Strength:

Better than average fuel consumption (as compared to other trucks), seating position, value for money, fun to drive.

Weakness:

Lack of oomph, rear leg room although the rear seat are excellent and this annoying chirping sound that has developped.

Note that price is in Canadian Dollars! Overall very happy. A little under powered and buzzy sounding for my liking. Due to poor road conditions it has developed a chirp every time I hit a bump or pothole. Don't know if anyone else has a similar experience but the dealer refuses to do anything about it saying that it is fine. Quite reliable and it's a great thing to have such a huge fuel tank on an economical car.

Strength:

Heavy frame, four wheel drive with low range transfer case, 3,500 GVW and 26 MGP.

Weakness:

Needs removeable hard top and a little more ground clearance

My previous vheicle was a 99 Jeep wrangler 4.0 with 31 inch tires. My work, as a civl engineer requires me to travel over 1,000 miles a week and so I traded the Jeep for a more economical truck. The 99 Tracker has proved to be a sound 4X4 with the addition of 225 Mud Grips to the stock suspension. Unimproved roads and cutting your own trail is nearly the equal of the more robust Jeep while acheving twice the mileage(26mpg). In high winds the Tracker is similar to the VW beetle and requires some caution. I removed the rear seat head rest and instaled a K&N high flow air filter but it is mostly stock. Over rock and mud ( with the new tires) I have not stuck the Tracker yet.. A nice GREEN 4X4.

brakes, no front wheel drive. i don't understand how any suv's don't have front wheel drive unless it is a 4x4. i believe all suv's should come equip with front wheel drive instead of rear wheel drive. it doesn't take a genius to know that when you break the suv's weight shifts to the front not the back. if i can't afford a 4x4 at least give me somthing to work with.

i hate to say it but i wish i never bought the tracker. or should i say i wish i never bought a 2 wheel drive suv and no anti lock brake. when trying to come to a complete stop it slides, just doing 40mph, i scared to drive on the express way becaue i know just doing speed limit of 55mph, will have me sliding into the next driver. i live in chicago and right know i'm terrified to drive in the snow/ice because i know just on dry payment the tracker is an accident waiting to happen.

Model Reviewed: two-door 4x4 convertible

Strength:

Fuel economy, cheap 4x4 that goes almost anywhere, very easy to drive and gets into tight spaces effortlessly. Reasonable comfort given it's a two-door soft-top with 95 horsepower; longest trip was about 500 miles one way -- I survived fine but my girlfriend was a little zonked out. The soft-top folds down very easily. It's light and the tires and brakes will last forever. It's reasonably rugged and can handle almost anything off-pavement. On road, you don't need to worry much about jumping curbs, hitting potholes or going over railroad tracks. On the other hand, the ride isn't the greatest.

Weakness:

The top is a little noisy at speed; the resale value isn't good. Parts can be a little tough to find. Only repair I've done was to replace the clutch cable. One dealer had the cable but not the adjusting nut. Another dealer had the adjusting nut but not the cable. The ride is a little rough but I knew that when I bought it.

I owned two Samurais before this Tracker -- currently own two Trackers (a '95 and a '96) and one Samurai. Tracker is very reliable, reasonably comfortable and roomy given it's a two-door sport-ute. I originally purchased it as a "compromise" vehicle since I could only have one car -- I wanted something with four wheel drive, decent fuel economy, reliability and some comfort. I haven't been disappointed, that's why we got another two door hardtop Tracker. I'm currently thinking about getting a new four-door. Only repairs so far have been a clutch cable and new front brakes. It still has the original battery !!

i have beat my tracker like i didn't want it anymore and it still runs great at 114k. i have calmini's 2" suspension and their 3" body lifts and 31 x 10.50 mud tires. ( you can fit 30x9.50's bone stock). i've broken 2 axles playing on rocks but that's my fault and now i carry spares. i weld the rear diff and i'm using a samari rear diff in the front with a lock right locker and i'm getting ready to order calmini's 5.83:1 ring and pinion gears and the 4:1 tcase reduction gears so i can turn 32x9.50 swamper tsl's.

Strength:

Most importantly, it is very reliable. I have had no mechanical problems at all. It also gets great gas mileage. The price is very affordable and came with good options like ABS, power everything, and a nice sound system. After researching I found it to be much cheaper than the other small UTE's, like the Escape. I like sitting up higher than in a regular car because visibility is better. I use the interior cargo space more than I thought I would. I really like the way it looks compared to the boxy CRV or the RAV-4, which reminds me of a bug. Its responsive and fun to drive.

