where do i start? this thing (i dont want to call it a suv) had so many problems i would advise anyone to not even think of getting one. at 66,000 miles i had to replace the ERG valve, as well as a part in the Vortec V-6 known as the "spider". The latter runs over $500 for the part, and is labor intensive to install. the rear wiper motor went out after the warranty went out (dont they always) then at 85,000. miles a clunking sound under the bottom of the drivers seat started and found out it was a cracked support arm welded to the frame. the dealer told chevrolet that it was chevrolets proble but shevy would not cover any repairs. chevrolet told me that it did not know about the vehicle use of road!. the dealer told them that by the looks it has never been off road by the looks underneath. (i think i had in the dirt 2 times! in my yard). besides just what the thing made to be used for!!!!!!! ball joints replaced about 5 times the first at 19,000. same with the brakes. i check them now every 6 mounts. commmon problem for most blazers i was told. a water pump, altanator, cat converter, muffler (the after market was 8 inches shorter and req'd repiping it). oh and the fuel pump.

Strength:

The 4WD works well in deep snow. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly. The 4.3 Liter engine accelerates smoothly and strongly. The air conditioning keeps everything chilled in 100 degree sunshine.

Weakness:

Nothing unexpected yet but it is nearly new. Remember that the the technology in these vehicles first appeared in the 1996 model year. Competitors utilize newer, more refined technology.

The final price served as the main incentive to purchase this vehicle. The MSRP was $25,370. I paid $13,521.87 NEW which represents paying 53% of the MSRP. With that kind of a discount, how could I say no, I really want a 4Runner or Pathfinder? The odometer had 42 miles when I purchased it in March of 2003. Yes, it was a slow moving leftover the dealer was happy to unload. But, hey, I am a value shopper!! It is now coming up on 12,000 miles. A screw on the lower dash popped out 10 miles after leaving the dealership. The rear wiper fluid line stopped working this winter (crimped line). A local Chevrolet dealer resolved both issues although it failed to reinstall a piece of plastic trim that is hidden behind the inside mounted spare tire. The 4WD easily handled 13 to 15 inches of powdery snow this winter. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly. The gas mileage matches the modest estimates assigned to this vehicle. I also own a 1998 GMC Jimmy (see my review under hardcharger43) which has had a few repair issues during its 58,000 miles of life. I expect that the Blazer will be no different. I may buy an extended warranty when the regular warranty expires. The overall quality found in these vehicles is questionable. The Blazer is early in its life. The key to buying a Blazer, Jimmy, or Bravada is to obtain a huge discount. Since this will be the last year for the S10 Blazer, there won't be any new ones left by the end of the year. The resale values plummet for these SUVs because of their problemmatic parts quality. The engineering and workmanship leaves much to be desired as well. Still, if the discount compared to a similar 4Runner or Pathfinder is large enough (at least a 30% differential), GMs products should be considered. Please remember that GM does not stand behind its products beyond meeting basic warranty needs. It also can be rather surly when dealing with individual customers (conclusions reached from discussing my Jimmy's ongoing oil leak with GM employees). Part of GM's problem is that it suffers from $1,100 in legacy costs for each of its vehicles made. Legacy costs are the pension and health care costs generated by a million or so retirees and dependents. The Japanese competitors don't labor under this handicap. Hence, GM can not charge more for its vehicles but has this additional overhead burden. As an offset, it has squeezed its parts suppliers into lowering their prices. They have complied under pressure but consequently produce cheaper and inferior parts which find their way into GM products. The dealers are satisfied with this situation because part of their profits are earned from their service shops which stay busy. That is my editorial for the day!

Strength:

4WD performance in snow. Cargo capacity. Long distance seating comfort. Console gauge arrangement. Good visibility through front, side, and rear windows. Ease of moving rear seat up/down for cargo space. Rear split seat. Excellent heater and A/C.

Weakness:

Middling acceleration (not as good as expected). Relatively loud environment at highway speeds. No separate A/C switch --A/C turns on when fan output moved to two specific settings. Poor city gas milage.

In September 2003, I traded in my '89 S10 Blazer for a 2004 Blazer (See September 2003 review of previous Blazer). I use this new Blazer mostly for long distance [out of state] trips or for occasional trips to local Home Depot. It now has about 3,600 miles on it. After eight months, and driving it in both hot and very cold weather, I have learned a bit about the car (see Strengths and Weaknesses below). I have driven the car several times to other US states. After four or six hours, the driver's seat is still comfortable, and my wife reports she finds the passenger seat comfortable. The car has consistantly averaged 20 mpg highway. We have been easily able to place two bicycles (or a dozen sets of skis) , cooler chests, and luggage in the back at the same time. The vehicle is able to pass efficiently at highway speeds, but acceleration from a dead stop is not so good. Thus far there have been no mechanical failures. The major thing I have noted is that the vehicle is very heavy, perhaps too heavy for the engine. My wife has complained that the doors are too heavy. So, while it is not perfect, it is about what I expected and I am pleased. In January 2004 we bought the wife a 2004 Toyota Corolla (review to follow soon). We both would give it 5 stars. While I like my Blazer I can give it only 3 stars, because it is clear that GM still has some work to do to match the Japanese automakers.

