Produced from 1990-1995 and extended until 1999 for Japan and other countries is the second generation MR2 or the Mark II. It comes equipped with two engine versions, the normally aspirated manufactured from 1990-1995 and the turbocharged produced from 1990-1995. The third generation or Mark III commonly known as the MR2 Spyder is considered as the first convertible model. It is produced from 2000 with its normally aspirated and turbocharged engine version. Its classic creation is better known to be boosted by MR2 Toyota Parts. Fit, precise, and top-quality are the distinct characteristics of these parts.

Strength:

Very fast, most perfectly balanced car I have ever drove, bang for its buck, reliable, nice sound system,

Weakness:

Turbo has been known to some times go out on them, buts thats o.k. buy a new 375 horse power hks upgrade kit.

You should buy this car because it is a fun summer car with the available t-top. No matter were you look you will not find a car that out performs for it's price or even $20,000 more.

Model Reviewed: Toyota MR2 NA

Strength:

This is a true sports car. You feel like your in a Ferrari. But it is priced like a civic. It handles better than anything else I have ever driven.

Weakness:

The lower model stereo can only hit highs but that can be fixed (I am just lazy).

The car just feels right. When you get in all you see is the road. Being mid-engine the front hood only has to clear the wheels. It is weird at first but you get used to it very fast. When you turn it on it fires immediately and the engine revs to just over 2000 (when cold). The sound completes the picture. From inside the engine sounds amazing but don't expect to have a quiet conversation at redline with a friend.
The NA is well geared. It is not extremely fast to 60. But in fifth gear you can get from 60-90 or 100 pretty quickly. I love this about it. From any speed going faster is easy. The torque band is wide and useable. By 4000 something you get peak torque of 140 ft-lbs. The only problem with the power curve is that right as the horsepower peaks it just falls off. So at 5500 the tach is flying but 5700 it slows considerably.
The interior is well done. It does not feel cheesy or anything. The seats are relatively grippy. My car has the whole air, PW, PL, but no Power steering (which is not a problem because there is very little weight over the wheels). Most cars seem to have most of these options. The controls are all well laid out.
This car is reliable too. In the year and a half I have owned it the only difficulties I have run into are ignition related (i.e. wires, rotor, cap, and distributor seals) all of which are relatively cheap to fix under a hundred for all of it. Plus when you factor in the car now has 130,000 miles it is amazing.
NOTE: don't buy it if you have a family. Don't by it if you live where there is a lot of snow (small amounts it can get through) and don't by it if you want dirt cheap insurance. But EVERYONE else and some who fall into the previous categories should own one. I highly recommend it!

I have never owned or driven a car that even compares for the price. If you have the money the turbo is amazing though. It is most often compared to the Mazda Miata though.

Model Reviewed: MR2 Turbo

Strength:

Smooooooth and fasssssssst! Solid, fun, and the most enjoyable red flash on the road!

Weakness:

Reverse gear is a bit notchy.

I have owned four Mister Two's--two in each incarnation. The 1991 turbo is much more powerful and refined than the 1985-86 original, but there really IS a certain ambience about that older model. That's why I own it too! The
1991 turns heads everywhere.....still! Yesterday, someone thought it was the new Spyder. It's relatively inexpensive to maintain, but be SURE to change that timing belt. It'll set you back nearly half a grand, but this car is worth it. I wax mine once a month or more--just the joy of doing it more than anything else. What's more, unlike other sports cars in the genre, the electronic antenna works and keeps working! Be sure to put soft puppie tires on this baby--the smooth ride makes a difference. Trunk room? Well, if you have to ask, you shouldn't be looking for a sports car anyway. Stereo and CD units sound great with the numerous speakers. Gas mileage is good....other than that notchy reverse gear, I can't find anything bad say about the car. The turbo has caused zero problems, and she will run on 91 octane. Would I buy a fifth MR2? You bettcha!!!

Model Reviewed: MR2 non-turbo

Strength:

The looks. It looks sporty and runs great. There's no other car like it for this kind of price. The non-turbo is quicker than people give it credit for. I think this car is a lot quicker than a Civic EX or an Integra LS or GS. I've beaten a few of those in my lifetime. The stock sound system is a lot better than most stock systems. It's a 2-seater. You don't have to drive all of your friends when you go out.