Weakness:

On some kinds of pavement it can be a noisy ride. It is lighter in the back (at least mine is) and will fishtail or hydroplane so you have to drive carefully. What you give up in power with the 4-cylinder you make up in gas mileage. A little more leg room in the backseat would make my grown-up passengers happier. I'm a little concerned that the resale value isn't very good.

I love my 4-door Tracker (or Truckling as my friends call it)! The gas mileage is great. I have a long commute and I consistently get 25-27 MPG. The 4-cylinder engine was difficult to get used to at first (I drove a big V-8 luxury coupe before-Mom's old car!) but I wasn't willing to give up the gas mileage for the V-6. It does fine getting on and off the interstate though, but you do have to push it a little. I love the height; you don't have to climb up or drop down into it. The road clearance has been helpful in trips to New Orleans (lots of potholes). I test drove a red one but hated the tacky upholstery. So I decided on a silver one with gray interior. It looks much better and the light color helps keep it cool here in the Deep South. A center console armrest would be great, but otherwise I like the interior and the AC and stereo are great. As with any SUV you should be careful in wind, it can blow around a bit. I have also hydroplaned several times and was ready to trade vehicles, but then admitted to myself that I was just taking turns and curves too fast in the rain. The cargo space with the seats folded down is awesome. The backseat is a little small but is fine for most people on short trips. I have had no mechanical problems in two years. I had a missing gasket on the front driver's side door which was causing a leak. It was replaced under the warranty, but that has been my only problem. In short, it is a great, affordable, and unique vehicle.

I test-drove a Cherokee but thought it was over-rated for the price. The backseat is worse than my Tracker and is harder to get into. The CRV's seats were more uncomfortable and I didn't like the way

Strength:

Fun and easy to drive, decent milage, goes anywhere, great to park, most repairs are easy to fix and parts are easy to get.

Weakness:

65 MPH speed limit on highways is hard on the 4 cyl engine, but it really can handle whatever you throw at it. Go slow around corners and drive responsibly.

I bought my Tracker used in 1996 with 30,000 miles on it. I now have over 160,000 miles and it has been the best investment I ever made. Replaced the auto trans. at around 130,000 miles but that is about it, other than the usual brakes, hoses etc. The 4WD works great in snow, rain and sand. We use it every weekend at a beach in RI and I've had to use it to pull out Blazers, Explorers etc that got stuck in the sand. I use it to commute to work on the highway 60 miles a day and the ride is comfortable enough for me. I'm hooked on Trackers and my next car will be a Tracker if this one ever goes.

Strength:

This thing almost never gets stuck unless you high center it. Stock tires held up well to snow and mud, so far 46,000 miles on them and going to replace them soon. Basically just a real fun vehicle.

Weakness:

A little noise and not a real smooth ride, but its a 4 wheel drive so what can you expect. More of a two seater than a four seater so limited cargo space.

So far so good with the Tracker. I did have some warranty work done on the transmission, but that's about it. So far it's started everytime in -40 degrees celcius weather, made it threw snow, ice, and slush covered roads without a problem. The summers it's great although no AC in mine so it gets a little hot.

Strength:

Very rugged chassis and drive line. Very easy to work on; a mechanic's dream. Just barely peppy enough to not kill gas milage. Easy to store and park. Lots of storage room for such a short wheel base if you don't need the back seat. Fun in summer, fun in winter.

Weakness:

Considering price, mpg, and capabilities I haven't determined there to be any real weaknesses.

This is a great car for a safe driver. FACT: the smaller the vehicle you drive the more common sense and caution must be exercised. Owned it for only 2000 miles so can't comment on reliability but most all the problems I've read about I can repair. Have always driven trucks so I'm used to the poor hi-speed handling and braking. I really like the engine/mechanical design ie: timing chain, out in the open water pump, adjustable timing, individual coil boxes at the spark plugs, true truck style 4X4, etc. (more like a truck than car) I have the convertable; s is a breeze but rear top's a pain - takes practice to get quick at it. It turns, parks and handles great. Fits anywhere and leaves plenty of room in the garage. With rear seat bottom removed and seat back folded down you have lots of room. Gas milage is good - 25 mpg arround town. don't like the tires but that can be changed. I expect it to be a good off road and snow vehicle by the way it's built but that has its' drawbacks on the highway (ya can't have everything). Lacks high quality, plush interior accompaniments & instramentation as on a RAV4 but who cares about that crap - only some hi-class bimbo that belongs in a RAV or CRV but can't afford it. Over all I'm very pleased with it and I'm glad my wife chose it.
