Strength:

It's roomy, I not elbow to elbow with my passenger and my children aren't on top of each other. Great on long trips.

Weakness:

The hardware, in the last month four on my heat control knobs have broken. The rear heater want cut off somtimes, and if you don't listen for the blower your battery goes dead. Since I've owned my vehicle 2/00 I had to replace the manifold gaskets, this month which my dealer told me was supposed to be the new improved model. I was told that was the second one he's replaced that week. My rear engine plug was leaking coolant, my belt pivot arm was wobbling, my front brakes and both u joints went out, along with the thermostat, and a fist load of fuses. In the last month I've spent over $1100 in repairs on a vehicle with 63,000 miles. Before I got my manifold gaskets replaced I use to get over 600 miles on the highway and 425 in the city. Now I get less than 400 in the city and I'm scared to seem highway miles.

If you think the payments are bad wait for the repairs that match them.
Good second vehicle for family events, and transporting. If you want someone to take your money, give me a call, I cut out the middle man your friendly GMC/Chevy dealer.

Weakness:

none. i have never had any problems with it. best vehicle any1 could ever own.

i would recomend the suburban because u can not go wrong with it. it has everything u need. speed, power, size, luxury, and it lasts for a long time. many people think that big suvs go slow, but mine has a standard suburban engine and we are always passing sports cars on the highways. The Suburban Has It All.

Model Reviewed: Chevrolet Suburban (Scottsdale 10)

Strength:

1. Tailgate with power roll-down window. Makes loading easy.
2. fold down center seat and removable rear seat
3. Very basic. With the exception of the power assist brakes and steering this vehicle is quite basic. I don't need air conditioning, a stereo and power mirrors and door locks to make me happy. In fact, they make me more unhappy.
4. I'm not sure what it's called, but the device that improves fuel economy which my dad's 1977 Chevy doesn't have.
5. Easy to read and understand gauges. The fact that this vehicle has few electrical devices makes doing my own repairs easy to do. There aren't a lot of wires in the way.
6. No remote control. Once again this reduces wires and eliminates the possibility of make losing the remote.
7. Lots of windows. Fewer blind spots.
8. Lots of room for cargo or passengers or both.
9. Good for traveling. Good fuel economy for an SUV although it could be better with suggestions listed below. 25 MPG for summer highway driving, 14 MPG for winter city driving, and 19 MPG for summer city driving. Lots of storage room.
10. Low first gear allows easy recovery when vehicle fishtails on snow and ice.
11. P235/75R15 Bridgestone Blizzak Tires allow good traction to ice and snow.

Weakness:

1. V8 engine. I would prefer a fuel efficient V6. I don't care much for lots of power.
2. The transmission. I prefer the 5 speed manual with 2 speed axle shift. It should have a low first gear. Once again it's more fuel efficient.
3. The carburetor floods sometimes in cold weather.
4. The engine doesn't shut off when attempting to drive with the emergency brakes on.
5. Power assist brakes and steering. This means there's little to no steering or braking power during an engine failure.
6. Rear windows (except tailgate window) don't roll down.
7. You can't use the 4 way flashers and brakes at the same time.
8. Automatic Choke. Manual choke is better because sometimes you don't need to choke the vehicle.

* Good for family vehicle that is sport utility tough but easy on you
* Not good if you are looking an inexpensive, fuel efficient vehicle that is easy to drive. Some people consider this vehicle as big.
* Check out my reviews I wrote earlier on the Dodge Ram and the Chevrolet C/K Pickup.

Model Reviewed: Chev Suburban 2x4 1/2 ton, 350 engine

Strength:

Runs, and runs, and runs...rarely needs repairs. I have 240,000 miles on
the thing now, and I have had very minor problems.

Weakness:

Rust. I live on a gravel, dirt road, in an area that uses lots of salt during the winter months, and that has taken its toll on the rocker panels and the body behind the rear wheels. The rear "barn doors" have some rust around the rubber for the glass, too. I'm not complaining...240,000 miles is not too bad for the amount of rust present.
Also, the water pump has gone out 4 times. I can change the pump in about an hour now, with so much practice.

List of repairs over 240,000 miles: One radiator, 4 water
pumps, 2 mufflers, one starter, 2 transmission overhauls (one was really
needed, the other was after 140,000 miles on the transmission...just thought it was about time for an overhaul,) one set of lower ball joints, one idler arm, one alternator, and one set of shocks. I did have to replace the head gaskets, since one of them simply rusted out and leaked engine coolant. All they did was remove the heads, replace the gaskets, and button it back up. Other than that, the engine has never been touched. I still get 16-18 miles per gallon on average, it starts easily everytime, and has never left me stranded. Granted, I change oil every 3k, all belts and hoses every 2-3 years, and tinker with it on a regular basis, but shouldn't we all take care of our vehicles like that?
Anyway, it isn't pretty anymore, but I'd still take the thing cross country on a minute's notice. One day it will surely just die, like the car in the first Blues Brothers movie, but until then, I'll keep on driving it.
I just bought a 99 2x4 halfton suburban with the 350 engine. I can only hope that this one is even partially as reliable as the 87.

