Strength:

It corners like a dream Loves to rev high Gets you laid Dont see much of the turbo models around Pull's off the line like a dream What else can i say this car is all about strengths.

Weakness:

Eats gas but what can you exspect for a sports car from the 80's Electrical is bad High price to maintaine

Over all this is a spectacular car. It handles like a dream.Gets you hot girls, ever since ive got this machine ive been getting laid like no tomorrow. Nicest looking car from the 80's,real head turner and the best thing about this car is not many on the road. The sound of that turbo is like nothing else especially when you add a Greddy bov.The interior styling is beautiful especially the leather.Mine is still in mint cond inside and out. The engine is a diff story yes it is pricy to maintaine but if you take care of it the car it will last.I brought mine into my mechanic that took me a long time to find because i didnt want just anyone working on my car.By the way thats rule #1 get a mechanice that knows rotary engns. This car has 200,000 km's and with $1,500 put into the rebuilt engine when i bought it, nothing compares. Ive taken out supras integres and pretty much everything else except for those pricey ones. All i got to say is civic's stop wasting my time you know your gonna loose and gas is getting pricey. Because of a hatch back my to pioneer twelves produce excellent sound I just purchased a wicked body kit from gp sports real nice touch.if your looking for wicked style check this site out gpsports-na.com All i have to say is thank you mazda for making my life a good one.

Strength:

My car's been modified (see above), has maybe 350 horses up front. Acceleration is outstanding, so is handling. The ride is fine on highways & country roads, harsh on ciity streets with bad pavement. The car's light weight & sensitive steering make it feel like a race car. I've driven a Viper & a twin-turbo Supra - they're very nice, but not as agile as the RX-7. They're GT's - the RX-7 feels like it wants to be on the track.

Weakness:

The car has been a handful, reliablilty-wise, and not everybody who thinks they can work on this car knows what they're doing, so I'll say it one more time; Dave at KDR in Nazareth, PA is the guy to go to if your RX-7 has problems.

I bought this car in 1994 with only 3000 miles on it, after owning 2 1st gen. RX-7's. My '93 was great for 4 years then needed an engine & turbos. I had trouble finding good mechanics until I found KDR in Nazareth, PA this year. Dave Barninger own KDR and is by far the most knowledgeable guy about the car I've ever met or even heard of. My car was running just so-so with 70,000 miles on it and just didn't have the acceleration any more. Dave explained everything wrong with the car before we started, then I had him put on a Greddy intercooler, Koyo radiator, replaced the down pipe with a straight pipe, put on an APEXi programmable computer, "efini" aluminum straight pipes and a Y-pipe (to replace all the cheap rubber & plastic hoses & pipes and places that come loose and let your turbo-boosted air bleed out) and a new front sway bar up front. In the back new spherical bearings eliminated that horrible clunking and a toe-link kit from Petit Racing took care of the rear. The car is now 100% street driveable, with a LOT MORE POWER, but perhaps the most noticeable thing is the incredible stability of the rear end. The toe link kit makes a big difference. The ride of my R-1 is still very firm but liveable. The car now drives and handles BETTER THAN NEW. The best thing is I was able to keep the sequential twin turbo setup, didn't have to lower the car and feel my RX-7 will be a reliable street driver for years to come and will not require any more major mods. By the way, the APEXi computer is really nice - gives digital displays of your water temp, air temp, manifold vacuum & turbo boost, air temp and more things if you want them. It's programmable so you can not only change the displays but up your boost, change fuel & ignition parameters, etc. Total cost of all mods & upgrades was around $5500 - well worth it. Dave at KDR gets RX-7's sent to him from all over the country - he's the best. After years of barely driving it I love my RX-7 again.

Strength:

Light, very powerful, due to V8. Easy to get misc. parts for, just get connected with some rx7 nuts and get info on dead cars. Not a very common car to see on the road these days. If they're not on the road there in someone's yard waiting for a smart buyer. Just know what your getting into. Like most people once you start messing with 7's you really can't stop. Even if you get rid of everything you have that was once on a rx-7 you'll still lust for them, search the classifieds for them, and search ebay for them. One of those cars you can build a lifestyle from.

Weakness:

COPS, COPS, COPS and hmm COPS. Some people like to horde first gen 7's. I know a guy that has 30+ behind his shop, he races 7's. If you can't work on cars, don't buy a 7 unless you like paying 50%mark up and labor on 15+ year old car. I love to work on them so it's not really a weakness for me. GS and GSL's have a bolt patern thats had to get rims for, try to find a GSL-SE if you want a better selection of rims.

