Toyota MR2 Sports

DESCRIPTION

The Toyota MR2 is a mid engined, rear-wheel drive, 2-seater sports car manufactured by Toyota Motors Corporation of Japan. Mark I, II and III are the three commonly known generations of MR2. The Mark I or the first generation is produced from 1985 to 1989. It uses two types of engine such as the normally aspirated version manufactured from 1985-1989 and the supercharged version produced from 1985-1989.

Produced from 1990-1995 and extended until 1999 for Japan and other countries is the second generation MR2 or the Mark II. It comes equipped with two engine versions, the normally aspirated manufactured from 1990-1995 and the turbocharged produced from 1990-1995. The third generation or Mark III commonly known as the MR2 Spyder is considered as the first convertible model. It is produced from 2000 with its normally aspirated and turbocharged engine version. Its classic creation is better known to be boosted by MR2 Toyota Parts. Fit, precise, and top-quality are the distinct characteristics of these parts.

Strength:

Superb handling. Decent horsepower and delivers about 33 miles per gallon. Looks absolutely gorgeous. Extremely reliable.

Weakness:

Not much room for suitcases, but better than most in the 2 seater category.

I paid about $6k for this a few months back and have not regretted it once. If you are considering an MR2 purchase I suggest GO FOR IT.

This is my second MR2, the first was an '88 Supercharged -- the '91 has a more refined feel to it, sacrificing a tiny bit of the older models' "tossability." Also had an '88 Fiero GT (no comparison to the MR2) and several Mustangs (these aren't even in a similar category so I won't compare).

Strength:

Great styling, responsive handling.
Good acceleration at cruising speeds.

Weakness:

None

This is the most fun-to-drive car I've ever owned. Its point-and-shoot personality coupled with its ease of acceleration at crusing speeds make every trip a blast. The Gen2 MR2s are rarer now since production in the US stopped by '95, but it still gets a few head-turns wherever it goes. And it looks so nice even when parked.

A used '91 turbo in great condition can be had for less than $10k.

Strength:

Performance, handling, reliability, comfort, looks. That slick gearchange and perfectly weighted steering. Economy isn't too bad either.

Weakness:

Not much, the oil for the supercharger is *expensive*, at $106 (US$53) for half a litre! Just as well I know the service manager at one of the local Toyota dealerships :)

I paid $4500 for it, with 140,000 kms on the clock. It has had a new clutch, new seals, gaskets and all belts replaced within the last 2000 kms. I've since put new Dunlop 901s on it along with new KYB shocks and lowered (by 30mm) King springs. If you like driving at all you'll love this!

A word of warning - NEVER lift off the throttle in mid-corner, especially if it's wet, or you may find your rear bumper trying to overtake you at a great rate of knots, even at a reasonable speed as it can catch you unawares. (I did this in my old Alfa and it was absolutely controllable).
You'll break the speed-limit barrier in second gear, so a decent radar detector might pay.

By the way, these cars were never available new in NZ (all are used imports from Japan), so no workshop manuals or handbooks can be found here.
Does anyone know where I can find one (I'm told they must be sourced from the US)? Please email me if you can.

Model Reviewed: Toyota MR2 Turbo

Strength:

This car is a strong contender right out of the box, in stock form. It is VERY easy to upgrade the engine to make a lot more power than stock. 250 reliable rear wheel horsepower is a very attainable number. (stock RWHP is 165) Strong support from the International MR2 Owner's Club (IMOC) Home page is www.mr2.com

Weakness:

Since the car has not been imported into North America for 5 years now, it's getting hard to find a good example, and hard to find competent mechanics to work on them.

I paid $13,000 for the car, and would recommend it to anyone.

The 93 Turbo is THE year to have. The biggest improvements to the car were made this year, but there were still quite a few imported for 93. The 94 and 95 while more desirable from a collector's standpoint, are corrspondingly harder to obtain.

Strength:

Where do I start? Just consider everything about this car a strength. It's sheer motoring perfection. Nothing else needs to be said

Weakness:

Some people find it hard to handle, but I don't see any problems. I hear the 91' and 92's have more understear.

If you like sports cars than get it. Thats all I can say. You can get a 91' for 5 grand. Just do it!!!!

Strength:

Handling, Power, Comfort (leather,A/C, cruise, etc.), Looks, Rareity

Weakness:

Performance parts are a little harder (and priced higher) to find...

Paid 3500.00 ... performs (usually better) and looks like vehicles costing 8 times as much ... 75,000 miles on the odometer when I bought it ...

I would whole-heartedly reccommend to any/all car lovers to test drive one if available ... You WILL want one ...

