Strength:

Great Looks.Paint quality. 3rd Seat.
Power.4 wheel drive.Exhaust sound (if you like that kind of thing)
Just the right size.

Weakness:

Gas milage.
Poor OEM tires (badyears)

I leased this vehicle for 3 years and for the first 2 1/2 I had zero problems. Now two of the windows don't work (seems like a common problem)and the front-end seems a little loose with only 31,000 mile on it to this point.Seems that it starts having major problems around 40,000 miles.
Love the third seat with 3 grandkids. Its almost worth it for this option.
Replaced all 4 tires after about 20,000 miles because they were so bad and bought BFGoodrich all seasons.Big difference.
Love this truck but I have read that many people have problems. Guess its the luck of the drawer. You could get a lemon mercedes also.
Will lease another one.

Strength:

First American car I ever drove, and am quite happy. Great storage, infinate cup holders, comfortable seating, cool looking. I got it just when they came out (in bright red, no less) and people stopped me all the time to ask about it. I have had no MAJOR problems with it, unlike a lot of people who bought the 98's.

Weakness:

Terrible gas mileage, cheap interior (the first time I put the lights on the knob pulled right out of the dashboard,) drives and is noisy like a big truck, had problems with the A/C, engine light, ABS brakes, but the problems were all sensors.

I am glad I got the Durango. I almost bought a Infinity SUV (my husband has an Infinity) but the dealership here is a nightmare, so I made the right choice. It is definately not a plush SUV, but it can haul stuff like no other of its' size. I drove the 2000 2WD and that drove much nicer, but I still can't complain too much about my Durango. My lease is up in 30 days and believe it or not, I am going to get a Jaguar. Talk about going from one extreme to the other. I will miss the space, though, but I think it is time for me to get a car of awhile.

Strength:

1st SUV. Very powerful go anywhere vehicle. Just what I was looking for. Great towing capability. Excellent on or off-road. Good clearance. Roomy enough for family and things at the same time. 51,000 miles and still going strong. The best way to describe is "Solid". Have carried 7 adults with no problems. 5.9L is a must for this vehicle. Easy to reach controls and excellent location of gauges, not idiot lights.

Weakness:

Needs brake upgrade on all models. In this price range should have 4 wheel disc with ABS. Goodyear Wrangler RT/S 31x10.5x15 held up ok, but will replace with better constructed and better wet road traction. Large mirrors create bad blind spots.

So far this is the best vehicle I have ever owned ( knock on wood). I am very proud of my decision to buy. At the time of purchase(Feb. 99) Durango stood alone in it's class. Now it stands head and shoulders above all those trying to be Durango. Best look, styling and options available. In my experience when they say "Built Ram Tough" they mean it.

I have been a passenger in Ford Bronco, Ford Explorer, Chevy Blazer and to many pick-ups to mention. None have a better ride, none have a better feel of power and none can compare to the quality construction.

Strength:

Very soid and comfortable ride considering it IS after all a truck. Gobs of power and towing is a breeze. Looks are dominating, this truck screems "Get Out Of My Way!". The exhaust note make you want to keep the window down even in the coldest of weather. Lots of room, even third-row seats are acceptable to adults for short trips. Fit and finish is tastefull and near perfect even though there is a lot of plastic trim inside. Everything is very ergonomically designed. Radio controls on the back of the steering wheel are a big convenience and safety bonus. Plenty of stopping power with 4-wheel disc brakes, saved my @$$ when a Suburban cut in front of me.

Weakness:

Gas guzzler. A little noisy on the highway probably from the larger mirrors and the addition of the Vent-shades. But the safety of those large mirrors makes up for that. Would have been nice to have 'scan' and 'mute' features on the stereo controls.

Hey Dodge boys: Home run! A great vehicle. Fully intend on purchasing it at the end of the lease. Very pleased. Unless you are sooooo picky about certian things, you'll find that the pros far outweigh the minute cons that this truck has. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone who is looking for that, as their slogan says..... 'different' suv. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me: john.warnet@aspenpubl.com

Power and space. 5.9 V8, and lift up rear seat are awesome. Interior space is great without bulk of Suburbans and Expeditions. Looks great too.

Weakness:

Lights are really weak. ALso interior is too plastic. Leather seats are not as fine as I would like. Noisy on road, but aggressive tires and large mirrors are probably the reason.

Loved the car. It ate a lot of gas, but if you can't afford it don't buy it. The car looked and rode great. It was a little truck-like in ride, but refined enough. Good off-road too.

Strength:

Roomy inside, right size outside, powerful by present standards, stable, and good looking

Weakness:

Fuel economy, some forward visibility issues from large mirrors

ZERO problems in 27,500 miles. This is a very good tow vehicle. It is comfortable on longer trips (16-18 hours) and is easy to drive long distances on the Interstates because it tracks well and doesn't have any bad habits. Traction with stock tires is decent in parking lots with six inches of snow. The Dodge cargo area cover compares poorly to the Ford counterpart, but all the other numerous Dodge accessories I have installed are just fine. A K&N air filter and synthetic oil seem to have helped the mileage a little bit.

