BMW X5 (2010 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The X5 represents BMW's first foray into the popular sport-utility-vehicle marketplace. Billed as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" by its maker, the X5 is designed to handle like a true BMW. The redesigned X5 is longer than its predecessor and features a third-row seat that is best for kids only. The ride is still stiff and choppy, but handling is capable and secure. Both the six- and eight-cylinder engines are powerful. The shift lever and iDrive driver-interaction system are both needlessly complicated.

Strength:

Engine. Ride. Handling. Looks.

Weakness:

Seat needs a lombar. Sunroof wind noise at certain speeds. Gas milage. Cost. Had the first service done, and the oil was NEVER changed!

This is the best car I have ever owned...I am 40. The ride, handling, and engine are sound and stable. On the hwy, at 70 or 80, it is almost like sitting still.

Strength:

Engine performance, looks, handling and braking are amazing.

Weakness:

Poor quality. Car has died on highway. Front ball joints replaced. Temperature control replaced. Doors freeze shut or can''t be closed. Rear latch is flaky. Sunroof road noise is high. Windshield pump replaced. Seat-belt retraction mechanisms are sticky. Minimal cargo area - need a Thule roof rack. Other noise which dealer can''t explain or fix.

Happy with ride, performance and appearance. Very unhappy with quality. I have been in to the dealer probably 25 times. Had to beg for a loaner initially. Service people are friendly and pleasant. X5 is not built for Canadian winters - doors and locks freeze easily. Heated seat and steering wheel are great.

Strength:

It''s a BMW. It handles like a BMW. I went for black and tan with the upgraded stereo and the sports package. Took it for an 8 hour drive across a desert and through the mountains over Thanksgiving and it performed. Surprisingly comfortable ride. Make sure you have a good radar detector...this thing flies.

Weakness:

It''s a BMW...with BMW Service. Recall for new fan took two months to get parts. Front door handles "peeled" after 1 month...took three months to get...being replaced today. Dealership Service Client Sat concerns falls after they get your initial survey done. Calls to BMW USA are worthless and insultingly arrogant. If you get black/tan mix...get black floor mats..tans one are too difficult to keep clean and "age" quickly. If you have a heavy foot, be prepared for the gasoline bill. The greatest weakness is really the initial price...but then, it is a BMW.

The X5 is one of my favorite rides of all time. More people comment about this car than any Corvette, etc. I have owned. I love the way it handles, accelerates, and looks, and sounds. It is a great combination of luxury, performance, and utility. Decision to buy was based on need(3 son''s sporting events) and yet desire to not give up my sports car. Comparison shopped Range Rover, Acura, Mercedes, Cadillac, Lexus, etc.(Acura came in 2nd).

Strength:

Awesome performance and handling. Great styling. Extremely exclusive, THE car to be seen in (by far the most expensive 4X$ in Greece).

Weakness:

Built quality not up to the highest BMW standards (rear wiper failed, the driver''s door rattles annoyingly etc.). Poor fuel economy, extremely expensive options (SATNAV costs $4300 and Sports Pack $5000).

That''s right folks. I paid $113.000 for my fully loaded Sports Pack 4.4i. In Greece, the prices are just crazy and the cost of gas is almost $3.5/gallon. For your info, a Range Rover Vogue costs here US$ 81.000 and that''s a bargain compared to the X5. The standard 4.4 costs $90.000 and even the leather is optional!!!

Range Rover Vogue - enormous road presence but harsh ride and agricultural handling.

Strength:

ride, safety, great handling for suv

Weakness:

wind noise that bmw says is o.k. cracked head, oil leaks, multiple parts failing and replaced, stalling

Great handling but horrible build quality. It is the worst car I have ever owned as far as reliability. It is not dependable. It has been in the shop about 20 times.

Strength:

The X5 drives like a dream. It corners well and the power absolutely flattens you into the seat.

Weakness:

The ride is a little bouncy at times. The navigation system monitor is small (the lexus I just bought had a monitor that was twice as big) and extremely hard to use. It is ridiculous of BMW to ask a driver to pay so much money for such a difficult to use navigation system. The navigation system is not worth the 2K. Probably the worst weakness of the X5 doesn''t have to do with the SAV, but rather the service I received from Shelly BMW in Buena Park, CA. The service personnel there are extremely rude as well as horribly inefficient. They also lied to me when they made numerous mistakes on my brand new X5 (couldn''t fix an electrical problem and the front-center arm rest. claimed that the park distance control was functioning perfectly when another dealership quickly determined that it was not), including denting it. After denting the car, they offered to install a "$700.00" product onto the car to make up for it. The manager was surprised to find out that I had the actual price of the accessory($395 grill guard) memorized and confronted it with him with their own magazine as proof! HORRIBLE DEALERSHIP!

Beautiful vehicle that handles excellently. However, it suffers in cargo space, rear seat leg room and gas mileage (V8).

Strength:

Handling, ergonomics, build quality, driving position, engine and exhaust note!

Weakness:

A bit tight in the cargo area and the odd early rattle that has since disappeared

Excellent vehicle in all key departments. Wonderful V8, sharp brakes, well put together(rattle aside), fun to drive, quick and attractively designed. Shame my wife owns it!

Have owned Mercedes ML 320 and Range Rover HSE 4.6 and both are no match for X5
