Mazda RX7
Strength:
Incredible car "out of the box" -- handling, performance, styling. Extremely rare...
Weakness:
Bad reputation for reliablity. HOWEVER, if well maintained, engines will last 100,000+ miles with no problems. What do you expect from a street-legal production race car? Wonderful car....paid a premium for this car because less than 1400 95''s were sold in the US. 100% stock and running great! Similar Products Used: Traded in my ''00 mustang for this. There is -no- comparison. Mustangs are nice cars with good styling, but they''re a dime a dozen. The RX7 is extremely unique, and a joy to drive. |

Hope you have stock in one or more oil companies My experience with the 13B must be one in a million, because the motor I know has been thrashed for nearly 15 years and simply refuses to die. Similar Products Used: Own/owned: 1996 Eclipse, 1999 Mustang GT |

Strength:
transmission, acceleration, ungodly feeling you get seeing the oponent behind you.
Weakness:
repairs, gas mileage I have owned two RX7's. My 1987 I drove back and forth to school and traveled alot with it. When I sold it, it still ran and it had 202,000 miles on it. I then had already bought a 1991 RX7 and started putting money into it to get it where I wanted it. There is this curve that was called screw hill. My first experience in racing it was against a 1996 camaro and that is how I beat him was that curve. I took it and 120 mph and I tell you a mazda is the only car I would do that in. I was gripping the road so tight I felt like I was the road. My best friend put a stage 2 turbo system on his 300zx , K&N filter charger and my mazda had no problem keeping up with it. My mother now owns his 300zx and I race both cars every chance I get. I ran a 350 tpi in a GTA and I feel that the mazda can stand up against anything and come out on top. You can get them on takeoff and the acceleration in ungodly. Shifting a mazda is like nothing else in the world. My mazda is retired now at 94,000 miles. It sits in the garage under a car cover only getting to cruise around once in a while when it is very nice weather. I would not give my mazda up for nothing in the world. RX7
Strength:
This car is very powerfull (255 hp in a 1800 lb package), extremely fast (limiter cuts power at 160 mph and feels like you've hit a brick wall when it cuts), and acceleration has to be felt to be believed. The car handles better than any other sports car I've ever experienced price no object. Its stopping power is incredible, and the attention it brings is great.
Weakness:
Sometimes the car can get a little tail happy with factory wheel and tire combos, especially in the rain, due to the weight to power ratio. Routine maintenance must be done on time without fail. The car has little if any tolarance of careless owners that procrastinate w/ oil changes especially. Rather than talking down on the lesser cars we'll just say that the only cars that make any kind of comparison are the Saleen, the C5, and the Viper. First the Saleen, I've not personally put them head to head so in acceleration I don't know. However when it comes to taking curves and handling in general the RX7 blows this heavy weight out of the water. Now the C5 once again no comparison in handling curves, I also have won a race on the interstate against a C5. He kept up from about 75 mph where we started up until around 130-135 mph where I finnaly started to pull away from him. By the time I hit 150 mph I had a good 4-5 car lengths on him at which point he backed off. Now the Viper now with this one it goes without saying in a 1/4 mile the RX7 doesn't stand a chance however in the curves I found the Viper to be a bit indesive not as good steering feed back as I was expecting from the car that I had dreamed of driving for so long. So once again even for the Viper find me on a good winding and you'll get smoked. As you may have figured I love my 3rd generation RX7 and wouldn't consider trading it for anything unless, of coarse, you can show me something that will hold a candle to it in the streights and the curves. This is a car for anyone who wants to get where they're going and fast. It is true, however, that you should be ready to spend some money if and when it desides to give you troubles. Also realize that I see most of these cars having engine rebuilds around 75-85,000 miles so if your looking at one and it's near this point ask if it's already been rebuilt. If not it will probably need to be fairly soon. I've never seen one go over 119,000 miles and that one died recently on the dyno reading 425 hp with serious mods. rust, fuel, parts, over all good car. rust a problem. I have owned three of them. get the 1984,or 1985 13b engine. Put in a cut off switch between your engine and yourgas pump. This will avoid problematic flooding. Its a great way to taste real proformance.Hard on comfort. Good handling,Great to work on, Lots of space in engine bay. Strength:
This car begs to be driven. It has an amazing throttle response and very predictable handling due to the neutral weight distribution. The car has a weight/HP ratio similar to a C4 Corvette, but the weight is lower making the car respond quicker in manouvers (lower mass of inertia).
Weakness:
This car is complex. If you are not mechnically inclined, you will be in trouble because most Mazda certified mechanics are clueless about this car. To my wife's dismay, I do most repairs and all troubleshooting myself. Let there be no mistake - you get what you pay for. If you like sportscars and your budget does not stretch to an Acura NSX, Porsche 911 or Corvette C4, an RX7 is a good buy. You will have to live with tight quarters and little convenience, low gas milage/high insurance plus difficult maintenance, but what you get is serious uncompromised performance for street driving. This is not the kind of car you want your 18 year old son driving around in. In fact anyone out there selling these cars to teens should be spanked. Things happen fast and the car is a serious handful on wet pavement. Similar Products Used: 911/928, NSX, Corvette C4, 300ZX TT, Supra TT. |

Strength:
Great looks, Handles well, and very quick.
Weakness:
Dealers are idiots and couldn't fix the tailpipe properly if the instructions were tattooed to their eyelids. I own these cars,Izusu Impluse AWD turbo, Porsche 993/(911) Cab, and I drive them all with pleasure. The RX7 is a middle car that is fun to drive, it handles well, and proformance parts are easy to come by.For a low key road rocket it great. It's limited top end (155mph), unless you remove the limiter, is lacking, its not as fast as a Porsche. I love the car for it simply road manners, This car was never designed for people that want comfort in a sports car. This is simply a drivers car and the the more you modify it less comfortable it becomes. Its is the truest street race car delivered form the factories in a long time. For the price you can't beat it and those who complain about fuel economy, buy a Yugo, sport cars don't get good gas milage and they never will. 10th Anniversary RX-7 (Turbo II)
Strength:
I love Everything about this car. What is there not to love? It looks good, handles good, and still to this say gets alot of attention. People always think that it is a 95 or new, mostly because not very many people in Utah have seen a 93-95 RX-7. I would buy this car again and again. For the age of the car, 12 years old, it still can compete with many cars today. I have raced many Cameros, Mustangs, 3000GT SL's, etc. and have kicked thier ass time and time again.
Weakness:
The maintanence repairs can be pricey, but these cars aren't meant to be driven daily. They are just like any other sports cars. They need some love and car to make them run the way the should. I would definetaly recommend this car to someone who is looking for a good sports car without the sports car price. You can take this car to a level of performance that is unbelieveable. The RX-7, old and new, has to be the best sports car ever. Similar Products Used: I have driven my fair share of Mustangs, Cameros, and Firebirds. The lower models with V6 cannot even compare to this car. I am talking about 1994 and up too. You take a car from back in 1988 and there is not competition whatsoever. |
