GMC Suburban XLT
Strength:
It's roomy, I not elbow to elbow with my passenger and my children aren't on top of each other. Great on long trips.
Weakness:
The hardware, in the last month four on my heat control knobs have broken. The rear heater want cut off somtimes, and if you don't listen for the blower your battery goes dead. Since I've owned my vehicle 2/00 I had to replace the manifold gaskets, this month which my dealer told me was supposed to be the new improved model. I was told that was the second one he's replaced that week. My rear engine plug was leaking coolant, my belt pivot arm was wobbling, my front brakes and both u joints went out, along with the thermostat, and a fist load of fuses. In the last month I've spent over $1100 in repairs on a vehicle with 63,000 miles. Before I got my manifold gaskets replaced I use to get over 600 miles on the highway and 425 in the city. Now I get less than 400 in the city and I'm scared to seem highway miles. If you think the payments are bad wait for the repairs that match them. Weakness:
none. i have never had any problems with it. best vehicle any1 could ever own. i would recomend the suburban because u can not go wrong with it. it has everything u need. speed, power, size, luxury, and it lasts for a long time. many people think that big suvs go slow, but mine has a standard suburban engine and we are always passing sports cars on the highways. The Suburban Has It All. Similar Products Used: well ive had two suburbans b4 (1988 and 1993) both were just as good. but before both of those i made a huge mistake and bought a ford brand new in 1985. it had many problems with it. so i bought a suburban and never turned back......thank god for chevrolet and the suburban |

Runs, and runs, and runs...rarely needs repairs. I have 240,000 miles on
Weakness:
Rust. I live on a gravel, dirt road, in an area that uses lots of salt during the winter months, and that has taken its toll on the rocker panels and the body behind the rear wheels. The rear "barn doors" have some rust around the rubber for the glass, too. I'm not complaining...240,000 miles is not too bad for the amount of rust present. GREAT RIDE,PLENTY OF POWER .VERY QUIET HARDLY ANY ROAD NOISE.VERY LARGE IN SIDE FOR SEATING AND CARGO.VERY INTIMADATING AGAINST OTHER DRIVERS.
Weakness:
THEY SHOULD HAVE USED ALUMINUM OR ANYTHING FOR THE HEATER KNOBS THEY SUCK . I AM VERY SATISFIED SO FAR WITH MY SUBURBAN.YEAH THE GAS MILAGE SUCKS BUT YOU CAN EXPECT THAT WITH A TRUCK THIS SIZE.THE 3RD SEAT IS GREAT FOR MOTHER IN LAWS SO YOU DON'T HEAR THEM.THE TRUCK SEATS MY WHOLE FAMILY AND THEN SOME.EVEN AFTER ALL THE KIDS ARE GROWN UP I THINK I WILL STILL OWN ONE.THE FLARES AROUND THE TIRES GIVES IT A VERY SPORTY LOOK.THE TURNING RADIUS COULD BE A LITTLE BETTER.WE BOUGHT THIS TRUCK TO TOW A RV BUT WE HAVE NOT BOUGHT THE RV YET BUT THE POWER THAT THIS TRUCK HAS I DON'T THINK THERE WILL BE ANY PROBLEMS PULLING WITH ITS 5.7 LITER V8..... 1/2 4X4 Siverado
Strength:
Indestructible: ran into other vehicles, throught heavy cables, signs, re-enforced cement column.
Weakness:
Drivetrain: 1/2 suburban 4x4's were and still are totally under-equipt. the rear 10bolt(8.5 ring) is not sufficient. also high gears(like 3.08's and 3.42's) should have never been used. the highest and standard gears GM should have used is 3.73's and up. TH700-R4 is a definite weakness of the vehicle. I'm sure that GM should have taken more steps in designing Suburbans. Considering the Suburan was bought brand new and is still running today, it has been a great investment. It's first 6 years it was used as daily driver and for up to 8 hour road trips across Texas. Then my parents gave it to me in 1995 with 132K mi. It's seen lots of sand and salt water, mud, dirt and gravel. it actually took a dive into the Gulf of Mexico one and and was floating. rust is at a minimum but is apparent at the corner of the wheelwells, where its notorious. the rear window is sluggish in cold weather but is still better than barn doors-- in my opinion. as for towing, pulling and hauling it is unbeatable(i cant imagine what a 3/4ton or 1ton sub can accomplish). i've towed trailers and broken down vehicles, pulled out stuck cars/trucks, and am constantly hauling loads in the gigantic cargo area. the only down side to the cargo area is that you can only access it through the tailgate and the 2nd doors. Plus you really dont want to load dirt or other grungy/stinky stuff in it like you would with a truck. but its great for keeping valuable or fragile loads out of the wind and weather. anyone who is looking for a vihicle with similar capabilities, id go with a Chevy/GMC Suburban, preferabley pre-1992 for higher cargo capacities and the advantage of Straight Axle offroad capabilities. post-1991 design for added luxury and an all-around smoother ride. Strength:
Well constructed, car-like ride for a 6000 lb truck. Controls located conveniently, lots of perks for long trips are standard equipment. With the 3rd seat removed and the rear seats folded down, there is no 1/2 ton vehicle made with more cargo space except a full-size van and they ride awful.
Weakness:
Of course the gas mileage. But as said before, if you want a BIG suv you have to deal with the trade offs. Re-sale value is not as good as prior to the Tahoes, but still very good. Previously owned an old 1991 for about 2 years, my only complaint on it was the paint coming off in sheets after the truck was 10 years old, and of course, the gas mileage (about 12 mpg). The '99 seems to be a very sound truck, lots of cupholders throughout, the rear heat/ac seems to work a lot better than on my first one. Gas mileage is still only 15 with the Vortec 5700 small-block, seems it could be better. I will install a K & N filter to improve this. The stereo is excellent in the 99 for a factory unit, I like the seats and it rides like a dream. Experiencing a slight jiggle in the front end at hiway speeds, maybe only an alignment thing since the truck had 39000 miles on it when I bought it. In summary, to own a suburban is to love it, you must expect the gas mileage and parking problems if you want a BIG truck with the seating capacity and cargo space. Similar Products Used: You can cram my 95 jeep cherokee sport in the back of this thing. If you like a lot of room, the suburban is your truck. |

Weakness:
Have experienced some electrical problems, particularly when towing in extreme heat. (pre 1997 Model) - I prevously owned a 1978 Jeep Cherokee, 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser and now this 1996 Suburban. 1996 is one year prior to the Vortec V-8. The Suburban spoils you with its ability to tow and haul gear very comfortably. With a 42 gal tank I can travel over 600 miles without refueling. Its a great family vacation vehicle. I'm sold on them. |