I bought the car from a used car dealer that couldn't get it running. Took it home and after about two weeks got around to working on it, after checking to make sure the ignition and fuel pump were working I did the trans. fluid in the rotor housing trick. After about 30min. the motor started to wake up. Never could get it running past ~3000rpm (bad secondaries?) So I decided to put a V8 in it. Yes this is sac relig. but only until you drive it. A 2500lb Rx-7 with a 325hp V8 is divine. Quick, yes Fast, I've only been 115mph (I live in the city) but 115 comes on fast and hard. I love first gen 7's, I've also had an 84 GSL-SE, but had to sell it because I joined the militay and didn't have NEED to have three cars. (also have a 89 toyota truck) I don't really drive the 7 much due the fact I know I'll get in trouble. I have one warning with it already. If any of your great rotary engines die go to GrannysSpeedShop.com and let them show you the way to ear to ear smiles with every drive.

Fast good handling lots of performance parts fun to drive

Weakness:

gas mileage "not bad for a sports car" cost of repair

Iv had this car for two years now and would not trade it for any other car. What some people need to realize is that this is a sports car, and its great at it. The 2nt gen's may not win in a drag race vs. a Mustang GT, but there is no way a GT handles as good as an RX.

Strength:

The car is a pleasure to drive, even though it only has 100hp, it feels like it has quite a bit more. Handling is beautifully balanced, with very controllable oversteer. As an example of how good the handling is, at an autocross, I beat a brand new Cadillac CTS with a 5-speed, a 300whp AWD Talon, a C4 Vette, a turbocharged Civic, a Subaru WRX, and numerous other cars. I beat all of them with tires I bought brand new for $193, mounted and balanced (all 4), and many of my opposition had high performance tires.

Weakness:

Repair shops are stupid and dont know how to work on rotaries. Fortunately they are pretty easy to learn how to work on though, so you can do the work yourself.

It may not be the fastest thing on 4 wheels, but the first gen RX-7 was and is one of the best sports cars for the price ever created. I got mine, 17 years old, with 65,000 miles, for $1300. It had a leaky gas tank, which I fixed soon after, and it has been very very reliable, not a single problem. For its age, it is in phenominal condition. The exterior has a small dent, and the interior has a couple cracks in the vinyl, but other than that, its perfect. I bought this car as much for its engine as for its handling. The rotary engine is a beautiful and elegant design, with capabilities far exceeding a piston engine of equal size. It sounds awesome too. How many engines back in 1979 could make 100hp out of a stock 1.15L engine, naturally aspirated? Not many. It also has a very flat torque curve. If you want to know how a rotary engine works, go to www.rotaryengineillustrated.com . Three moving parts, simple. The non-turbocharged rotaries are arguably much more reliable than piston engines too.

personaly i think that the mazda rx7 is a true sports machine but it is not for the weak especialy when you have it modified with a 20b triple rotor in it.But i race it after every race i have to service the thing. It pulls 9.09sec down the thunderdome 1/4mile i have always had a passion for rotaries but they need alot of maintenance if you look after it it will look after you you have to be devoted like looking after a dog.But it is a chik magnet of a car.I race against nissan skyline gtrs toyota supras, honda preludessubaru wrx stiall crap there is no comparison to the rx7 Take my word you will not regret it if you buy one just as long as you look after it

Strength:

Great acceleration over 100mph and not bad under running 11 second quarter mile times. Car now pulls over a G on the skidpad.

Weakness:

Reliability and cost of upkeep.

Hey whats up? I have a 93 Base model, I agree with the problems of reliability but the pure pleasure of driving the car far outweighs the cost of upkeep. I've had it less than a year and have already dropped in over 20K worth of mods and repairs. Yeah it's a lot but to out run almost every car on the road with a 1.3 litre engine and have it hissing air out the greddy bov theres nothing like it. I'll never turn my back on the RX-7 it's truely one of the best Sports cars made.

gas milage is average but not horrid like others said if you love the car gas if just like food to your baby

ok ok so u say that you love this car or you hate this car but you know what ive noticed alot more of these models at the tracks than on the road dont get me wrong itis fun winning races with an 88 but it sure would be nice to do it with a turbo . this car after this long still runs like new even when racing some modifications have been made but nothing dramatic first gen 79-85 are fun and classics in their own right, and third gens 92-95 are the fastest on u.s soil but the winner for the funniest to drive easiest to maintain and best lookin has to go to the second gen 86-91 the only thing better would be the japanese only models 96-present yes they are still produced ha thought the rotary was dead huh well wrong japan still produces theses awesome beasts
