Durango R/T
Strength:
looks,5.9 power,rims,stereo,two tone interior,the flame red paint,exhaust,easily modified,great handling
Weakness:
MPG and sometimes the 46RE tranny makes a loud thump noise but a rare occasion first I had a black '00 SLT+ loved that truck but saw the R/T and had to have it. loved the stock exhaust but I wanted more so I cut in a flowmaster muffler now it sounds really good, Jet performance chip ,QuickD Ram air intake and bosch +4 spark plugs. with these mods the truck really goes now! I went to Skip Barber racing school and let me tell you this truck really handles thru corners. Infinity stereo is awesome no need for modification there. man when this truck is clean and I mean clean it really stands out. the 17 inch rims are one of the best factory rims I have ever seen. its and easy car to wash and wax comes out very easily. Strength:
I like the handling, the looks, and the size. The third seat option was what I needed, and it serves its purpose for carrying children. Stereo sounded good until the Infinity speakers blew!?
Weakness:
I see I'm not the only one with the power window problems! In addition to the power windows not working was the power locks. One of the back seats is almost impossible to flip up when accessing the third seat. Can someone explain to me, how do Infinity speakers blow using a factory radio and listening to Jazz? Tires definitely need to be addressed. The vehicle serves its purpose of being able to carry extra passengers when needed. The ride is nice as well as driveablity. Fuel cost is a bit high, but it is a SUV. I took a chance on buying an American vehicle. Unfortunately, the quality of parts(or lack thereof) used in this vehicle, the problems experienced with it, and the fact that Chrysler is not willing to stand behind it's vehicles, will lead me elsewhere. There are quite a few Durango's on the Lemon Law list.... Similar Products Used: Ford Expedition. |

Looks, room, turning ablilty.
Weakness:
Windows stop working, wind noise, dodge customer service. I loved the looks of the durango. It drove perfectly for about a month. After that the windows started working sporadically. Then both rear windows stopped working alltogether. The dealership knows about this problem and it seems to be a quite common experience. There is also alot of wind noise at high speeds. It also seems to have some trouble shifting when first starting off. My front windows are starting to go out now. I am thinking of trading it in before I have to chunk another thousand dollars into it. It is definately not worth the money paid. Also, I don't understand why the consumer should have to pay for the problems to be fixed when the problem is so common?????? This will definately be the last dodge that I buy? The customer service reps that I have delt with have been extremely rude. Similar Products Used: None |

MPG(but if you care about this, why buy an SUV?) Wonderful Vehicle!! My first vehicle with less than 35k miles. Perfect. 5.2L V8 is a workhorse, and very capable of powering this beast on/off road. This thing tow's like a Mack Truck, and is comfortable to boot! I haven't had any problems as it seems some people have. My dealer is excellent as far as service and friendliness, truly a 5-star outfit. I've towed 4000lb boats, took several weekend off-roading trips into the Maine woods and never so much as a weird shimmy, squeak or rattle. SOLID! Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Very rigid construction. Acceleration is super: especially 30-60mph (merging on highway). Good sound proofing keeps out highway noise. Seats are comfortable.
Weakness:
The B-pillar just aft of driver's head creates a visual blind zone. A sleek powerful vehicle for on road all weather usa as well as off road expeditions to camp grounds and fishing holes. Lots of interior space that handles my big family well. I test drove 20 different SUV models and this was number one on my list. Although the suspension never lets you forget its a truck, she handles extremely well in tight spaces and is a very tight stable platform at highway speeds. Similar Products Used: Only the Mercury Mountaineer 2002 had signifantly better ride quality. The price, payload, and on-pavement performance is superior to all the Oriental imports. |

Strength:
Power, the 360 is great. Infinity stereo system sounds excellant, but they could use some tweeters in the back, and the fader system is crap. Rides very well, as good, if not better than my C class Mercedes. Good looks.
Weakness:
I think the turning radius is horrible, dont know why so many others like it. Air conditioning could be better, pretty weak when the temp hits the 90's, even with the dual AC system. Other weaknesses are listed in the summary. Got the fully loaded model with everything under the sun. Have not had any of the mechanical problems that I have been reading about; power window failure etc. (actually have had none) I do need to get an alingment though. At 20k, whats up with that? Overall it's been a pretty good vehicle but there are some buggy things that drive me crazy. Why doesnt anyone make a lift kit? The clearance for 4wdving sucks. The rear leaf springs rattle like crazy because of the cheesey plastic insterts and rivits they use. My 74 bug has less rattles than this thing. (And so does my neighbors) The front ball joints are way to small and weak for a vehicle of this size. Im affraid they wont stand up to serious 4wd excursions. Blind spots, there are huge blind spots with in the front with the mirrors and the front window frame. Similar Products Used: Tried the Ford Explorer, over priced, small, dinky engine, piece of crap. Chevy Blazer, too cramped, passanger seat has big bump in it where the exhaust goes. |

Great looks, large motor (360 cid).
Weakness:
Value. Wanted to trade a few months back. Kelly Blue Book will show you a rude awakening. These things DO NOT hold value. Blue booked at 50% of what I paid for it. Still running strong at 60K miles, however, had a "surging" RPM problem (up and down 2-400 while on cruise). Dealer corrected the problem. All I have done with it basically, is change fluids on a regular basis. Still running on orig. brakes. Similar Products Used: Doesn't compare to a Caddy Escalade. To me, that is the finest SUV on the planet. |

Weakness:
RUST!!!! and CHRONIC SQUEALING, CLUNKING BRAKES!!!!! Sucks up gas quicker than the space shuttle. Biggest $30,000.00 MISTAKE I ever made!!!! BEWARE 1998 DURANGO OWNERS..these cars are rusting under the window moldings, and around the rear hatch back interior seal,....CHECK YOURS!!! (no tools req.) Roll windows all the way down, and pull up firmly on rubber molding. Lift back door and look at interior weld. Similar Products Used: Chevy s-10 club cab.........wish we still had it. |

Strength:
Vehicle has a nice ride and decent cargo capability. Goes through snow where nothing else does.
Weakness:
Complete engine failure at 55k miles following normal maintenance schedule and ZERO off-road use. Chrysler's backing? $1500 of a $6000 repair bill. Dealer implied it was not maintained (depsite proof to the contrary) and engine sludge caused the bearing to turn. I like the styling. I like the ride. I like feeling like my wife will not get stuck in the snow during the winter. I tolerate the 14 average MPG. The rear third seat has been great for a family of five. Similar Products Used: There were no other mid-size SUV's at the time - Blazer was too small and Yukon too big. Ford Expedition will likely be the replacement. |
