Strength:

The Suburban is a ""workhorse"". I tow a 30' Avion with very little effort. Ilike the 2 swinging doors on the rear. Comfortable to ride in especially on freeways and interstates.

Weakness:

Gas miliage is low 7-9 MPG and I have a Gearvendor Overdrive that was an add-on that functions intermittently. Emission inspections are a hassle.

(pre 1997 Model) - Overall a good tow-vehicle. Has trouble passing emission inspection due to the big 454 engine.

The 5700 gives good power.

None of the sway evident in Ford models when turning, drives more like a passenger car.

Buy gasoline stocks! It will "fishtail" on gravel and ice at moderate turning
speeds.

Great storage capacity-comfortable seating.
Experienced several electrical problems;battery draining due to faulty passenger door switch;new alternator. Dealership was dogged and polite about eventually finding problem.
Purchased the $1700.extended warranty which covers all the bells and whistles-allows me to sleep easier. Compared to 1993 Bravada, it's a tank! The Bravada was big on comfort, but self destructed after the extended warranty-70000 miles. The Suburban already has 67000 and shows no signs of wear. Brakes should be checked annually for wear, but all-in-all it's a pleasure to drive. Also found I get more respect on the road from other drivers.

Model Reviewed: GMC Suburban

Strength:

The vehicle is best suited for large families and long drives.

Weakness:

The workmanship and quality of the vehicle is poor when compared to a similar vehicle built in Japan.

The GMC Suburban is a poorly built vehicle that demands a premium price. During the warranty period the transmission was completely replaced, in addition to several other minor mechanical problems. At 49,000 miles the ABS system failed to operate properly, which led to a $700.00 repair at the local GM dealership.

The GMC suburban does not come close to quality, reliability and durability of a Toyota vehicle. I previously owned two Toyotas, a Celica and a 4-Runner. I drove the Celica 10 years, over 155,000 miles and never took it to the shop. I traded it in for the 4-Runner and drove it for 45,000 miles, never took it to the shop. I started a family and decided I needed a bigger vehicle, so I chose a Suburban, American built. I regret that decision to this day. As soon as I can, I will sell or trade the Suburban for another Toyota. I won't make the same mistake again.

Model Reviewed: Chevy Suburban 1500 LT

Strength:

Size, smooth ride, versatility (can carry kids and lots of stuff at the same time), roomy interior, comfort when traveling on long trips, safety.

Weakness:

Mechanical problems - transmission (replaced at 61,000 miles), steering (speed sensor), starter motor, gear box. (Thank God we had the foresight to buy the extended warranty.) Have to mention gas mileage and parking, too, but both are expected with this size vehicle so neither "problem" has bothered us.

Would recommend highly if you have occasion to haul kids or travel frequently and if you purchase a warranty (ours paid for itself within three weeks of buying it!). The mechanical problems were annoying (the transmission went out an hour into a trip to Houston) but since all were covered by the warranty, some of the inconvience was avoided.

We no longer own this Suburban but we are currently looking at buying another Suburban since this one held up so well when we were rear-ended by a young kid and shoved over a guard rail. We (mom, dad, two kids) were all buckled in and the car frame yielded very little, protecting us all from injury (even though the car was otherwise totalled). Can't come with a better recommendation than that, I guess.

Model Reviewed: 2500 series 4wd

Strength:

very roomy, comfortible ride, see over other cars, 4wd handles excellent in snow and ice (not as good as one of those volvo awd wagons though), we live in the mountains and this thing has got us up to the mountain and back hundreds of times with out missing a beat.

Weakness:

The interior controls look, feel, and are cheap. The leather feels cheap, seats arnt as comfortable as they could have made them. Whatever you do dont get one of thier alarms it drained our battery twice and then kept going off and not letting us start the car, eventualy i just ripped out the wires, it was the cheapest alarm they could have gotten. huge gas guzzler, for 2 miles less a gallon i think you could get a hummer. This thing is kind of a beast to park. cheap stereo, ac/heater knobs in back fell off and wont go back on right, but things are bound to happen after riding with teenagers for 5 years.

This car i think is well worth the $, we have had it for about 6 years now aproaching 115,000 miles and it has run fairly smoothly. No major things have gone wrong with it, just normal wear and tear. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone with a boat or anyone with a family who wants good safety with plenty of room to separate the kids. Much more room for 3rd row seat passangers than other suv's such as the land cruiser, navigator, explorer. This thing will pull anything, but it will cost you, be ready for $500 a month in gas bills. it gets a steady 10mpg. down hill with a good wind.

Strength:

The LT trim offers nice stock wheels, comfortable/roomie seating, impressive sound for a stock radio/cd, roomie cargo, a heavy duty hitch cover, and a quiet engine.

Weakness:

Gas guzzler. Some passengers stated that it is hard to climb to the 3rd seat room for it is a tight squeeze. Chevrolet should of picked up LT265/75/R16, instead of the stock 245/75/16. The serpentine belt was replaced at 15,000 miles due to a loud squeeky noise.

As a previous owner of a 1996 Chevy Full-size Z-71, the first truck with a third door, of course, I opted for a new 1999 LT Chevy Suburban. Love the size, power, strength, looks of the Suburban. Every one in the family loves it for its size and is the number one vehicle in a large family for long trips.

During the week, I drive a 1997 4Runner 2WD, and of course, I missed the Burban's features. Comperatively, the Toyota 4Runner with its 48,000 miles has only been in shop for oil changes. On the contrary, the Z-71 truck and LT Burban need a little bit more attention.

Model Reviewed: 2wd

Strength:

the strength. It always feels good to kick someones ass in a drag race, barely touching the gas and hearing it roar is cool. The size is awesome, makes you feel like you are driving a truck, not an import.

Weakness:

some rattling noise. takes a while to warm up in the winter, not enough vents in old models. 2wd slips easy in turns on snow, throw 200 lbs in the rear and your good to go.

It's my dads truck, everyone loves it, mom hates the size, but she drives a tracker. EXELLENT VEHICLE. Body is in superb shape, 220 000 kilometers hwy on her, but thats just broken in for a chev. We all love it, especially dad, who paid for it hahaha.
