Safety is no where what the new cars have. I am the original owner of this 1979 RX-7 (the first year of the RX-7, unlike the previous reviewer that mentions they go back to 1975). I also drive it everyday to work. I have 180,000 miles on the original engine. What can I say? I may finally sell it when the RX-8 comes out. Strength:
Cost(Corvette perfomance on a Geo Metro budget), power, not everyone has a rx kinda rare, fun to drive, decent gas mileage, a lot of modifcations availible.
Weakness:
Gas mileage(mostly on cars with the 12a motor, the first Generation motor), bodys are rust prone, since its rare parts are more expe$ive then ,say, a domestic, and if your a male teen insurance is highway robbery. I bought this 1982 from a friend about a couple months ago. I love it. It has Corvette perfomance on a Geo metro budget. Its body needs paint and a door but other than that its ok. It has beeching power. I have yet to take it to its maxium speed but i''ve heard it will go 130 (mph). Rotary motors last very long if you give it TLC. Mine has a 5 speed, its very fun to drive in all conditions. I would recommend either buying a first generation(1975-1985) or third generation(1991-last year of production, i think 1993) Second generation (1986-1990) had problems with electronics because Mazda used substanard materials in soldering stuff which in time would fail. Thats where rx-7 got a bad rap for poor electronics. Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
- Rock solid reliability. Like anything mechanical, proper maintenance is critical. Point here is that routine maintenance is relatively inexpensive in this car. - all weather top is bullet proof; even after 14 years! - headrest speakers help alleviate the weak sound system stemming from 80''s technology. - Partly due to mild winters and smooth roads here in CA, the ride is as smooth as those found in cars twice as expensive and 10 years newer. - exclusivity. 5000 units produced in ''88. Production ended after ''91 model year. - great commuter/carpool vehicle. - dare I say, classical styling? 14 years later, I find flared wheel wells and ''edgy''and creased beltlines on Lexus, BMW, Mercedes etc... Point is, you don''t need to pay 30k for a rare vehicle.
Weakness:
- structural integrity leaves much to be desired over rough surfaces. - gas mileage is not great; 16 to 18 with top down and about 20 to 22 with top up. But hey, it''s a sports car and we''re talking ''80s technology. - body is very susceptible to dings and scratches. This car cost about 30k fully loaded back in 87/88 but the paint and body as a whole don''t hold up well; some cheap plastic body parts accentuate color fade. - for a sports car- one that weighs 3300 lbs, it has very weak brakes. If there''s one customization that I do to this car, it would be to strengthen the brakes. - depreciation leaves alot to be desired. I keep thinking if I keep it long enough, it''ll appreciate but maybe that''s just wishful thinking. Please, go out and get yourself a good used copy for my sake. - blindspot in the rear top can make lane changes and reversing out of parking spots hazardous even if you''re extra cautious. Having owned this car now for more than 4 years, I''m comfortable writing this review and endorsement of the second generation RX-7: Owning a performance sports car doesn''t get any cheaper than this. The car is a paragon of reliable Japanese engineering. (Having bought the car with 60k on it four years ago) Now with more than 102K on the odometer, not once has it failed me anywhere. The OEM Bridgestones utilized old tire technology and gave off a very rough, unrefined ride. Moreover, I found they did not give the car good balance on sharp turns. I switched over to Michelin Pilots and found noticeable improvements. The ride became quieter and much more subdued on freeway driving with minimal tracking in road grooves. Sharp exit ramps can be taken up to 8/10ths before I could feel the edge of oversteer creeping up. ( Finally, much better performance in the rain with the Pilots.) You definitely have to get the revs on the appropriately placed rpm gauge above 4,000 RPMs to get this high revving engine to move the 3300 lbs mass. With redline at 7,000 RPM, this car loves to rev and can provide strong acceleration from 3rd gear through 4th gear. 5th is stricly for cruising I found. If you''re buying this car, and you have a remote desire to take turns fast now and then, do not even think of getting the automatic- regardless of how congested your commute gets. Don''t be a pantsy! Get the 5-spd! When compared to the first generation Miata- which I owned once- I find the ride of the RX-7 to be much less choppy. ( Longer wheelbase and plain bigger as a whole.) I would not classify the RX-7 as a boulevard convertible but find that it provides a nice compramise between a pure roadster and say a Celica convertible of the same generation. Shifting and linkages do not come close to the Miata. From my perspective and values when it comes to four-wheeled transportation- the second generation RX-7 gets you from point A to point B at minimal costs, yet, can still bring a grin to your face now and then. Weakness:
Bad smogg (ugh), shorter engine life than usual Ok, here i am to set people straight again. They either say "It''s a great fast car, with killer handling, speed, braking.." or "It''s motor doesn''t last, it eats gas, it''s hard to smogg.." Well here''s a few things to note. The rotary engine is a far more powerfull engine than your standard cylinder engine. With one revolution of the rotor it produces 3 powerstrokes. the equivalent of 6 strokes on a cylinder engine, and a dual rotary produces 6 powerstrokes. You do the math. Problem is with all those strokes, it pukes out pollutants because it''s chambers are controlled by the rotor and when it spins fast, it doesn''t seal them off as good. Now, the weight and the power of the car make it and excellent race car. Supras and RX-7''s go hand in hand with 300Z''s. Possibly the 3 greatest sports cars ever made? However i don''t recommend the RX-7 for everyday driving. You think it''d be cool to show off your RX-7 every day at work or your friends'' houses and stuff, well wrong! Show if off on the track and on the street every couple of days, just not EVERY day. As for them being in the shop alot, if you put slop in it, it''s going to be in the shop. People think if they change the oil and fluids every 3000 miles it''ll be ok. Well you need to check it at least once a week and see how it''s doing. That''s why if you want this car you need to be knowledgeable about them. Synthetic motor and gear oil are essential to prolonging it''s life. And keep it clean. You don''t want to get crap in the turbos. Also like i mentioned with the Supras. If you just get in your turbo car and drive it. Then stop and get out, your going to screw up your car. for some reason people don''t know that turbos NEED TO BE WARMED UP AND COOLED DOWN. So when you''re going to take off, start the car 1 or 2 minutes before you go, then when you''re done, let it cool down for 45 seconds. YOu''ll be doing you, and your car a favor. Sound, Car audio sound, Only 75k original miles on an 86'', speed, girls, look, reliable, only on 2nd clutch...