Weakness:

The stock cd player doesn't play most recorded cd's. It's extremely hard to find aftermarket performance parts for a non-turbo MR2. It's a lot easier to find MR2 turbo performance parts.

I would recommend anyone to buy a non-turbo MR2 anyday. It also comes in an automatic so you don't have to worry about shifting gears. Everyone looks at you when you drive it because this car is rare. Don't go out and get those common cars like a Civic or an Integra, get an MR2. It's also a lot cheaper.

Its a Toyota Heart pounding Power 3sgte(2.0) I drve the Camry engine one(2.2) and Its a joy too.
There is a sort of erie effect that any year mr2 will give you, its sort of a very fun car to drive it scares you but yet embraces you with a feeling of safety. Taking turns if fun Very fun in these vehicles especilly the 80's mr2s you feel as If your going to skid out but jerk the sterring wheel further into a turn and it follows right through. Ive owned enough mr2s and have sold 2 in my lifetime 90's are better refined but they arent as fun as the 80's (simplistic and easy) but they too are a joy to drive. Nothing beats the way these cars rev and rev and ask for more, their exhuast note is a delight to the ears reaching almost 8000 revs not bad for an engine from the 80's A very fast car and still the only car filling its nitche as present. Ive driven many cars supras,rx7,talons,vr4 and they all are great but a mr2 does it all perfect I love my 88 supercharged mr2 kept all stock it still puts a smile on my face my other mr2s are not stock at all.

Weakness:

Not enough to make them bad, small trunk, 2 seater, thin leater used, not many around so aftermarket parts are rare they mk2's are very expensive to set up

Yes Yes Yes Fast, Reliable, But most important fun you will never find a MR2 owner sell thier car why? Day after day of fun and memories. The name speaks for itself .... PERIOD!

Strength:

Acceleration, handling, turbo-lag is minumal...I love everything about this car.

Weakness:

mid-engine, rwd design chews up rear tires quickly.

These cars are perfect for someone want a lot of performance/$. They are very reliable, they turn heads everywhere, and the stock block/heads/crank can easily handle 25-50% while maintaning reliability.

In stock form, i was constantly blowing the doors off of Mustang GT 5.0/4.6L...After I upgraded the intercooler, turbocharger, Air Intake/filter, and exhuast, I was beating Cobra mustangs. SS camaro/ws6 Trans-Ams were a close race. My point is, with minor modifications, MR2 turbo's will BOOGIE

resale is killer, too. I just turned down an offer of $11,000 for my 93 turbo MR2

Strength:

- Mid-engine. Awesome handling (pre-93 model may be a little tricky but still handles great once you get familiar with it).
- Great torque and horsepower (turbo).
- Good quality. Very solid. Hand-assembly in Yamaha facility.
- Large aftermarket part selection.
- Affordable. Good resell price too.

Weakness:

- Small trunk space. I rather have an average-size trunk or no trunk at all but a larger engine in it.
- Tire selection is tricky. Very hard to find a 15" tire that is 225mm wide. Getting a set of 16" (or 17" for turbo) makes your life easier.
- Aftermarket parts for this car are relatively expensive.

You can't find a better car at the price. Great power and handling, and it's fun to drive. Unlike many FWD sports coupes in the market, this car is in GT300 race competing with RX7, 911, F355, etc. You can never go wrong with this car.

This car handles really well. The mid-engine position and driver layout lead to tremendous control.

Needs a higher 5th gear or a 6th. Top end is limited for highway driving.

For the money, this car is hard to beat.

Model Reviewed: Mk2 Turbo

Strength:

This is the greatest car i have ever owned. I am thirty years old and feel like a schoolkid with a new xmas toy. I have owned 20 cars in my relatively short driving life, my previous car being a horrific Vauxhall Calibra turbo. The MR2 eats everything in its path, I dont feel anything could keep up with it. Stereo system is fabulous.

Weakness:

MPH conversion only goes up to 100?, CD player doesn't like CDR's.

If you are reading this with the intention of buying a turbo 2 then read no further. Reach for your cheque book and buy. I cannot express my delight about this car, it's truly outstanding. The greatest thing is that in Britain the turbo's are so rare, we never got a turbo from Toyota so having an import was the only way to go. I paid £5495 for it (about $8k) and it's worth every penny. It has amazing spec, utterly shattering performance, hell I feel like Sonny Crockett driving round Miami in my white machine. Anybody seen Tubbs?!!