I AM VERY SATISFIED SO FAR WITH MY SUBURBAN.YEAH THE GAS MILAGE SUCKS BUT YOU CAN EXPECT THAT WITH A TRUCK THIS SIZE.THE 3RD SEAT IS GREAT FOR MOTHER IN LAWS SO YOU DON'T HEAR THEM.THE TRUCK SEATS MY WHOLE FAMILY AND THEN SOME.EVEN AFTER ALL THE KIDS ARE GROWN UP I THINK I WILL STILL OWN ONE.THE FLARES AROUND THE TIRES GIVES IT A VERY SPORTY LOOK.THE TURNING RADIUS COULD BE A LITTLE BETTER.WE BOUGHT THIS TRUCK TO TOW A RV BUT WE HAVE NOT BOUGHT THE RV YET BUT THE POWER THAT THIS TRUCK HAS I DON'T THINK THERE WILL BE ANY PROBLEMS PULLING WITH ITS 5.7 LITER V8.....

Strength:

Body style is much improved and with factory wheel flares looks as sporty as the Cadillac Escalade.

Weakness:

whistling sound at 35 mph to 50 mph from bug shield deflecting air to side mirrors. Just crank up the tunes!
Rear cargo doors are lighter, which makes closing them easier, but doesn't seem as solid as before.

This is my 3rd Suburban.('89,'95 and '01)
This one is head and shoulders over the previous two.
The ride is unbelievable!! Handling is suberb.
Got the leather seats and second row buckets, would highly recommend both.
Rear audio controls are great for trips. I can listen to Merle and the kids can use headphones for Limp Bizkit.
Tows big boat like a breeze, and hauls half the neighborhood to ball games.
Lots of neat features including automatic headlights, great stereo, and better console and cupholders than previous models.
Seats are a dream, plenty of headroom, even with sunroof.(great option!)

Also like programmable door locks and rear door lock in cargo area.

Indestructible: ran into other vehicles, throught heavy cables, signs, re-enforced cement column.
SIZE: biggest light-truck on the road before f@*d excursion. the inside area is incredible. i can load up 5 friend and almost a dozen surfboard/accesories all inside and be comfortable.
virtually no Blind spots. only after i added lift blind spots occured, but only if the other car is too close to the ground.
wieght(GVW): can tow as good as a 3/4 truck and even out pull a 3/4 in a pull-off.
respect from other drivers: people just seem to get out of the way. Privacy tint(dual plane glass) is awesome and theft resistant.
40gal. gas tank.
AND of course the chevy 350. 167K mi with lots of high reving and offroading and extreme heat and its still running strong(knock on wood).

Weakness:

Drivetrain: 1/2 suburban 4x4's were and still are totally under-equipt. the rear 10bolt(8.5 ring) is not sufficient. also high gears(like 3.08's and 3.42's) should have never been used. the highest and standard gears GM should have used is 3.73's and up. TH700-R4 is a definite weakness of the vehicle. I'm sure that GM should have taken more steps in designing Suburbans.
Rather than just putting a C/K 1500 truck drivetrain on a Suburban chasis, GM should have accounted for the added weight of all the extra glass, rubber, metal, carpet, and plastic that a Suburban has(which is quite a bit).
bad gas milage.
all the usual: alternator, power steering pump, A/C, brakes.

Considering the Suburan was bought brand new and is still running today, it has been a great investment. It's first 6 years it was used as daily driver and for up to 8 hour road trips across Texas. Then my parents gave it to me in 1995 with 132K mi. It's seen lots of sand and salt water, mud, dirt and gravel. it actually took a dive into the Gulf of Mexico one and and was floating. rust is at a minimum but is apparent at the corner of the wheelwells, where its notorious. the rear window is sluggish in cold weather but is still better than barn doors-- in my opinion. as for towing, pulling and hauling it is unbeatable(i cant imagine what a 3/4ton or 1ton sub can accomplish). i've towed trailers and broken down vehicles, pulled out stuck cars/trucks, and am constantly hauling loads in the gigantic cargo area. the only down side to the cargo area is that you can only access it through the tailgate and the 2nd doors. Plus you really dont want to load dirt or other grungy/stinky stuff in it like you would with a truck. but its great for keeping valuable or fragile loads out of the wind and weather. anyone who is looking for a vihicle with similar capabilities, id go with a Chevy/GMC Suburban, preferabley pre-1992 for higher cargo capacities and the advantage of Straight Axle offroad capabilities. post-1991 design for added luxury and an all-around smoother ride.

Strength:

Well constructed, car-like ride for a 6000 lb truck. Controls located conveniently, lots of perks for long trips are standard equipment. With the 3rd seat removed and the rear seats folded down, there is no 1/2 ton vehicle made with more cargo space except a full-size van and they ride awful.

Weakness:

Of course the gas mileage. But as said before, if you want a BIG suv you have to deal with the trade offs. Re-sale value is not as good as prior to the Tahoes, but still very good.

Previously owned an old 1991 for about 2 years, my only complaint on it was the paint coming off in sheets after the truck was 10 years old, and of course, the gas mileage (about 12 mpg). The '99 seems to be a very sound truck, lots of cupholders throughout, the rear heat/ac seems to work a lot better than on my first one. Gas mileage is still only 15 with the Vortec 5700 small-block, seems it could be better. I will install a K & N filter to improve this. The stereo is excellent in the 99 for a factory unit, I like the seats and it rides like a dream. Experiencing a slight jiggle in the front end at hiway speeds, maybe only an alignment thing since the truck had 39000 miles on it when I bought it. In summary, to own a suburban is to love it, you must expect the gas mileage and parking problems if you want a BIG truck with the seating capacity and cargo space.

(pre 1997 Model) - I prevously owned a 1978 Jeep Cherokee, 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser and now this 1996 Suburban. 1996 is one year prior to the Vortec V-8. The Suburban spoils you with its ability to tow and haul gear very comfortably. With a 42 gal tank I can travel over 600 miles without refueling. Its a great family vacation vehicle. I'm sold on them.
