Model Reviewed: Durango SLT + Limited

Strength:

Powerful 5.9L engine, 250 horses and lots of towing power.
3rd seat allows for many passengers. Infinity stereo system sounds great for a stock system. Tall ride height is also good. Limited model's two colors set ti apart from all of the other SUV's on the road. Pretty good acceleration for such a heavy car ( when O/D is turned off)

Weakness:

Fuel efficiency is bad. It rides, handles, and steers like a truck, but then again it kind of is a truck. Parking it is also kinda hard

For the 39 G's I paid, it was a lot more expensive than the stock SLT model.. But it was worth it. Basically the Limited came with every option incl the 5.9L engine, leather, Infinity stereo, wooden dash accents, rear air, third bench.. the list goes on. Plus its black with driftwood flares and highlites, whichmake it unique even among other Durangos. I strongly recommend getting a Limited model if you can find one.

It is a lot roomier and more comfortable than Ford Explorer, which i had before. As well as more acceleration and better clearance.

Strength:

styling, well laid out interior, 3rd seat

Weakness:

underpowered, fuel hog, lumpy seats, suspect quality control

The Durango is my wifes vehicle, she likes the looks of it which is the primary reason we bought it. It has more style than a "minivan".

Automotive performance is disappointing. Unladen acceleration is tepid. Fuel economy is around is 9-10 mpg. I have used it to tow a 3500 lbs. boat on a double axle trailer from the Bay Area to the Delta. It did not do as well as my 6 cyl GMC. I would not trust taking it to Tahoe.
Other Durango owners say they have plenty of power so it may be that ours is a dog. Dodge says there is nothing wrong with it.

We have had a fair amount of problems with it. The drivers window stuck down after we had it for two months. Dodge serviced it under warranty but the part was back ordered for a week and a half which meant we drove our brand new vehicle around with a sheet of visqueen taped over the window.

There was a defect in the front right brake assembly that caused a plate to rub against the disk and score it. It was fixed under warranty. Two days in the shop.

The rear AC went out at six months, another day in the shop. After we got it back the headliner started sagging, we have not had time to take it back in for that yet.

The seats are kind of lumpy and have no lumbar support. That coupled with the harsh ride gives me a backache after about a half hour in the vehicle. No one else in the family has this problem.

My wife has kinda cooled on the vehicle. I never did like it. If we wouldn't take such a financial hit for selling it we would probably get rid of it.

Strength:

Great looks, powerful engine with lots of torque, very robust styling, comfortable enough, spacious, ingenious seat design.

Weakness:

Horrendous base stereo, SUV fuel mileage, interior design is practical but could be a little more sleek, seat flip level uncomfortably placed, limited available safety features

The Dodge Durango is an excellent SUV. It's not too big and not too small, very comfortable, and you can feel the wrath of its engine! It is easily the best-looking SUV out there. It won't handle like a sports car, but if you're looking for an SUV, look no further. You might want to invest in a better stereo, however.

Strength:

Powerful V8 Engine, sits up high - but not too high, Roomy interior, plenty of seating, nice standard features, and best of all it looks great!

Weakness:

It gets lower gas mileage than other vehicles, but that is to be expected in an SUV with such a large engine. Still, it isn't so bad that I am complaining.

It may be too early for me to rate this vehicle, but so far I don't have any complaints. It rides and handles very nice for a truck-type vehicle. I am 6'2" and can comfortably sit in any seat. The rear bench option is a must. The outside seats on the middle bench fold and tumble to provide easy access to the rear bench seat. We have two carseats and it is a breeze moving them around from seat to seat as needed. The rear bench also easily folds down leaving plenty of cargo room.

The dash gauges and controls are easily visible and accessible while driving. My wife has a semi-hard time with the "blind-spots" created by the front supports on either side of the windshield. I think it may be because she is used to a much smaller car. Anyway, the salesman explained that they were somewhat wider because of the steel reinforced supports.

Overall, I enjoy driving the vehicle. I personally think that it is one of the best in it's class (value and quality) and it looks good!

Strength:

Interior and exterior design

Weakness:

fuel economy, dated engine and chassis

Interior and exterior

Very well thought off interior design practical and functional. I'm 6'1" and the comfortable seating position, legroom and spacious surroundings where a major point in the buying decision. The third seat option is a must and adds to the truck's versatility. The double a/c unit is also very useful in hot climates because of the large interior space. Dash ergonomics are ok and the materials used are acceptable, except for the black plastic that houses all the gauges and controls which feels, looks, and sounds very cheap.
The exterior design is the most outstanding feature of this vehicle, it looks extemely good and I cannot think of any other one in this category that surpasses it.

