Strength:

It does get good gas mileage.

Weakness:

I recently tried to sell my tracker which only has 11,000 miles on it and it's a 2001 only to find out that after I paid $18,500 for it barely 2 years later it's only worth $7,500 trade in and it's in beautiful shape.

My tracker has had mechanical problems since I first brought it home, everything from leaking oil to four wheel drive problems. It handles badly in high winds or on corners. I feel the vehicle is unsafe and as many others have found chevy does not seem to care.

I've had lots of chevy's over the years and am very unhappy with the tracker. Certainly not the top of the line for chevy.

Strength:

rock solid reliable. Never a problem, always started. Cant say enough about its reliability.

Weakness:

Hard to steer on windy days, needs more power.

1993 geo {chevy} tracker, owned for almost 7 years. Put about 65,000 miles on it. NOT ONE single problem other than 2 headlights and a new exhaust. Super reliable. Hard to handle on windy days, good on gas. Great 4 wheel drive. Would recommend to anyone.

Model Reviewed: Chevrolet Tracker 4cyl 4WD

Strength:

Have done nearly 29,000 miles in less than 2 years and have had no major problems. I must note that the dealer from who I purchaced the car, has the best customer service and mechanics I have ever dealt with.

Weakness:

Extremely unstable in crosswinds, almost to the point of dangerous. Too narrow for its height. Back seats are useless to anyone over 5ft tall. Windows rattle and are loose. I was told that you were able to switch from RWD to 4WD while driving, it is difficult to do without grinding the gears, no matter what speed you are driving. If you need to switch back to RWD to make a sharp turn, it does not disengage right away forcing you to drive into the other lane while making the turn. Automatic windows are too slow. Headlights flicker off and on while driving at night. Due to the airbag location in the steering wheel, the horn is difficult to find and operate. And last, there is no arm rest between the front seats which can be uncomfortable for the passenger.

Cute Exterior, good gas mileage. Other than that, we're getting rid of it.

Strength:

After 60,000 miles absolutely no repairs needed. A lot of low-end torque for 1.6 liter. 5 speed shifter is a lot of fun and does not need to be downshifted as often as 4 cylinder cars might need to be on hills or for accelerating during merger or passing. Forward visibility is great from the huge windows. Gas mileage for 2 WD conertible averaged 34 mpg for 4 years. Head-Room. Very crashworthy. A car both my kids and my mother think's is very cool! Good access for a disabled driver or front seat passenger. Very Good Heater/AC. Great gas mileage [34 mpg average for us]Solid, sturdy build quality is obvious. Delco CD player is A1!

Weakness:

Wind Noise. Vulnerable to Cross Winds. O.E. tires never wore out, but gave lousy traction in winter conditions. No space behind back seat for much of anything [groceries/luggage etc. don't fit when rear seat is in use]. Front seats lack support and rearward seat adjustment. Convertible top is difficult to take down and putting it back correctly requires patience and daylight. Very easy for amateur thiefs to break into as top simply un-zips. Don't leave anything [CDs, purse, camera etc.]in plain sight in a parking lot. Consider a removable hard-top for about 1k that includes a rear defroster and locks securely. Interior materials a little on the cheapish side.

I bought this car because I always wanted one and after 10 years I splurged and bought a new one as a third car. In May of 1998[1998 2dr Convertible] It exceeded my expectations in every way except the drivers seat did not move far enough back for someone my size [6-4/ 300lbs]. Driving this neat little convertible reminded me of my first two cars rolled up into 1 [Triumph TR-250 Convertible & Volvo 122S]in the very early 70's. Solid and nimble convertible=Fun for me. A sleeping teenage girl ran a stop light and hit us [my wife, 2 year old son and I] at 50mph and we were not injured seriously though the car was totalled. That was 9 months ago and we really miss the Tracker. A very safe vehicle to be sure. We have taken long and short trips with this car during the 4 years we had it and have gone to Florida [4 adults]in it. It moves and handles nicely, but it lacks the creature comfort and space of a larger vehicle and it can be tiring to sit in it for excessive periods.

Strength:

Zippy, great in town good on trips, easy to park, great stereo.

Weakness:

non as of yet except the cruise controll.