READ THIS REVIEW: DON'T BUY A BLAZER When i first purchased my blazer at 20,000 mi all went well. Within 2 months my check engine light came on and said i had a transmission problem. It turned out that I had to rebuild the transmission. Then, a few of the speakers began to stop working. The brakes had to be replaced at 60,000 miles and the truck began to go to the right. It went to the right not b/c of dis-alighnment, but b/c my front bearings were completley shot( $800 job)My water pump failed, my radiator needed repalcement, O2 sensors kept failing, premature replacement on my fuel filter,Front wipers work when they want and sometimes don't stop, rear wiper motor broke. shoddy interior quality, seat handle broke off, switches came loose, rattles and squeaks, door seals leak in heavy rain, interior road noise has increased, some rust occuring in body, molding coming undone. There is probably some things i left out. So you get the point why it may not be the best idea to own a blazer. I have invested pioneer speakers and an alpine DVD headunit and tinted my two front windows. Also has real xenon headlights which are wonderful. I feel that it is not worth it to invest any aftermarket products witht his vihicle, as i mistakenly did. It is simply not worth it with this money pit

Strength:

Truck ride, styling, roominess inside, smooth 4x4,

Weakness:

obvious problems with wheel bearings, brakes, sensor issues, general design flaws and lack of acknowledgement of problems by GM

Have always been a Chevy buyer - however, since this truck would not be so quick to only consider Chevy the next time. Overall, love the truck, sharp two tone exterior and drives really nice but Hate the Chevrolet problems that are persistant and that GM refuses to ever address in this vehicle. Truck now has 69,000 mi adn I have had it for almost two years and we have replaced, CV boot, front wheel bearings, brakes/rotors all the way around, to prevent having to replace brakes evertime you turn around we have them cleaned at every other oil change(for an addtional $35), gas guage seems inconsistant - never know if its reading accurately or not. Body moulding have had to be re attached - kept popping off in the NY winters. Two months ago, my service engine soon light came on and we can't figure out why - error msg reads problem with air pump with this model is not even equipped with!? Since this my mileage has gone down drastically to about 12 mi/gl instead of the 17-19 I was getting before the light came on. I do really like the truck,I like the room inside, the styling, the truck feel and the 4x4 has been great, It's just unfortunate that GM refuses to step up to the plate and continues to fail with this truck. We plan to trade it in before we encounter any more problems for either a Ford Escape or Explorer - Ford has really made great strides in reliablity and style in recent years.

Repairs... No recalls? Repairs...

I have had my Blazer for 2 years. I have had some problems with it..multi-function switch, leaking in the pinion gear, heater motor, throttle sensor, MAP sensor, brakes (front/rear). Not all at once and the sensors were replaced to fix a hesitation problem that I am having. It didnt work. Now it is either my fuel pump or the spider valve? My engine light comes on and off from the hesitation. But I have to say I like my Blazer and I keep on fixing it because I can't get rid of it. I have some of the same problems others have experienced such as the front seat handle breaking off and the door pins keep popping out. The rear window squeaks occasionally. I am unsure if I would purchase another Blazer at this time. I have 107,000 miles on it and I bought it at 66,000 miles.

Ipurchased my blazer used at 28,000 miles I have gotten tremendous service out of this vehicle.(i'm knocking on wood) I now have approx 160,000 mls on this vehicle. The following repairs and routine service has been done. Change oil, tires, replace wiper blades, air conditioner coolent refill, battery replaced, blinker bulb replaced, something done to the wipers becuase they would stop in the middle of use (this was after 100,000 mls)less than $30.00, something done to the alternator less than $80.00. Thats it!! Granted the vehicle doesn't ride as well as it use to and the seat is beginning to not sit as comfortable but, other than that the vehicle has held up well and i call myself hard on cars. So, keep in mind that the not so great reviews may be folks that got a lemon and should have pursued the lemon law. Also most of miles are HWY miles not city travel but she has been a good one and i plan on gettting as many miles as i can out of her. Happy Driving!!!!

Strength:

Engine power, ride, appearance, basically just about everything.

Weakness:

If you need a clear view through the rear window, get the spare tire mounted under the body, not the swing-away rear tire carrier.

We bought this Blazer brand new in January 2003. I had wanted a Blazer for 15 years, from when the small ones were still S10 Blazers. To me, this vehicle was well worth the wait. I am completely pleased with this SUV. No,it doesn't get great gas mileage, but it is an SUV, so that is to be expected. A month after we bought this, we had a mini blizzard and got to use the 4WD for the first time. It worked exceptionally well. It won't go places where my husband's F150 will go because it doesn't have the clearance. But, it was bought for me, not him, and I don't plan on driving through the woods knocking down trees like he does. I absolutely love this vehicle. It is beautifully styled, has power, rides very well, and has cargo space sufficient for hauling our daughter's things back & forth from college. And the 4WD practically guarantees that I won't miss a day of work due to snow. The only drawback was the rear mounted spare tire carrier. It does block your vision to the rear, but I chose the rear carrier because it was easier access to the spare than underneath the body (I have a history of getting an extreme amount of flat tires). It just took some getting used to. I had to break myself of the habit of looking through the rear window when backing up. I just learned to rely more on the mirrors and I have no problems now. I also feel safer on the highway in this than I did in my small car I had previously, I guess it's the size that accounts for that. And the size is perfect for me. A full size (now called Tahoes) would have been a little too big. It also is a harder for some people to get into the back of my Blazer, since it is a 2 door, but I rarely have people in the back and if they don't like climbing in there, they can drive themselves where they want to go. I personally prefer the 2 door over the 4 door. All the controls are positioned well; very handy. The automatic tranmission is smooth. Whoever invented those heated mirrors should be rewarded sufficiently, they are the greatest things ever!

I hated this SUV, Couldnt wait to get rid of it. The inside was falling apart, The ride made me feel like I was going to roll over at any time. The push button 4wheel drive was nice and I didnt really have any problems with the motor or transmission but the problems with the ride and interior was enough for me. It was used so it could have just been rode hard and put up wet I guess..I dont know.I had a full size blazer and it was wonderful!
