BMW X5 (2010 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The X5 represents BMW's first foray into the popular sport-utility-vehicle marketplace. Billed as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" by its maker, the X5 is designed to handle like a true BMW. The redesigned X5 is longer than its predecessor and features a third-row seat that is best for kids only. The ride is still stiff and choppy, but handling is capable and secure. Both the six- and eight-cylinder engines are powerful. The shift lever and iDrive driver-interaction system are both needlessly complicated.

Strength:

A fun, stylish utility vehicle. After 3 years in a Land Rover Disco, I was perplexed as to my next vehicle. I wanted a versatile vehicle with bad weather/condition capability and a little zip. Another SUV? A quattro-type sedan? The BMW gave me both.

Weakness:

Pod like appearance. It looks like a Lexus/minivan/family truckster. With the Land Rover, I was used to a boxy truck. This is no lumbering Rover.

This is the best vehicle I have ever owned. It is expensive, but you will be repaid each time you take it on the road.

Similar Products Used:

Land Rover Disco, Toyota Landcruiser, Acura MDX.
Disco and Landcruiser - better off-road than the BMW, but I prefer the much better on-road handling and speed of the BMW. Acura MDX - UGLY and built on a mini-van frame - enough said.

Strength:

Handling, cornering, style.

Weakness:

The rims always needs cleaning after driving and the doors do not automatically lock when in motion.

This is a vehicle that gets attention. Handling is great, exactly what you would expect from a BMW, however acceleration is not as smooth as I had expected, you have to floor the gas pedal inorder to get the car going. For this kind of price the car sell itself, it is at the top of the SUV/SAV chain, the M-Class has more room, but this car has more class. If you can afford one its well worth it, I suggest waiting for the 2002 Models so all the kinks have been worked out by BMW, although I have had no problems with the car, so far. The interior fits like a glove, a little small if your a big guy, but perfect for those of avg. height.

Strength:

Excellent handling and smooth power delivery, goes even better when pushed.Take it to the limit and you get the electronics to take over.

Weakness:

None as yet

If you want two cars in one then this is the one. Take a BMW 540 and add a Range Rover, liquidise and you get an X5, not bad value. We have had some terrible rain in the UK recently, so I tried mine in the mud. The electronics took over and I wasn't sure whether I was driving it or not. It came through the mud and felt sure footed, I intend to try more off road ventures. Wheels are a swine to clean. Feedback welcome.

Strength:

POWER & HANDLING! To drive this vehicle the way it is meant to be driven means you can never be satisfied with any other SUV/SAV. Seriously, it preforms so much better than anything else in its class that everything else means you are settling for less!

Weakness:

It has had quite a number of minor electrical glitches but I have had them fixed quickly without a dealer hesitation. The cargo area is somewhat small but have never not been able to get everything in it that I wanted. Fuel mileage could be better but when you consider its weight and performance it is quite good.

It is expensive, if you have trouble with that you my never be able to fully enjoy driving it. You only get one life (as far as I know for sure)and if you are fortunate enough to be able to afford to enjoy it this is the SUV/SAV for you.

Lexus 470 & RX 300, MDX, MB 430, Lincoln & Cadillac. The X5 out preforms, and out handles them all by such a large margin that they are absolutely boring by comparison.

Strength:

Handling, acceleration and exterior are excellent!

Weakness:

Interior is poor, huge red alarm lamp on the rear view mirror makes me think I'm driving an ambulance, Navigation system is VERY bad. I also have some problems with the cargo door looks: it will be 3rd attempt to fix them next week.

I didn't expect such a bad Navigation System from BMW. I'm also tempted to kick that red lamp off the rear view mirror as it always in front of my eyes when I drive. But this car is still fun to drive.

Strength:

Handling, styling, acceleration and comfort.

Weakness:

Reliability. Had the car 2 days and find out the windshield defogger doesn't work. Car has been in the shop for 7 days so far. Waiting for parts.

As it is big embarressment for me spent that kind of money and only drove it for 2 days. I would not recommend this car until BMW work out the problem.

Strength:

I purchased the V6 because it has PLENTY of power, especially at the lower range (good torque). The car (this is NOT a truck!) is fantastic--great handling, great looks, power, great interior styling, etc...

Weakness:

None, except some would say price. My feeling is, if you can't afford it you just shouldn't be buying it.

I highly recommend this vehicle to those who can afford it. Any other "sport utility vehicle" simply rides like a truck compared to this car. Makes the Ford Explorer look and feel like a pickup truck. BMW was correct to call it a "sport activity vehicle" because this is in a class of its own. I don't call it my SUV, because the connotation simply doesn't apply. If you want a luxury sport sedan which rides high for great visibility and has extra space--this is the car for you. GREAT JOB BMW!!

Owned a Grand Cherokee Limited, which is garbage compared to this car. Test drove Mercedes and Lexus, both of which are ok, but NONE compared to this amazing vehicle.

Strength:

Solid, responsive and a blast at 125mph. Will take it up to 135mph if I get the opportunity. The 12-speaker stereo rocks.

Weakness:

Rear wiper plastic mounting bolt cover falls off easily.

Paid $54K, It is an awesome feeling when driving it and road-trips are very comfortable. Although SAV will not be an acronym that will catch on, I think BMW did the right thing in differentiating themselves from the others. The X5 is DIFFERENT and you will love it. If you can spare the $10K for the 4.4-liter, buy it. Otherwise, the 3.0-liter is perfectly geared.

Makes driving a true pleasure; Best looking SUV/SAV around; Typical BMW feel and ride, PERFECT!!! Attention to details is incredible. Great warranty. Dealer's service and support staff is very helpfull

Weakness:

Small load space. Very little room in center console. Little pricey due to shortage and demand of vehicle.

The salesperson was great even though the dealer wouldn't budge on the price. There was absolutely no negotiating. Had to order the car from the factory but was well worth the wait! I am extremely happy with my purchase and would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a mid-size SUV with sports car handling. Gave car a 4 star value rating due to the full MSRP I paid. I will update review from time to time if anything goes wrong but so far, PERFECT!

The handling is very good, a wide space on the inside.

Weakness:

Blinkers broken on the second day, a heavy car.
Heavy steering wheel.

I'd recommend to wait for 2002, till all small problems are solved.
Buy the V8 4.4, which is faster and stronger.
