Model Reviewed: Chrysler Crossfire Coupe

Strength:

the classy retro design, the acceleration, everything!

Weakness:

None, unless you like to guzzle a convenient store slurpy and qvetch about a stupid cup holder instead of enjoying a wonderful car and making yourself a hazzard to the other people on the road.

Okay, I'm a little sick of some of the online reviewer comments about this car; "not the power of a Nissan Z, has the old type recirculating ball steering, too much money for a Chrysler,ONLY ONE CUP HOLDER AND IT STINKS, etc. All I can counter with is; buy the Z and get a japanese has been with a cheap interior, as for the steering, many folks have been duped by Detroit about the wonderfulness of rack and pinion. The truth is that they developed it as a huge manufacturing cost saving and try to pass it off as greater than sliced bread. It's okay, but it's just a cheap way to steer a car. lastly about the Crossfire cup holder, it beats the heck outta me why cup holders are an issue in a performance sports car, unless a person is still nursing. The Crossfire is hands down one of the best cars ever manufactured. My car is the best car I have ever owned and I have had all the so-called premium cars. My car is 100% Mercedes and a ball to drive and an automotive work of art. Like any machine it's not going to please everybody, especially nitpicker auto expert wannabe types who find fault just for it's own sake. I feel bad about the gullible people who take the picky-uney comments to heart and deprive themselves of a great car with a great value. Except for the soccer moms and average family of four, the Chrysler Crossfire is the best and most exciting car out there for the money. Look at one and follow your heart for the reward of a lifetime instead of listening to self absorbed nit pickers. The design, acceleration and quality of the Chrysler Crossfire are superbly excellent.

Looks, price, handling, comfort.

Weakness:

The rear view needs getting use to.

This is a SLK at a fraction of the price. Frankly, I find it better looking than the SLK. The ride is solid, zippy and handles excellently.

Strength:

Great looks, cozy cabin and plenty of power

Weakness:

Limited vision from the small rear window. It takes a little getting use to entering and exiting the vehicle.

I love attention and this car gets it! My purpose for buying was to get a good-looking car with enough power to get me around. I have found the best looking car around...and it certainly gets me around. I have found the handling to be great and the take-off power it great. I love the spoiler. This car looks great with the spoiler in or out. So, it makes it nice to have it both ways. The automatic transmission with Auto Stick is cool and fun! The interior is lush. Heated leather seats...and this car warms up quickly, so you don't have to be parking at work before you get warm. I considered a BMW Z4, but after driving the Crossfire...I knew it had to be mine. And...wow, does it ever turn heads!

Strength:

Weakness:

Realibility; service capability by Chryler Dealerships; cup holder; blind spots.

As soon as I drove the car off the lot I had trouble with it jumping out of first gear. The dealership blamed it on my being a woman not knowing how to drive a standard! The first time in the shop, they could not find anything wrong. Finally after almost having several accidents, they found the problem so with only 13,700 miles on the car, they installed a new transmission. When I finally got the car back the console was broken. I am in the process of selling this car. If it isn't a year old and already falling apart, I'm not going to wait to see what happens "down the road".

Model Reviewed: Chrysler Crossfire Coupe

Strength:

The car has a solid feel like a sedan. But most sedans won't glide through curves like this. There is real power here. You don't have to stomp on it to feel it. The trunk may be small by some standards but this is a big plus compared to any Nissan Z, SLK (top down) or the Infinity G35 coupe.

Weakness:

The Crossfire could have benefited from climate control. Not too much to ask for a car in this price range. The Crossfire is not enhanced by the wheels. The fact that there are two different sizes means upgrades are limited. Consider replacing the standard wheels with chrome. My stereo came tuned to ghetto blaster status. While you can make adjustments it appears the 200+ watt stereo is intended for people that want to feel the music and not listen to it.

