Toyota MR2 Sports

DESCRIPTION

The Toyota MR2 is a mid engined, rear-wheel drive, 2-seater sports car manufactured by Toyota Motors Corporation of Japan. Mark I, II and III are the three commonly known generations of MR2. The Mark I or the first generation is produced from 1985 to 1989. It uses two types of engine such as the normally aspirated version manufactured from 1985-1989 and the supercharged version produced from 1985-1989.

Produced from 1990-1995 and extended until 1999 for Japan and other countries is the second generation MR2 or the Mark II. It comes equipped with two engine versions, the normally aspirated manufactured from 1990-1995 and the turbocharged produced from 1990-1995. The third generation or Mark III commonly known as the MR2 Spyder is considered as the first convertible model. It is produced from 2000 with its normally aspirated and turbocharged engine version. Its classic creation is better known to be boosted by MR2 Toyota Parts. Fit, precise, and top-quality are the distinct characteristics of these parts.

I got my 93 turbo for $13,800 and have been pleased with it so far.I have done many mods to it already and hope to get 300+hp to the wheels. So far I am at about 230 to the wheels and it hauls ass!.The T-Tops are a huge bonus and the driving position is one of the best I have ever seen in any car.Fit and finish are typical Toyota which is awesome, and I have never had a problem with it. I think everyone should get a 93+ turbo. What are you waiting for GET ONE!

Power, handling, quality, finish, reliability, etc, etc, etc

Weakness:

Stock wheels

I've had my Turbo '2 for a bit over a year now and my only concern with it is that someday I might have to part with it. I found an amazing deal; a garaged '95 with 16k on the clock for about 18k one year ago. The '95 is a very rare car and I feel has many improvements over the original Mk II's. I have not had one moment of regret in the purchase, and have had many many moments of sheer pleasure with this automobile.

While the NA models may be a little weak, the MR2 in turbo trim is a world class sports machine, an absolute bargain for the price. This car will match or beat the performance numbers of a Porsche Boxter for 1/2 the price, and gives up nothing in style, comfort, or quality. Sure, I don't have the fancy name recognition of the German car for example, but I also don't have the ridiculous price tag associated with maintaining the German vehicle. But I don't care if people are impressed when my car is sitting still, I care about myself being impressed on the open road.

The MR2 is truly the best of all worlds. At 200HP and 200FtLbs of torque it's got enough push to run with the best of them. It has brakes that will stop on a dime and give you change for lunch. I replaced the stock 15x7 wheels (the cars only mistake from the factory) with a set of 17x8's (17x7 front) shod with Bridgestone S0-2 rubber and the car will now defy gravity on a highway offramp or a mountain road. When I am on a mountain road the car handles like a go cart and I routinely find myself being held up by and waiting to pass even crotch rocket motorcycles. The leather interior has exceptionally comfortable seats (all my passengers have commented such), an 8 speaker stereo that - while some hard core audiophiles I'm sure will have issue - can play boom-boom with the kids in slammed Civics or hit the high notes in a symphony. I'm 6' 4" tall and have more room in this car than any I've driven. The trunk, unlike other small sportsters and rear engined cars, is cavernous. I once fit 2 scuba tanks, 2 wet suits, snorkels, fins, weighs and the rest it takes for an underwater excursion plus weekend bags for two people in the trunk of my '2. I even get 30 mpg on the highway (assuming I can keep my foot out of the Turbo).

These cars were hand built with exceptional quality. I drove a number of them while searching for mine and even the 100k plus mileage cars that had been abused were still rock solid in the body. Very good fit and finish. I think the Toyota name to many people means Japanese econo car and that puts the MR2, to those uninformed souls, in a highly underrated position. Toyota to me means quality and reliability. The car now has 36k on it now (I can't stop driving it) and has had no issues with it mechanically whatsoever, save a squeaky pad on the left rear brake. My regularly scheduled 30k service cost a mere $200 (including the brake anti-squeal compound). The CD player started behaving oddly and was replaced under warranty.

I know of no other package that will give you reliability, world class performance figures, mid engine balance, exceptional comfort, and not require you to mortgage the kids. If you are looking for a car with that description, I can't recommend the MR2 highly enough.

Every time I see a Porsche Boxter on the road I just grin to myself knowingly, punch the gas, and feel the turbo push me into my fine leather seat as I pass them.

Strength:

Styling, reliability, handling, gas mileage.

Weakness:

None.

My MR. Two arrived May 25, 1990 (yes, Marque II body style and model year 1991). Together, we are approaching 10 years and 95,000 miles of motoring bliss together. I purchased the car for $18,500 ($19,700 MSRP). The car has always turned heads, and even now people think it is a new car ... yes, I have maintained the car to perfection. Everything from the cars styling, the joy of t-topping, to throwing it into the curves has been a complete joy for me. Toyota's build quality and reliability has been incredible! Since taking the helm of this car, my only repairs have been: replacing a shift cable ($340), an alternator ($200), 6 tires, and replacing brake pads (at 67,000 miles!). Little to no problems and tons of enjoyment! I've loved this car and highly recomend it to anyone!

