Strength:
Powerful engine, great brakes, great looks, comfortable, as well as roomy.
Weakness:
Price and expensive to fuel. I think this is an outstanding vehicle. It has a great deal of power with a very smooth ride. The brakes are very good, the handling is outstanding. Sharp turns can be negotiated with relative ease for an SUV. The Durango sits relatively lower than other SUVs, has wider Goodyear tires, hence more stability. The gas mileage is somewhat poor, but few trucks or SUV's get great gas mileage. The interior is very roomy, and it can seat 7 comfortably. The seats fold down for added storage space. This truck glides up hills with ease, and is so comfortable that it seems you are sitting in your own living room and not behind the wheel. The keyless entry and automatic features provide an added bonus. If you like powerful acceleration, bad boy looks, and reliability, as well as comfort, this is a very good buy. I would rate this vehicle as the best I have driven. Similar Products Used: Toyota 4 Runner. The Durango has far better acceleration, looks, and comfort. If you plan to keep a vehicle for a long time the Durango is a better buy. Inevitably, after several years of hard driving some parts will have to be replaced. Toyota parts are expensive and even routine repairs can be two to three times more costly. The 4 Runner has a very weak engine and little acceleration power. As an off road and power enthusiast, my experience with the Durango has been far more pleasing than my 2 years with a leased 4 Runner. |

Strength:
Power,the ride, looks, feel, etc...
Weakness:
I have not found any yet, considering brand new We'll the only reason I am posting a review so early is that it is sad to see all these negitive postings. I realize a lot of the poor ratings are coming from 99' or older Durango's. To be honest I took a lot of the previous postings in a strong consideration, but everyone I know that owns one they absoultly love it. I have been a die hard chevy person my whole life, but I have seen a decline in the quality GM is putting out latley. So I took into consideration of the current low financing and employee benifits of Dodge and bought a fully stocked Durango. For anyone looking for a good engine the 4.7 is great 235hp and good gas mileage (for an suv) Similar Products Used: none I have owned. |

Weakness:
I have 70,000 miles on the vehicle and I have had to spend over $6,000.00 in repair over the last year. I had to rebuild the engine because both engine heads cracked. Two friends have had the same problem. Completely rebuild the transmission (both soft and hard parts), replace the leaking front shock absorbers, and rebuild the transfer case. I will never buy another Dodge again for as long as I live. Similar Products Used: Toyota 4-Runner. I had over 200,000 miles on my 4-Runner without ANY major repairs. The 4-Runner wasn't as powerfull but MUCH more reliable. |

Strength:
looks, power, ride, roomy... mixed with a good used car bumper to bumper warranty that will take me to 100,000 miles, i am confident i will enjoy this vehicle for a long time.
Weakness:
rusty window trim, bug vacuum (see below) i had looked at used Durangos for a while and i noticed the rusty window trim problem. the vehicle i purchased had one of the 4 trims just beginning to rust on the molding and i talked the salesperson into replacing it for free. the other 3 were fine. i have only had 1 real problem with it... and this is gonna sound strange. the vehicle is an insect vacuum. we drive the majority of the time with the windows down. i have only owned the vehicle for 2 months, but i have been hit in the head twice and my wife 5 times by insects sucked in thru the front windows while sitting in the front. tho i have no basis, i would think cycle riders get hit less than this. we have tried driving with the back windows up thinking that may be the cause. it seemed to be working until a moth smacked my wife in the forehead :) other than that, i believe it to be a beautiful vehicle that i hope to last me a long while with the proper maintainence. for those of you having difficulties after the manufacturers warranty expires there is an option out there... there are few very good, inexpensive extended warranty providers that, as long as you maintain and dont mistreat the vehicle, will fix most major problems with minimum cost to you. i know and understand that vehicles shouldnt break for quite a while and that this leads to the perception that the manufacturer sucks and provides shoddy work, but in my personal experience, every midrange manufacturer (ford, chevy, dodge, etc) has its lemons within every line of automobiles it makes. some durangos may never have a major problem... and some will constantly have them. there are of course the trend issues like the rusty molding that you want to look out for... Similar Products Used: 1991 Chevy Blazer S-10 4x4: other than a rusting issue this vehicle was fantastic. with proper maintainence it lasted us 177,000 hard miles. we took it on several long trips (3600 mi round trip) into remote canada where pot-hole and sharp-rock filled gravel and dirt roads are considered highways :) we lost several tires to the roads (including 2 of my shiny new Uniroyal Laredo AWTs), but the Blazer kept on goin. the Durango is going to be our new Canada express... so it better be good ;) the blazer had a nice comfortable and roomy back seat (not like the newer ones... they suck on comfort) and an adequate cargo area. the durango has an equally comfortable back seat and the cargo area behind it is even bigger than the blazers. the ride is better in the durango and it has more power. the blazer received a solid 20 mpg... the durango gets 14.5 most of the time. this equates to the blazer being able to travel 340 mi on a tank of gas and the durango only 305... something to keep in mind when travelling in remote areas where gas stations are sparse and gas is more expensive than your wildest imagination. |