As much as I hate to admit it, I kinda like blasting down straight-aways and through twisty curves with the A/C chilling and stereo playing, etc.

EVERYTHING! This is a super car with so much to love. Good looking, quick, great control layout and placement. Easy to maintain. Handles like it's on rails. Two trunks, actually a lot of storage space, enough for 1 person anyways. Two seats. This means you don't get stuck hauling all your friends around when you go out.

Weakness:

NOTHING!

I paid $4800 in the summer of 98, w/ 109K miles. The car is in imaculate condition. Absolutly flawless interior, and only 2 small "door dings" on the rear right quarter panel.
Very solid, no rattles or squeeks, very tight.
I would definatly reccommend this car to anyone who wants a true sports car w/ amazing handling. Super choice for a "weekend" car. Not geared towards families or anyone who's into moving large pieces of furniture on a regular basis. You can find great deals on these wonderful cars if you look around and believe me you'll be happy.

Strength:

Here's an oxymoron for you -- ECONOMICAL SPORTS CAR. You can tear up the road in this thing and still get 22 MPG. The performance of this car is astounding!!

Weakness:

I knew what I was getting. This car is not for everyone, but if you want to haul-ass, piss people off as you roar past them and generally have a blast driving, this car is definitely worth a look.

I'm going to give you guys a comprehensive review, so sit back and read! By the way, PLEASE DO contact me if you are into cars whatsoever.

I love the Pontiac TRANS AM, but I can't afford it yet!

First of all, I got this car with 185,000+ miles on it. It took me about 1 second to decide to buy it. I plopped down $2300 and drove off. Since then, I have been nothing but happy!!

Peformance: If you wanna race, you will get a good look at the tail lights!

The 88 and 89 model year MR2s were the only ones with superchargers. Newer ones have turbo chargers. Anyhow, this little thing cranks out about 145 HP and 140 Ft-Lbs of torque, which is plenty of power to get up to 60 in about 6-7 seconds. I haven't tried a quarter mile run, so I can't tell you about that.

I have not modified this vehicle in any way, however I do plan to add an HKS super power flow air intake -- the stock exhaust on this car is fairly adequate! It is a 1.6L engine, it doesn't need a wind tunnel for exhaust! If you do get a modified exhaust, check out the Nology exhaust regulators -- it will give you back a lot of your low-end torque by adding back pressure at lower engine speeds!!

Handling: I didn't know the roads were made from fly paper! This thing sticks, even with worn tires!!

By placing the engine in the the middle of the chassis, the weight is more evenly distributed on all 4 wheels and handling becomes more predictable. I find a more solid feeling to taking turns. The car does not seem to be drifting as much. I have a strut tower brace on this, and that helps keep the car stiff.

The power assist for the steering is just right, so you can feel the road enough to know what to do next. It's handy when you are racing some dork in a Civic who spent $5000 on stickers and a custom paint job. heh heh heh

I have a potpourri of tires on this car now, but I will most likely buy 4 Dunlop D-60S for it, seeing as how they are a great value, and that there already are 2 D-60s on the rear. They have awesome grip even though they are really worn!!

Comfort: Two seats...just me and my woman.

Unless you have a family or a need to drive an SUV for all that 'off roading' you do, this car is excellent! Some will say that two seats are not enough. I say, "Can you really fit in those seats in a Trans AM or Eclipse?" Gumby says "Yes!" as he folds himself in and pokey soon follows...everyone else just looks away and kicks some sand. My point exactly.

This MR2 has a small trunk in the back and a storage space in the front where the spare tire is. You can fit some groceries in the trunk, about 5 paper bags. By scrapping the rear seats, there is more room for the driver and passenger to stretch out! It's very relaxing.

The T-TOPS don't leak if you rub something like "Son of a Gun" protectant on them once in a while. And driving with them off is very very very....it's like....you just have to do it!

Well, that's about all! I hope you find this helpful in some way! I think these consumer review sites are really great, I hope it catches on more so there are more reviews!

Strength:

styling, reliability, road holding and feel, fit and finish, overall a great ride.

Weakness:

little under powered(even with added intake, ignition, and exhaust systems) linkage is a little weak, but vastly improved by Redline tranny fluid; nothing short of amazing.

Bought it from my brother with about 95 thousand on the tach, for $5,000. Now it's got about 115,000 on the clock and still runs very smoothly, I've added a few trick parts, intake tubing that sticks into the side vent a lot more, threw on some larger wheels and lower profile tires on white Ronal wheels to contrast the black... always a head turner.
Car is still a bit under powered, but I believe future nitrous upgrades will allow for humiliation of the local Domestic iron. Car is just a blast, I just wish I could afford the insurance for a Turbo model.. but alas, I'm 18.