Engine and chassis

The 5.2L V8 is an outdated design. For an engine this size It's specs are not too good. Fuel economy is dismal. I know some may say that if you buy an SUV you should no be looking at fuel economy but this day and age you should be getting at least 3 or 4 mor MPG. We have been monitoring ours continously through the truck's own computer and have averaged 11 MPG. Read one review that says they are getting 14 city and 18 highway and is incomprehensible to me. We have installed Autolite double platinum plugs, use only syntethic oil, and installed a K&N air filter to no avail. New engines like the ones on the new C&K GM pick ups are much more efficient in every way. They make more HP and torque with less displacement, which translates in better MPG.
The chassis is rugged but needs more refinement. Ride is stiff and bouncy.

Reliability

We have had our share of problems. There is an interior a/c water leak that has not been corrected in three trips for service. Had brake problems, one window is not functioning and the seat moving mechanism for the rear seat is vey stiff and difficult to operate on the passenger side. Other than that no major problems after 27k miles.

Conclussion

It has it's drawbacks but we still like this truck very much. It's size and design makes it unique.

Weakness:

Fuel economy, but my company pays, so who cares.

We currently hav the Durango and the Explorer ( 95 XLT ) and I would pick the Durango over the Explorer each and every time. I'm a large man, 6'6" 245 lbs., and the Durango just fits my body type much better. The Ford will actually hurt my back on long trips.

Love the truck.

Strength:

Great styling and superior reliability. I checked with a mechanic friend that owns his own shop. He stated that most Dodge products have reliability that is far superior to Ford or GM SUV's. He did state that when some thing does break it can ba a pain to fix as so many oif the systems are interconnected and work together . He claims that he repairs Dodge products about half as often as Ford. He states that FORD Expedition and Explorer are really over rated. The factory towing package is far superior to FORD or GM. Includes oversize radiator, oversize battery and heavy duty electrical system, transmission cooler, and power steering cooler. Also, reas seat in Durango has far more headroom that Expedtion. I have 14 year daughter that complaind that her head hit the roof of Expedition. There is far more head room in the Durango. I am 6 ft. tall, 220 lbs, and I can fit in the back with some headroom to spare. The seat is not quite as comfortable as Expedtion, but OK for kids/ average size adults

Weakness:

Only drivers seat has electric adjusments. None om PAX seat.

Top of the line package with, rear A/C, CD/Tape/radio, Tow Package, 5.2 litre engine, heated mirrors, leather interior,

Great power (5.9L V8), great looks, good dealership, good off-road capabilities!

Weakness:

Gas milage, but we don't buy trucks for that reason!

Test-drove many other SUVs, but the Durango was the best driving by far! It felt so much more "solid" than the Japanese SUVs (Pathfinder, 4Runner). Had much more power and room than the rest also. Awesome looks, great power (5.2 V-8), lots of room for cargo and passengers (3rd row seat). Comfortable seating & appointments (leather & not at all stripped-down )and great handling. 4WD gives driver inner peace in winter.

Weakness:

none

I've owned at least 13 4-wheeled vehicles over the past 30 years - sporty coupes & convertibles, a small pick-up, a full-sized van, a "luxury" car, original VW beetles and rag-top Jeeps - and have enjoyed, and been sentimentally attached to, each one in its own time. I was basically a 2-3 year owner and then it was on to something else. But I really, really do like my current vehicle, the Durango, in a way unlike the others.

* It's curb appeal is what initially hooked me (gotta drive something that looks good!) but everything else about it is what keeps me from even considering a change.
* The 4WD option has drastically reduced sweaty palms when I'm driving in Wisconsin winter weather, which I do often because of my job. I even smiled while driving in snow with my D this past winter!
* The interior room is incredible - I can haul a ton of stuff & still close the rear door; and I can taxi 7 or 8 friends anywhere without one sitting on another's lap. And one friend with a lower back problem looks forward to riding in my D because the seats are so comfortable.
* It handles & manuvers very well. And interior things, like the radio/CD/cassette player, heater & air conditioner and cruise all work superbly, with controls easily reachable.
* It rides very comfortably, moreso than some cars I've owned. But, yes, it is basically a truck, so it's gonna ride more like a truck than a Cadillac!
* And I'm pleased with my gas mileage. I average 18 mpg on the highway and around 14 mpg in town. It's a V-8 with some guts, not a little 4- or 6-banger that can get 30 mpg but may sputter when you want to pass someone!!

All in all, I LOVE this vehicle. And you're going to have to use a crowbar to separate me from it for a long time to come!!
