Strength:
Speed and handling as well as exotic looks
Weakness:
Can be a little finicky What a monster! This car kicks ass. I have never driven a sports car that was so exilerating. The car always wants to go, the sequential twin turbos are always ready to propel you forward fast! The car takes turns like it is on rails, just when you think you may lose it the car lays down and bites in to the road, almost no body roll at all. No dive or squat either. That does not mean you can't kick out the tail at will. Very controlable though, great feel for the road, the limits are recognisable and predictable. Like one man said this cars limits can be reached on the streat only by the foolhardy. Talk about looks, I get a lot of looks and a lot of people that just have to tell me the car is cool. However it is not your traditionally reliable Japanese commuter. It takes a little more TLC than your average sports car, but I think it is worth it every time a blow away a Mustang GT, C4 Vette, 300ZX or Camaro. Strength:
Handling, performance, smoothness and willing engine. Excellent power to weight ratio. This car can clean up on much bigger V-8's if you know how to drive. The suspension and mechanicals are very sophisticated and reliable, as long as reasonable maintainance is performed and you live within the considerable RPM limits of the engine.
Weakness:
There are now very few mechanics who know anything about the Wankel Rotary and there seem to be fewer every year. The engine is simple in layout, but very complex to troubleshoot problems and very different than any piston engine. That is both its strength and weakness. The Turbo Rotary has limited torque until the RPM's reach around 3000 but then it comes alive. The fuel consumption is a bit high, but not really bad considering the considerable power available. Those who claim the Wankel is "gutless" don't really know how to operate the engine. Unlike the American V-8, the Wankel needs to rev. It is probable the most rugged/reliable engine I have seen, as long as it has clean lub oil and a good air filter. It does not tolerate dirt. The RX-7 has not been available new in the USA since 1995. That means even the last cars are over 5 years old. The "Third Generation" cars were even more sophisticated than the "Second Gens" like my '87, but they were much less reliable. A good Second Gen that has been maintained and not abused (rare) will easily run 150,000 or more before needing serious engine work. But, as I said earlier, it's getting hard to find anyone who knows anything about these things. I have all the manuals, and I take responsablility for my own scheduled maintenance. My car has 112,000 and still runs and even looks like new. The electronics; heater, air conditioning, and other switches are becomming a source of trouble. If you need to buy parts, you will see that Mazda is very proud of the RX-7. Some of the electronics can be repaired by an owner who is adept with a soldering iron and know how to read a schematic, but the dealer will want to "Remove and Replace" which is very expensive. I have owned two RX-7's and if they make another Wankel engined car, I will probably buy one. I love the turbine-like power. Similar Products Used: Nissan 3000ZX, the Mazda is Smaller, lighter, more nimble. Chevrolet Camaro, the Mazda is smaller, lighter, more nimble and VASTLY more sophisticated than even the current Camaro., Mustang, the Mazda is smaller, lighter, more nimble, and far less sophisticated. The RX-7 makes the american "pony -cars" seem like crude kids toys. You will need to look to Porsche to get comparable sophistication and performance. |

The car is the best handling car I have ever driven, thanks to the near perfect weight distribution. Its faster than a crotch rocket on a tight twisty road. It certainly turns heads b/c its so loud (aftermarket pipe). The only problems I have encountered are wierd door-related problems, but then again I've only had it for 2 months.
Weakness:
The car needs more power. It isnt that fast in a straight line. It floods if you move it up and down the driveway. I would reccomend this to anyone who is willing to take care of their car and not put off regularly scheduled maintenance. Similar Products Used: None |

everything....almost.My rx has 321,200 miles on the same engine and it has never been out of the car. I have had the car 10 years and it has left me on the side of the road only two times. Once for a busted oil line and the other for a problem in the distributer.
Weakness:
The cost of dealer parts.(oil hoses $180.00) I do not see why all of you complian about the gas mileage, because mine gets 20-23 almost all the time. 20mpg at 70mph and above and 23.5 at 55-65mph.No matter how I drive it. If I hot rod it in the city I still get 20 mph average. If you flood it just pour 2-4 ounces in the carb and wait a minute or two and start it without putting your foot on the gas pedal until it starts to run and then push down SLOWLY on the pedal until you are sure it will run and not die cause if you try to start it with your foot on the gas it will NOT start. Well any way mine has been good to me and I know how to take care of it. 321200 miles proves it. The car had only 149,000 miles on it when we got it. We have never replaced the clutch also. This car has a lot of soul. My dad owned two RX-7's before me and we love them. It's great to cruise around with the top down on sunny days. This car handles better than anything else I've ever driven and you'll hardly ever see another one out on the road.
Weakness:
Well, the car is almost 12 years old and it shows pretty bad. The top is leaking around the windows, the interior is out of style, the seat is very worn on the side that you slide by when you squeeze in. These are not fast cars by any means... they get out of their own way, but don't expect to beat out anything with more than a 4 cylander engine. The ride is rather rough, but that doesn't bother me much. I love the uniqueness and personality of the car, but the sunny days and looks from girls can't outweigh the noise and leaks. This is a great hobby car, but for every day use or distance driving, I'd look into somthing newer. Also, don't try to impress anybody with it's speed... it doesn't have a lot. Similar Products Used: The only other car I've driven extensively is a Lexus SC400. The Lexus is by far faster and smoother, but the RX-7 handles better and is simply more fun to drive. |

Incredible amounts of power, handles like a dream, can dust almost anything
Weakness:
Likes gas a little to much for me, Electrical problems (very minor), nothing else...period Best car EVER...I can only speak for my 7, but it is almost unbeatable. Mine is fairly modified, but not too much from the stock turbo II. You can set me up against almost any car (excluding ferraris, ZO6 vettes, lambos, porsche turbos, lotus v8s, vipers, and extremely modded musclecars), and my little 1.3 will come out victorious. Put me on a curvy road and my 7 is unstoppable. The absolute best car i have ever owned or ridden in. For about 4 grand I got a car that can compete with exotics. Smooth rotary engine
Weakness:
Poor gas mileage This car is smooth. The sound of the turbo charged rotary is awesome when it kicks in. The motor just growles at you wanting you to make it scream. Acceleration is sweet. It has no hesitation at any point on the tach. This is a car that puts Mustangs and Camaros to shame. People pull up to my car with their Ford's and Chevy's and look at me like I'm driving a slow weird looking car. The look on their face changes when I dust them off the line and them not knowing what the hell car just took off like a bat out of hell. Sometimes I feel like I'm driving the bat mobile.