The Benz SLK has some of the most beautiful sheet metal and a fold down hard top that creates the best of sports coupes and convertables. The 320 has wood trim. The extra money does indeed buy more. If those things are most important, buy the SLK or the new 2005 model. The interior of the Crossfire model is almost identical. The changes in the dials and finish update the look. I considered a used SLK 320 at the same price. I couldn't justify it considering waranty, rebates and financing. I've owned a Mercedes sedan for many years and this is the real deal. The body styling might be puting a little too much lipstick on the SLK classic, but it does get attention. Like every Mercedes, the turning radius is a plus, you come to appreciate. The car is quite a bit quieter than the competition, even with the oversized tire noise. The power is impressive. The handling more so. It feels like you can drive through any turn as if on rails. It's fun.

Weakness:

Poor rear visibility. Should have a rear camera option as on some SUVs. No spare tire and runflats not available.

Merc did an excellent job in creating this vehicle. Visually it has the grace of classic cars such as the Talbot or Bugatti. It's reliability is honed and proven because it is the SLK drivetrain and built in the same facility as the SLK and CLK. What Mercedes did was improve the structural rigidity and handling of the SLK when they created the Crossfire. Given the SLK already had one of the most rigid structers and one of the best real world safety record of any sports car, the improvements are a major accomplishment. Handling is exceptional, especially transient response. If you look at reviews with slalom or lane change speed, the Crossfire is ahead of the S2000, 350Z,Z4 etc. The steering is recirculating ball which has pluses and minuses compared with rack and pinion. However, it is a fact that rack and pinion is cheaper to manucature and is used by many manufacturers as a cost saving measure. It has less feel than the best rack and pinion, but the recirculating ball eliminates the kicked wheel effect, when going over bumps in a turn, which is a common problem with rack and pinion. The interior is excellent for a mid $30k sports car. It is better than the 2005 Vette, 350Z or Honda S2000 and tied with the Z4. For best interior in this price range the Audi TT is still ahead. The sound, once the revs are up, is excellent. The 6 speed, is precise and better than on the M3 and Porsche, but not as good as as the Z4, S2000 or Miata. In short, the Crossfire is an excellent sports car with more than enough speed. It is a bargain in the original version. The SRT6 version, on the other hand, is no competition for the 05 Vette even though the price is similar.

Model Reviewed: 3.2 Coupe

Strength:

The engines nice, sounds good plenty of power in that 3.2 V6. Shame the car can't handle it.

Weakness:

Awful, awful gearbox and the rest of the car is pretty much the same.

Oh dear, just when it looked like Chrysler had got back on track with Mercedes Benz helping out they went and released this thing. It's a blatent rip-off of a Mercedes SLK and has the same V6 that the AMG model had. Unfortunetly, those of you who have driven the model in question would have found that the chassis stood no chance of coping with the engine and as an overall package could only ever go fast well in a straight line, never mind. Surely then, Chrysler has taken the time to fix the problems and make thar the SLK 32 AMG should have been? Well, no acutally. They've only gone and made it worse, the questionable looks resemble something reminicent of a Massey Ferguson tractor from the rear and the front looks like the face of a bulldog in a wind tunnel. Mind you the exhausts do look pretty cool. The gearbox is the same as the chassis, very poor. It dosn't do very much well and you're better off settling for a manual gearbox instead of the horrid paddle shift and saving yourself a grand in the process. So, overall - it's a bulldog's face in a windtunnel with a tractor grafted on to it's rear end with an engine the rest of the car the can't deal with. Oh dear.

Had originally considered a 350Z until I drove the Crossfire. The car handles like a guided missile - extremely stable with no body sway. I haven't noticed the reported "lack of steering feel", despite the lack of rack and pinion. The fact that the Crossfire is built in Germany using Mercedes parts was an mportant factor in my buying decision. Although the Crossfire has 70 less HP than the 350Z, it is still very quick. And, I have never owned a car that gets the attention the Crossfire does.
