DESCRIPTION

The Toyota MR2 is a mid engined, rear-wheel drive, 2-seater sports car manufactured by Toyota Motors Corporation of Japan. Mark I, II and III are the three commonly known generations of MR2. The Mark I or the first generation is produced from 1985 to 1989. It uses two types of engine such as the normally aspirated version manufactured from 1985-1989 and the supercharged version produced from 1985-1989.

Produced from 1990-1995 and extended until 1999 for Japan and other countries is the second generation MR2 or the Mark II. It comes equipped with two engine versions, the normally aspirated manufactured from 1990-1995 and the turbocharged produced from 1990-1995. The third generation or Mark III commonly known as the MR2 Spyder is considered as the first convertible model. It is produced from 2000 with its normally aspirated and turbocharged engine version. Its classic creation is better known to be boosted by MR2 Toyota Parts. Fit, precise, and top-quality are the distinct characteristics of these parts.

Strength:

Power, looks, Handling, Toyota reliability (despite my problems, it is a turbocharged 200 hp 4 cylinder with a lot of miles and runs strong.)

Weakness:

Expensive repairs, especially waterpump or timing belt. as they have to pull the engine, (800 bucks for the waterpump), Insurance rates if you are under 25 (mine was 240 a month for full coverage, I looked on the web at insweb.com and they got me full coverage for 120 a month, still a lot, I turn 25 in 6 months, I can't wait) oversteer in wet weather.

Well, I previously owned a 1986 mr2 and loved it, until A minivan totaled it. I took my money and put it down on the only turbo mr2 I could find. Drove it off the lot and it overheated, BAD. SO I took it back to the dealer furious, and they had it for 2 weeks, and finally I got it back. IT had blown a headgasket, which they paid for the repair. Then I had 7 months of blissful, trouble free driving. Great accelaration, handling, etc. Then I started overheating again. Replaced the water pump and radiator cap, as well as a new thermostat, and that fixed the issue. Have had a few more issues with overheating mildly, but only in hot (95+ weather), going uphill. I bought the car with 114,000 miles on it, so I expected some problems, and now have 139,000 miles on it as I drive a lot. When it is running well, It is the best car I have ever driven, and when it is not, I swear I am going to trade it in. I almost have twice, but couldn't bring myself to do it. I have read some other reviews of this car having overheating problems, I guess it is related to the mid engine design. I would reccommend this car to anyone looking for an inexpensive sports car. I now plan to keep it as long as I have the need for speed. And plan on adding an air scoop and new intercooler to help keep temperatures down.

Strength:

Visual appeal--the new Mark 3 looks like a little Fiat and has zero artistic quality. The fit and finish is Toyota + which means excellent. The 5 speed is good but somewhat vague from 2nd to 3rd. Handling is also outstanding and the ride comfort is far from jarring. The storage is excellent compared with the Mark 3 which ranks as the seventh worst car ever designed for lack of space to put things. The seating is also outstanding--I am 6-2 and fit easily.

Weakness:

The NA version is underpowered. The red paint fades--needs a clearcoat.

Always wanted one of these machines based on looks and Toyota reputation for perfection in finish. Found a red example with only 39k at my local dealer and probably paid too much due to inability to hide excitement. This car in red comes close to a Ferrari in visual appeal although the NA version is underpowered and apparently poorly supported by Toyota TRD for performance parts. It needs at least 50 more hp which may require custom headers and perhaps some valve work which may render it smog illegal. The handling is superb and never ceases to bring joy when losing unweildly SUV's lurching on the corners trying to keep up! If I could afford it, I would probably fit a Turbo engine and boost the hp to 25o.

Once owned an E-Type and Aston DB6--I thinbk the MR2 beats both although it is hard to compare.

Strength:

Power, Refinement, every detail has been overengineered. For those of you unfamiliar with Toyota, their attention to detail is unsurpassed. The aesthetics appeal of the car was also a major factor for me. The term "japense ferrari" really does sum it up!!

Weakness:

Hmmm.. lets see. I suppose you could say that there isn't much interior space & there's only room for 1 set of golf clubs in the trunk; but one would not buy the MR2 for is practicality.. I also feel that the 2 would have been better off with 16" alloys as opposed to the factory 15"s (the 91 + 92's came with 14"s!!). The tire width is adequate at 225, but 235's would be an improvement.

Well, I guess I'll add one more review to this list which seems huge already. What can I say that hasn't been said already. My 93 Turbo is a phenominal car! I have already owned 3 mid-engine sports cars before this MR.2: 2 Fiero's (one 4cy se & 1 6cy GT) & and a 1988 Supercharged Mr2. The two Fiero's had fantastic styling & visual appeal, unfortunatley, the powerplant & electronics were definatley lacking. However, they did teach valuable lessons in mechanics, from neccessity. The 88SC was was a thorougly enjoyable car but lacked the refinment of my current 93-turbo.

Similar Products Used:

Difficult to compare b/c it was discontinued in 1995, but I would say it's rivals would be: Mitsubishi/Eagle GSX(GS-t)/Tsi twins, 3rd Gen. Rx7 tt's, & the ever popular Mustang GT's.
As far as the diamond star-twins go, the Mr2's powerplant is much more reliable which is evident by high-maintenace reputation of most Eclipse's. The Rx-7 is undoubtedly faster than the 2 (255hp 0-60 4.9 compared to 200hp 0-60 in 6.3), however, the rotary engine's longterm performance is at best questionable. As far the Mustangs go..they do have the raw horsepower, but these domestic cars are so common that most jap-enthusiasts would never give one a 2nd glance (besides, in my experience, most can't keep up anyway...lol :)
Hope this has been helpful to any potential buyers!!!

THERE IS NO OTHER CAR (ENGINE&TRANSMISSION)THAT WILL LAST 20K MILES BEEING DRIVEN THE WAY I DROVE THIS CAR .8000RPM GEAR SHIFTING(WONT GO OVER 8000 CAUSE OF THE ELECTRONIC SHUT OFF)NOT EVEN A FERRARI(YOU WILL NOT TREAT A FERRARI THIS WAY)FOR 500 DOLLARS I HAD AND I STILL HAVE THE BEST TIME WHEN I DRIVE

Weakness:

ENDLESS SPEEDING AND UNSAFE LANE CHANGE TICKETS

well outstanding:-i bought the car at 200k miles!!!!!!it was september, the car was in a junk condition(dusty, smelly, steering wheel was coming apart, the exhaust was gone etc)never noticed one on the road before.i liked it from the moment i sat in it. i noticed the short distance between the shifter and the steering wheel, then the 7500rpm redline.i try to start it the batery is dead, the guy from the dealership jumpstarts it and it starts right up,the noise was incredible(the pipe after the headder was cut in two)i drove the car one mile and i just bought it.
it's been almost an year (3 more days left)and this car is unbeliveble
it has 223000 miles now and all i have done to the car was to put a new set of rims and tires.i did all to this car:pizza delivery ,red line shifting,80mph hiway exiting ,all kind of stunts-I CAN NOT KILL THIS CAR!!!
IT IS AMAZING HOW THIS CAR WON'T GIVE UP!!!!!THE TOYOTAS ENGINES AND 5 SPEED TRANSMISIONS ARE THE BEST!!!
my brother bought one and he invested a lot of money in ground effects and all kinds of apparel:-DON'T DO THAT , DONT NEED IT!!!