Much better room, stability, power, brakes, interior storage space, and cup holders than my previous 1990 Ford Explorer Sport. Also fewer problems - the Ford had a few minor ones, but the Dodge has had ZERO. But the Ford's JBL stereo was better than the decent Infinity stereo in the Dodge, and the Ford also had better front seats.

If there's one thing that Dodge does better than ANY of the other SUVs out there (and I'm talking to YOU, Lexus/Infinity/Mercedes/BMW/Acura and ESPECIALLY Lincoln!) is that the styling on the Durango WALKS all over everybody else. The line is three years old, and I STILL get people asking what kind of a vehicle I'm driving! Took a trip out to hicksville, Iowa and thought the whole town would get whiplash from craning their necks to stare!

The one thing that is pleasantly surprising with the Durango is how stable it feels while manuvering. In comparison, the blazer and explorer REALLY feel top heavy. While you shouldn't forget that it STILL is an SUV, so you just CAN'T take that corner at 30 mph, at the same time you CAN take it at 15 mph and not kiss the pavement with the side of your face. (Really! Go drive a Blazer, then drive a Durango, and you'll see what I mean! No comparison!)

The people who should buy a Durango are people who are looking for something larger than a Blazer/Explorer, but aren't ready to have to build a three car garage just for their Expedition/Excursion/Yukon. From the rear wall to the back of the front seats is roughly 6'5", plenty bigger than a Blazer/Explorer.

Oh yeah, the 7500 trailer weight towing capacity doesn't hurt, either! (Note: special options required for that; ~4200 trailer weight towing capacity standard.) One of the first things I did after buying my Durango was tow a car with it. The Durango barely noticed that it was towing something behind it. It really handled doubling of the weight with aplomb.

Strength:

Looks -- sweet; no comparison among SUV's.
Power -- OK (see weaknesses); plenty of power for every day driving, but could use a little more.
4WD -- Excellent! Before I bought this, I rented an almost identical one. I took it to upstate NY in December and tried to get it stuck. Buried in a mud/snow mixture up to the doors and it walked right out.....I bought one within a month. Since then, have played and played with mine, and its 4WD abilities are unparalleled. Of course, you have to be careful not to bury it and then rip your front license plate off trying to come out in reverse...
Stereo -- I got the CD with Infinity premium sound, and don't have the complaints others do about the sound being at your feet. It could feel a little higher, b/c as it is it kind of hits you in your chest. It's a good factory system, though, if you just want to pump Metallica or old Van Halen.........
Seats -- I love my power leather seat.....'nuff said.
Acceleration.....not bad......add cold air induction from Mopar performance, Flowmaster exhaust and a performance ignition, and it gets better.........as another critic on this board mentioned, bolt on a blower, and all is well.......
Unless you want to spend $20K more on an import SUV....which you are NOT going to take out and bury in the mud.....nothing can touch it....

Weakness:

Gas mileage -- who the hell buys an SUV and then complains about mileage? Not me......
Power -- this vehicle needs another 75-100 hp, and I resent having to add it myself........if it had around 300-325 hp, and an attendant torque increase, it would be perfect

If you want the SUV that looks and feels solid and mean, buy the Durango. If you are going to whine about gas mileage, buy a Subaru wagon. This is simply the best-looking, most solid, mud and snow-eating, wash and wax it and drive it to the theatre SUV out there. BMW, Lexus, Mercedes SUV owners, eat your hearts out.......you should have bought a Durango and an old muscle or sports car.......life would be better for you if you had. Now go, go all of you and buy a Durango!!

*** Of course, if you wait and buy the new hybrid Durango, I won't fault you for it!

Strength:

It's looks struck me first. Second, was seating, I could fit my three kids without having one sit next to another, and listen to them fight over who touched who first. Third, looks. Fourth, Roomy and Comfortable. Fifth, Looks. Sixth, Very powerful at first, now it seems to be losing it's oomph. Seventh, Looks.

Weakness:

Gas mileage! If only I had realized what 11 city, and 13 local, REALLY meant.
Electric windows occasionally fail. One day it will be one of the rear windows, next it will be one of the front windows.
High cost maintenance, had to replace the brakes at 16k.
Pinging noises from the engine at higher RPMs.
Alignment has already had to be repaired, a problem I had never had on any other vehicle I owned.
Rear seats release is very hard to flip. Most of the time I don't bother, and gave up on telling the kids not to step on the leather seats.

Loved my Durango for the first year, now we're well into the second and I'm becoming disenchanted. I still love the compliments. But I realize now that it was it's looks that dragged me in. It costs me well over $30a week in gas, with the high costs of fuel here.
