003) Minivans | Wagons

Volkswagen Eurovan (1992 - 2003) Minivans | Wagons

DESCRIPTION

In the USA, the short wheelbase Eurovan 5 cylinder passenger models (CL, GL, GLS, and MV) were only sold for model year 1993. VW only imported the Eurovan to the USA for one year (1993) because sales in the USA were disappointing, but sales continued in Canada and Mexico. VW reintroduced the Eurovan passenger models in the USA for model year 1999 with a VR6 engine as standard, and discontinued it again with worldwide T4s after 2003.

The Eurovan Camper by Winnebago was introduced in the USA in 1995 with the 5 cylinder engine, and was upgraded to the VR6 for the 1997-2003 models.

Strength:

LOTS of room!! We've managed to fit a queen size bed+frame in with room to spare (after removing all seats). -Much higher than other minivans (even new models) -Fantastic comfort on long trips and tough as nails - we were rear ended on a merge lane by a nissan pickup. Needless to say the front of the nissan was a mess, but the Eurovan sustained minor damage!! These vans are built very tough.. just count the number of roll bars in the frame! -Handling- 4-wheel independant suspsension is wonderful and you can feel it in the corners.

Weakness:

We opted for the 4-spd auto tranny. I've never been a fan of VW auto tranny's and this is no exception. It doesn't take advantage of the 109 horses available, and hurts the gas mileage. On the highway the revs are right up there at 110kph, where as the 5-speed manual is better ratioed. We had to replace the tranny around 210,000 but it cost quite a bit. -Typical VW eletrical problems, but this comes with age. -VW didn't release the 4WD version in North America like they did in Switzerland (the Caravelle) In truth, the van has done very very well. Highly Recommend one!!

When we bought ours in 1992 we had eagerly been awaiting production. We were promised in late 1990 that they were redesigning the beloved "Vanagon" so it was definately worth the wait! 269,000 Km's and going STRONG!

Strength:

The rear facing seats so that people can actually converse without looking at the back of someone's head, the fridge under one of the seats, the pop-top, table, cup holders, washable curtains, the warranty, and the visibility because the van is taller than my old minivan. And yes, it is easy to find in a parking lot!

Weakness:

No glove box, no side air bags, rear facing seats only have lap belts but I guess that's all that's needed...

My husband and I love our van, especially the camping part. Our children ages 4 & 7 love it, too. We're heading for Calif this summer for 2 weeks and actually looking forward to the drive. The warranty is better than past years..5 year/40,000 miles. It's fun to drive and I feel very safe in it.

Strength:

Van is easily found in a crowded parking lot, amid all the car-a-vans out there!! I get around 19 Miles Per (Imperial)Gallon in town, mid-twenties on the highway, depending on speed, wind and load. Note that I have the 2.5 liter transverse in-line 5 cylinder with the five speed manual transmission. There is a higher power output engine control chip available for this vehicle for about CAD500; that''s going in this summer, even though the van can cruise all day at 110 KPH (~70mph) without getting into a fuss. Passing does take some planning at those speeds though. I am the second owner and am showing about 205,000 kilometers (~128,000 miles) on the clock. At 174,000 kms when I bought it about 3.5 years ago (it''s now March/02), all five cylinders were within 2psi of each other and at the top of the recommended factory compression range. One tough engine!! NO electrical problems (save cruise control). Van comes equipped with power windows and door locks (operating driver''s, passenger''s, sliding side door and rear hatch). Handy do-dad, that.

Weakness:

Repairs that I have undertaken since purchase: new defroster blower (bearings were gone when I bought it). The AC really increases the labour costs! Rear heater fan bearings are pretty ''rumbly'', but I s/b able to nurse it along for another year or so (note that I live in a rather "cool" area). Seat heaters never did work for me, but then, they tend to "go south" in most cars I''ve ever seen after about 5 years or so anyway. Cruise control''s computer packed it in. It''s CAD700; for that price, I''ll use my throttle foot a little longer. Vehicle has #!$#*#$!! constant-on headlights, which are VERY dim at night, despite being "E" rated (European) quartz halide. Web research has outlined an inexpensive re-wiring ''fix'' for this. Spare is located under the rear deck, which is a real pain when it''s wet or muddy out and you''re dressed in your good clothes (when else do you get a flat??). Water pump packed it in at about 190,000 kms. Cheap to replace & install (about CAD200). If you want to pick nits, it would be nice to be able to get a bench seat in the middle in order to up carrying capacity to 8 (rather than the standard 7). Being able to read the digital clock

Purchase price in 1998 Canadian dollars. Good, reliable vehicle with "normal" VW idiosincracies. Excellent gas mileage and interior room, could use a little more ''guts'' sometimes. Good handling (for a van); comfortable and easy to drive long distances. I''d recommend this for someone who needs a larger than usual mini-van and is looking for good gas mileage and handling, comfortable seating front and rear. Great family transport or "team bus" for those who have to do long (greater than 500 miles) trips. They''re pretty rare, but if well maintained, should be quite trouble free.

Strength:

They are roomy and you can travel in it as well as sleep. you can put the dogs and the kinds in the back and have your own seperate compartmant at the front no need to worry about loadin a caravan correctly because you traveml in the van.

Weakness:

There not alot of storage syou have a awning then you have to detach it away from the van before you can travel which is a bit of a bum.

I had it brought for me as a presant so i dont knoe the price but i have seen second hand vans at very low low prices around 2000-4000 which i think is very fair especiall if your gonna be living in it thats very cheap in the long run.

You could compare it to a caravan they are on the same proseptus, you go on holiday in them, Faily outings,or to live iF YOU DONT HAVE A HOUSE. A Caravan you have to load and make sure that its loaded correctly otherwise you c=will have trouble whilist travelling which is a big worry.

Strength:

It is roomy and high. I don't like the newer vans that sit so low like a car. Wonderful sound system. Lots of room in the back. Tall captain's chairs. Good gas milelage.

Weakness:

I had to change my alternator twice. The air went out twice. The gas indicator malfunctioned. (I had to guess how much gas was in the van until I had it repaired.) I am presently approaching 91,000 miles.

I paid about $21,000 in 1994. It was new. I would recommend it.

Strength:

It has great power! I can easily pull into traffic and not worry.
I also Love the easy loading seat arrangement and the height of the van.

Weakness:

It's not the posh van a lot of people look for at this price range. My feeling about that was the van is solid and very comfortable, not to mention the easy loading seating arrangement. I can load the children and stroller in the main area and never open the back.

This is a great van! I love the space I have and loading my child is great!! I don't need two doors like most vans because I can get both kids (one expected) into the van without ever climbing in. The 2nd row faces the back so my new born will face the back and my 1 year old will face her.
This van sits really high unlike the Honda and other vans we looked at. I look down at other minivans and most trucks. I can see over the cars while driving and it is still low enough in the back (it has a raised front section) to load children and groceries without climbing in. I also like the fact that I never have to climb over the 2nd row to use the 3rd row. The "trunk" area is sectioned so loading packages and bags is very easy. I never have to pile things on top of other items. I also realize I can hide items under the shelf and anyone looking in will not see them.