Strength:

Won't find a better handling sports car at this price

Weakness:

Fifth gear could be a litter higher. Could use more power

This car has excellent road feel. It is tight around corners, just like a mid engined sports car should be. At 112 hp, it could use more, but that can be remedied with the factory supercharger that was available in the '88 and '89 models. As with any older car, there will be little problems, but if the car was taken care of there shouldn't be anything to worry about. When shopping for a car, I was torn between the similarly priced rx-7, but chose the mr2 for its superb handling capabilities. All in all, I have been very happy with this car.

Strength:

Good handling, solid construction, roomy for a 2 seater

Weakness:

Needs more HP, engine a little rough, buzzy on the highway

Nice car, fun to drive, and roomy for a 2 seater. Overall reliability was good, although I had my valve seals go at about 70k, but it was all fixed under warrantee. The front end felt a little light and the car had a tendency to drift a little on the highway. I wish they had geared 5th a little taller for highway cruising as the car got buzzy above 60mph.
Didn't have the solid steering feel of my VW, felt a little disconnected in terms of road feel. Overall a nice car though.

looks... especially when its red and newly washed. speed is for turbo and handling for the n/a. the n/a can be converted to a 3a-ge engine with 170 horses( close of becoming a turbo , eh?) just add a header from japan and can reach 200 or a bit more with no more buying a turbo and that annoying swooshing blow off valve! can turn lanes easy in traffic. everybody ask about your car and gets a lot of complements! A WOMAN CATCHER!

Weakness:

tire wear off easy in the rear. a bad luck car coz every cop hate you. makes you spend extra to buy a radar. if you are to friendly, cant take more than 1 passenger. high cost of repair ( if you like racing it hard and mess it up, youll end to be one!) other than those.. this car is supreme next to supra!

This car is the most awesome japanese car around lesser than that of a supra price.. its got the 348 - 355 ferrari look that is really catchy is everyone's eyes. i can beat any modified racing looking hondas just with my stock looking newly painted cherry red body but with aftermarket racing hart c-5 wheels( 17x 10 rear!) and a 5" dual exhaust tip!. my car may just be automatic but to hec with that! im not a racer but i just want to look like a racer. all i care about is to pick up women! and this car will do all the works for you! hondas are common and for cheap pocketed teenagers! dont be fooled by so much of thesame class of cars you see around the streets! get an mr2 and youll see how much attention youll get from it! mechanical wise, i have no problem with this 10 year old car. yes, its true 5-sfe engine suck but not much compared to a turbo. turbos are great but if you dont know how to drive one properly , it could spun you out and get you into serious damage. t-top suck coz you hear every air throw of your blow off valve. my is fully hard top and i feel im driving a true japanese spec mr2. t-tops were made for the american version. aftermarket support lacks for the n/a mr2 but if you are in the looks so and so of it are available in japan and europe! not much of american aftermarket support coz everybody thinks they can make more money selling honda crap since its the most common! dont be sorry for getting an mr2 ,,, in japan " IT IS A GOLDEN CAR!" and it's " japan's ferrari!" full support is available in japan and for japanese, honda will always be a motorcycle! dont be a snut nose punk teenager ricer.. be a matured adult RACER! GET THE MR2!

Weakness:

*few, no trunk and passangers do not like its agility and hard suspension... whatever!!!

One of the nicest, most well behaved, yet SO FUN!!! cars.
I had driven almost every sports and sports-like car on the US market and this is one of the best. Handling and the overall driver experience is hard to describe. The non-turbo could use 10-50 more HP but make no mistake even with the 135HP it's fun! it's not just the speed, but the overall feel that just can not be replicated. Like Acura NSX, yea maybe some would argue these are not to be compared, but for 40K i can have 1 NSX and 4 MR2's...heck even for 25K i would still go with mr 2

Weakness:

Storage Room, Not for the inexperienced driver

The MR2 is a great overall car (except for the storage space). It has great style and handling and it's a blast to drive in the city. However, you do have to be careful w/ snap oversteer because of its rear wheel, mid engined setup. You have to get use to it before you drive it hard. It's not like driving a Civic. This car is probably the best, affordable sports car you can buy.

Strength:

Handling is everything. The car has absolutely superb handling, and 4 wheel disc brakes give it impressive stopping ability. This car is pure pleasure behind the wheel. Its a Toyota, so it has very good reliability too.

Weakness:

Snap oversteer causes a lot of accidents for poor and inexperienced drivers. Be careful and learn how to drive the car properly. The car has only 2 seats, so make sure you dont like to carry lots of people/stuff.

The Toyota MR2 is not just one of the most beautiful cars on the road today. It also has incredible handling due to its mid engined, rear wheel drive setup. I have beat Porsche 911s and Vettes on the track... so that gives you an example of just how good the handling is. The car is not designed for straight line acceleration or top speed, so if you live for the dragstrip you are wasting its abilities. The car is not only great looking on the outside, but it has a great interior too. Very elegant, yet functional. As you can tell, I LOVE my car.
