BMW X5 (2010 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The X5 represents BMW's first foray into the popular sport-utility-vehicle marketplace. Billed as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" by its maker, the X5 is designed to handle like a true BMW. The redesigned X5 is longer than its predecessor and features a third-row seat that is best for kids only. The ride is still stiff and choppy, but handling is capable and secure. Both the six- and eight-cylinder engines are powerful. The shift lever and iDrive driver-interaction system are both needlessly complicated.

Strength:

Pluses: great handling for such a large item. Wonderful noise from the engine. Supreme feeling of contentment in the cabin. Better in bad conditions than you might have expected, in both snow and rain.

Weakness:

Negatives: lousy gas milage (particulaly how I drive). BMW service act like they are doing YOU a favor by servicing the car -- then they screw up the service. Large blind spots. Sheer bulk -- it actually feels larger than it is. The off-road capability is probably more than you''d want to try out: your teeth may fall out before the car gives up.

Took delivery of the car in July 2000 -- a 2001 model year. Since then about 17,000 miles. This is one seriously fast car. Never mind the SAV bit. The Boston toll-booth tango is usually sorted out in the first 50 yards -- only full-on sports cars can give me a run for it, and then they have to wind it out. And, for you that have not yet had the chance, it gets faster as the engine loosens up. I guesstimate somewhere in the 6.5-6.7 0-60 range. Yet, it demands a lot to drive it. It is not a cruising machine -- even the 540 is an easier drive. But there is sort of an invincibility thing happening: foot deep snow was a piece of cake; slippery hillsides that had other "4-wheel drive" vehicles slithering about were accomplished with no fuss. Now how about the new 4.4 engine in this? Or the M5''s powerplant?

Strength:

Good looks and strong I6 engine. Madd props. from people riding by.

Weakness:

TOO MANY FLAWS for a vehicle that costs this much. Thinking about getting one? Ask the dealer about the aux fan recalls. Also check out the message board at Bimmer.org. Lot of insight there. DEALER SERVICE SUCKS. BMW should shop the Lexus or Infinity dealer and learn a lesson. We bought a 98 LS400, the Lexus dealer service dept. is open 24-7 during the week and has been nothing short of superb. Although I must admit that I fell under the wrong demographics again at the Lexus dealer when I was looking around the lot for a car. No one came out to help me there either. That''s okay though, because I bought mine elsewhere and they have to fix it for me under warranty...free.

I posted on this vehicle a few months back so I thought I would follow up after having the vehicle a little longer. All I can say is the X5 is gone. I reported about the bugs in the vehicle earlier and it got worse. The thing must have been in the shop 15 times, no kidding. The dealer broke more things than they fixed. The main problem was the stalls (We had auto). It stalled twice, took it to the dealer and they "fixed it", then it stalled twice more. Too many little things and the dealer service sucks. I don''t think we were the right demographic to own a Bimmer as I could tell when I went into the service area... no acknowledgement of my presence. Ultimately, my wife and I saw an oppurtunity to get out of the car so we took it. Someone bought it from us.

Weakness:

disappointing quality but most problems can be fixed by BMW service. shaking and rattling.

i''ve had many problems mostly rattling problems but they were all fixed by BMW service. but it took awhile to fix all. i have a 3.0 it''s a great vehicle i hope it was a bit faster, 4.4 is faster but it''s less comfortable.

Strength:

great acceleration from the 4.4 liter V8 Handling package, over-all appearance, motion sensors,AWD for all weather conditions. Crash test were good..side airbags and roof post airbags. slide-out cargo area +++

Weakness:

needs more cargo space, the rear seat doesn''t let down

Its a little pricey....but well worth the investment. I enjoy the V8 power and the sport handling package (19" wheels). My wife also has a 2001 X5 V8...w/standard 18" but hers has the motion detectors and blinds. We''re the X% duo!! One black and one Silver.

Power, Speed, I dont think the x5 is SUV it's Like M5 but few Inches up.

Weakness:

Very poor off-road, A lot of problems in the Air suspension, I think the X5 is Great Car but i dont think it's a SUV or Off-Road car if you want a Off-Road SUV get a LandRover Discovery or RangeRover or Toyota LandCruiser.

This Vehicle is Great it improve good speed and power on-road but one thing i dont like about the X5 it's a very poor car for Off-Road i Tested it off-roads it was very poor but on-road it was very great.

Strength:

Stiff chassis, well damped ride characteristics. Low CG gives car-like handling with minimal body roll. Excellent AWD system and traction control. Motor / trans are very smooth. Unmatched build quality.

Weakness:

Steering too heavy for most customers. Air suspension in rear causes harsh ride, especially for back passengers. Traction control system is somewhat noisy.

This vehicle is fantastic for people who want an SUV that drives like a car. The AWD system is excellent, although the OEM tires are not well suited for winter. With a good set of snow tires this SUV would be unstoppable in the white stuff. The price is somewhat high, but you get what you pay for. This BMW sets the standard by which all others are measured.

Strength:

Great Handling, Fast, Smooth, Looks better than any other SUV/SAV/Car on the road, awesome engine.

Weakness:

Absolutely nothing.

I paid $57000 for every option but the sport package, absolutely love the car and would suggest it to anyone interested in a suv/sav.

Similar Products Used:

Tahoe, Blazer, they aren't similar, and dont really compare, but the X5 blows 'em out of the water.