Great car I reviewed many cars and had a to have rear wheel drive and enough room for the wife dog and Bikes. This fits the bill in a great compact. took it to the mountains and it was fine except that you cannot use the cruise controll as it downshifts at about 60 if there is any drag on the engine. other than that has been great, gas milage was better at high altitudes went from 350 miles to a tank to 400. Have had no problems at all

Strength:

Fuel economy; relative quiet and comfort compared to other soft-top 'utes; ease of use, traction and safety of four-wheel drive; zippy & maneuverable; reliable. Reliability, economy and four-wheel drive are probably the best selling points of this vehicle.

Weakness:

Very limited interior space; passenger area is fine for me (6') but there is virtually no cargo room in back with the rear seat in the upright position. Also, the rear seat is not easily removed. The top can be noisy at speed but is better than other soft-top 'utes. It's not terribly powerful but gets the job done. It seems capable of driving all day at no less than 65mph and I've gone as fast as 85. Also, the rear curtain is difficult to remove and limits the ability to easily load taller items in the cargo area. Limited interior room, in my opinion, limits the overall usefulness of the vehicle.

I owned Samurais before this Tracker but couldn't find another Samurai in decent condition so I took a chance on this. It's a great little vehicle -- gets about 27 mpg consistently with the 2dr, five speed (low, 24mpg/high 32). The soft-top is more quiet than the Samurais and Jeeps I've had in the past -- especially on the freeway. You won't mistake the vehicle for a passenger car on the highway, but I recently completed an 1,100 miles trip in relative comfort travelling about 65mph most of the time. Four-wheel drive operates reliably and the traction is superb. It's not a great off-highway vehicle -- like a Samurai -- but the greater comfort, room and power (96 horsepower versus 66) makes it a better all-around vehicle. It's a better all-weather runabout than an off-road warrior. Bottom line: I'm considering a new four-door ZR2 before the new Tracker replacement goes into production. Overall, these are pretty decent vehicles if you can live with their limitations and quirks.

Strength:

Great Sound system! Two Tone Black/Silver with running boards, so it doesn't look like a cheap SUV or a KIA.

Weakness:

High Headrest in the rear. Not much leg room in the back for Adults. And the Wind. Also will get wider tires.

I have my Tracker4Dr LT for a little over 2 months and I LOVE IT! I went from a Ford Explorer that was a total gas hog to a great 4x4 SUV, that has just as much power as my V8 5.0 Explorer did. As I read the reviews on this SUV I notice alot of positive features, I do agree that the with the wind and living in New England you have to hold on to the wheel alittle tighter than my other SUV.

ITS A TRACKER - and yes it has a center arm rest and a CD

Weakness:

None

We bought this 96 Tracker new and it has not spent a day in the dealers shop other then for routine maintenance - We have never had problems in the snow nor with HIGH WINDS - We liked the Tracker well enough that we purchased a new 2003 ZR2 Tracker 4dr 6cylinder automatic (we just couldn't bring ourselves to trade in the 96 so we kept it)and with the 4door models I have no fear of 70-80MPH driving in winds

Strength:

Improved handling in windy conditions, especially side winds. Improved power with the V6 engine. Plenty of headroom and excellent visibility. The addition of center arm rests was a big plus for improved comfort during long trips.

Weakness:

Exhaust system noise. Engine alternately surges and decelerates when in cruise control and going down steep hills. Transmission lurches rather severely when cold and first put in drive.

We had leased a '99 Tracker, 5 door with the bigger 4 cylinder engine. We really enjoyed the '99 except that it was severely underpowered. When our lease was up we bought our 2002 LT, which is equipped with a V6 engine. The little SUV is a joy to drive, and now has plenty of power for passing, cruising the hills of Wyoming and Colorado and even towing smaller trailers. The LT handles considerably better in the wind than the '99 did ... thanks, perhaps, to the addition of the lower body panels and the additional weight of the V6 engine. The only fly in the ointment preventing total enjoyment of this little SUV is the extremely noisy exhaust system. At all speeds, but specially between 50-60 MPH it sounds like you're inside a Piper Cub airplane; the exhaust noise is like that of a piston airplane engine. We took it to the dealer and they said they "didn't hear anything abnormal", so evidently the noise is a characteristic of the little beast?