Strength:
roomy, power for towing,
Weakness:
cheap, service dept sucks (Kari Dodge, Kalsipell) multiple problems I have had problems with the transfer case not engaging, and now have my 3rd transfer case. It took 7 trips to the local dealer before they agreed there was a problem. I took it to another dealer to get the 3rd t.c. put in, and refuse to go to local dealer. have had multiple problems, windows failing, headlamp switch failing, windshield stripping coming out, a lot of little problems but the transfer case is my biggest issue, as I live where winter is here for 8 months of the year. I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone. I also had a 97 dakota, and it leaked through weld seams that failed. Am unable to lemon law as my problems started at 14k, and lemon law starts at 12k. Am going to voluntary repo. Similar Products Used: doesn't even come close to Toyota |

Strength:
We did a fair amount of comparison before purchasing the durango, and felt that it was a good choice. 3 dogs, a kid, and the occasional need to tow plus the 4wd and power were nice as well
Weakness:
the tranny just blew with 26000 miles, and will need to be either replaced or opened up as it appears to be a hard part failure. still under warranty, but now i am having serious questions as to reliability. i have also noted a couple of glitches with the power windows not functioning, but that was intermittent. Overall, until the recent problems with the transmission, we were very satisfied with the vehicle. Unfortunately, when the transmission fails during highway driving under routine use, reliability comes into question. Doubly frustrating when you are traveling from one state to another, as we were...child and dogs and all... argh. No extensive towing history in the vehicle, no real off road use to speak of, just what appears to have been a faulty transmission. Of course, the gas mileage is poor, but that is to be expected in a big v8, no matter how much they round off the corners. power comes at a price... Similar Products Used: test drove jeeps, blazers, explorers, but the size and power of the durango, coupled with the styling made it my choice. |

Dodge Durango SLT+ 5.9 L
Strength:
5.9L with 3.92 gears is a pulling machine
Weakness:
Dodge dealer repair shops in the Minneapolis area inhale deeply (suck). I have all my repairs done by independents. I have a loaded 99 Durango SLT+ with almost every single option. I love this truck! I can pile the wife, 2 kids, two cats, and hook up to my 23' Airstream travel trailer and go camping. The only thing I don't worry about is my Durango, it always starts, it always is ready to go. I have done normal maintenance on it, it is a great truck. I just ordered another one today. Similar Products Used: I traded a 96 Chevy Tahoe and never looked back, it is easier to drive and has been much more dependable. Chevy ads say "Like a rock", and that wasw about how useful my Tahoe was. |

Strength:
Power, good stero system, nice interior, roomy.
Weakness:
Been in the shop 7 times in the past 3 months. Rear window motor was replaced, pinging noise from under hood due to oil leaking into the intake manifold, air bag problem, heat flapper was replaced, air conditioning quit working, replaced windshield wipers cause they split, leaking freon, terrible on gas mileage..... and the dealorship tells me that these are all normal issues. Yea right!!!! on a vehicle that is barely a year old. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! This suv has had alot of serious issues. Do yourself a favor and spend half as much for a another vehicle that you want have any problems with a eliminate the headaces...... Similar Products Used: I test drove all suv's and this one felt the most powerful and comfortable. |