Weakness:
Shiesty ass paint job, no back seat room, electrical sucks,(Have to drop the glove box for the heater to start)hrm.. sunroof sticks, mirrors sucks, not fast enough to evade, no damn turbo, uhm... rims are ugly. It''s a great car, it doesnt seem to have the accleration that i like, seeming my other source of transportation does the quarter in 10sec or less (2001 Triumph TT600 Bullet Bike) other then that i love the way car audio sounds in this car, with two twelves facing the rear the hatchback seems to improve any subwoofer type. The handiling is fine, it likes to lean away from the corners tho and try to do 4 wheel power slides. Similar Products Used: None |

GTUs
Strength:
Handling, decent gas mileage, attractive body style
Weakness:
rough riding suspension, limited seating capacity, poor dealer service network I have had four RX-7s: 1986 base model, 1987 base, 1990 GTUs and 1993 Touring. The GTUs is a lightweight performance model made to allow Mazda to compete in the GT under 3 liter clas in IMSA competition. In 1990 they only made 100 of them, which was the minimum factory production run required to meet the IMSA rules. The car is basically the Turbo II version without the turbocharger. Also, all unnecessary weight has been removed- no power windows, no sunroof, no cruise control. etc. Hood is aluminum, wheels are the larger 16 inch cast aluminum used on the turbo II. Rear axle ratio is a drag strip 4.3 to 1 limited slip. Seats are special grippy corduroy. Interior has leather Momo steering wheel and shifter. Suspension is extra heavy duty- it is NOT a smooth ride. Straight line acceleration is adequate, but not blistering fast. Cornering, however, is exceptional. High and low speed turns, switch-backs and the like are handled with ease. Few cars can equal the superb handling ability of this back-road speedster. Top end speed is about 150 mph, at which the car feels rock-solid and stable. I have almost 200K miles on the original suspension, shocks and most components. The engine and transmission were rebuilt at about 100K miles, due to a mistake made by an incompetent Mazda dealer mechanic. Oil left out of the engine and gear oil left out of the transmission killed both. Needless to say, dealer service is lacking in some cases. All in all, a serious car for the sports car enthusiast. Not for families with kids- only a two seater, or for someone who likes a soft riding car. Similar Products Used: 1986 RX-7, 1987 RX-7, 1993 RX-7 |

Strength:
Good body and frame. Classic sportscar styling. Uses aluminum parts in 2nd gen. 1st Gen is even lighter since it is smaller & simpler. High output to weight ratio (but with all the emissions control it comes out no better). Maybe good for the track since they don''t care about these things.
Weakness:
Let''s see: Did I mention the engine & tranny? Unconventional engine: leads to unconventional (read expensive) problems like overheating (rotaries put out way too much heat), flooding (Mazda''s poor injector quality), & bad fuel economy for what u get (150-200hp but at below 20mpg even on highway, compare to a high performance 4 or good V6 or V8 its no contest). Tranny: its conventional but truly underbuilt so there are problems like pilot bearing & synchos. Interior parts: Plastic is cheap & cracks. Electronics like Logicon, wiper switches, power windows are subpar. Exterior: Looks good but thin metal to make it lite, makes it rust (in 1st gen) or makes it weak. The headlight motors also weak. Window sills rust. Hatch collects water if drainage holes are not cleared regularly. If u like cheap, fun sports cars and do not mind fixing cars (including changing engines & trannys), this is the car for u. These thing are high maintenance to say the least. Rotaries are unforgiving to overheating. Do it once and count on buying a new engine. Engine easily floods, water jacket breaks, apex seals goes, etc.. On top of that they are not very good on gas mileage and engine parts are expensive and not rebuildable in most cases. Maybe good on high output but no match to pistons in terms of reliability, rebuildability, or fuel economy. On top of that the manual transmissions are also weak. Particularly in the pilot bearing and synchros department. Mazda quality is not as good as other Japanese makes (probably because owned by Ford).
