Ford Bronco (1996 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The Ford Bronco is a sport utility vehicle that was produced from 1966 to 1996, with five distinct generations. The original Bronco was an ORV (Off-Road Vehicle), intended to compete primarily with Jeep CJ models and the International Harvester Scout. The redesign of the second generation Bronco in 1978 was based on a shortened full sized F-100 pickup. It had a removable top and forward folding rear bench seat, similar to the competing Blazer.

(1980 - 1986) The Ford Bronco received a major redesign for 1980, coinciding with the F-Series pick-up truck. The new Bronco was shorter, and had cosmetic changes along with powertrain, suspension and other odds and ends.

(1992 - 1996) The Ford Bronco, along with the F-Series truck, was updated for 1992. The new Bronco was redesigned with safety in mind, incorporating front crumple zones, rear shoulder seat belts, a third brakelight embedded in the removable top, and after 1994, driver-side airbags.

this truck is a bruit it has pushed and pulled some really big sleds out of the mud. this isnt a truck for the week it rides great and is easy to fix when needed they say the dodge is the way. ive pulled them out to! glad i got the manual locking hubs no trouble what so ever !

Weakness:

to heavy but then again its so strong i dont know if you can have the best of both worlds needs to have some big tires for mud im running 33 baha claws but i need 35 or bigger time for a lift kit. the top is also a pain to get on and off would like to see a fast connect setup for it and without the top on the back gets a bit dirty lol but im in front so its ok :)

been mudding for awhile and cant say enough about those light little toyota trucks but then again just cuz they make it through the mud doesnt mean i want to ride in the tin can. get in my truck and you would think you were driving a in a car on the road it takes a serious beating and doesn't punish you the top is great off and really funny when you turn the front wheels to the side and hit it just make sure the person in back has a good sence of humor. been a chevy fan for so long i didnt know how to work on the p.o.s. ford but ive since changed my mind have yet to be able to fix a chevy with the eas i have with the bronco. wish they still made them would like to have a new one ! the front suspension is hated by allot of people but i know i have clearence so hey i deal with the ....... o wait i havent had problems with it so i guess i cant coplain .....

Strength:

Tons of power from the 351. Unbreakable manual tranfer case/manual hub combo. Very nice interior even in XLT. Excellent turning radius. Great approach and breakover angles. Killer looks. One of the few late model trucks with a solid front axel.

Weakness:

Poor fuel mileage ( 12 city, 15 highway). Lots of rattles from interior when on rough roads. Bad departure angle, especially when compared to the excellent approach angle. My 200 watt after market sound system causes extremely annoying vibrations throughout the side panels and doors ( and there aren't even any subs).

If you want a truck that is very solidly built with tons of power and incredible offroad ability (even stock), the Bronco is for you.

Similar Products Used:

Ford 2001 F-250- Obviously cant compare to the power of the 6.8 V10 but is overall better offroad.
Ford 1998 Expedition- Interior of Bronco not as nice but has just as much power and the Bronco tears the Expedition up offroad. IFS and auto 4X4 hurts the Expedition.

Strength:

The body style is one of a kind, you have your blazers and Dodges but they just don,t have that certain Pizzazz, and the short wheel base helps you get over those high humps when offroading,You don,t need a lift I run 31" BF Goodrich AT,s and that just does my just fine, but I still miss my 74 bronco now that was a Beast.

Weakness:

Its hard to find an H pipe for dual exaust, and for those who here a clunk in the transmission your throttle shift cable needs adjusted ,if that don,t work check for play in your drive train,I had the same clunk but not no more.

My wife can,t stand it,(at least thats what she says) She says I drive it to much, but when ever I get in it, you bet your wahzoo she never hesitates to jump in for the ride

Model Reviewed: bronco XL

Strength:

Unbreakable, runs strong, easy to work on, unlimited upgrade potential, all around best vehicle I have ever owned

Weakness:

Only XL trim, but its makes it nice for 4x4 because no power acc. (windows door locks etc.,) to worry about failing

First let me admit I am a chevy/gmc nut, I was totally anti-ford until me and my wife bought this bronc. We got a really good deal because it had 97000 miles when we bought it. Now it has 116000 on the 5.0 and tell you what I am impressed this thing could out climb any of my friends chevs w/ 350's while there locking hubs I'm flying in 2 high. My bias against ford has gone I love this bronc. I had a major tune up when we bought it and I regularly change my fluids, but thats all I've had to do to it, I put new rancho 5000 shocks on cause the stock ones were getting worn and I also added a stering stabilizer since the front end had alot of play(compared to my 98 gmc). I also put new eagle alum. wheels with goodyear AT tires.
The engine compartment is cleaner than most 2000 model trucks I've seen not one spot of oil from the pan or anywhere else. Alot of people tell me to lift it but not for me I,ve taken it in some mean stuff and I still haven't had a clearance problem. I'm not into beauty for vehicles, I feel a lift isn't required for this. unless you want to do some moab stuff or somehting. plus to many people put lifts on their vehicles for looks anymore and not function. I'm all about function. don't get me wrong its a nice looking bronc. but I'm not about to start adding tacky stuff. The only other thing I want to do is add a front and rear recievers for my multi-mount winch(only for serious emergencies). and some off road lights,

So my advice about bronco's is that if you want a versitile 4x4 that is reliable, fun, easy to work on, and strong then get the only original sport utility vehicle, Get a Bronco!!!!!!

Oh yeah by the way my low blue book is still a couple grand more than I owe.

Strength:

Built like a brick sh*thouse. Strong 351. Indestructible C-6 tranny. Live solid front axle. "Free Wheelin'" package as original option -- contains crazy stripes, "rallye bar" , a/c, and sunroof, all stock

Weakness:

Age of my beast rears it's ugly head from time to time with little annoying repairs. Hideous gas mileage. Always battling rust spots.

The '78 - '79 Broncos are a breed unto themselves. These were the biggest Brocs ever produced. Built for life, and tough as nails from the assembly line. The 4X4 system is as solid as they come with manual hubs and NP203 transfer case. I feel sorry for you guys who have some of the newer models, which lack the solid front axle, manual hubs and have neverending electronics which impede fixing things the old fashioned way -- in the driveway. But any Bronco is a good one, except for my buddy's '96, which lost it's front axle TWICE, the a/c system burned (literally), and the radio exploded. Probably a lemon. Thumbs up to the original beasts of burden!

Strength:

Pleanty of power, does exellent in mud even in two wheel drive. For doing as good off road as it does it has a really good ride.
Top comes off.

Weakness:

Gas mileage

Overall i love the truck. the only problem i have had with it was the day after i bought it the transfer case broke but since then no problems. It preforms on and off road very well. It can go through mud and snow but still give a very nice and the road and turn heads. And the best feature of all is the top comes off. if that isn't cool i don't know what is. It is just a fun vehicle to play around with.
the only reason i wouldn't recommend buying it is if you are looking for gas mileage. 10 to 13 miles to the gallon sucks but the cool factor of the Bronco makes up for it.

Strength:

The 5.0 motor, the 5 speed overdrive tranny, the torque, power, room, tight turning radius, easy to fix

Weakness:

the tailgate, botom rusted out, the double cardan rear driveshaft(which tends to eat u-joints)

This bronco has been the best. the only problems that i have had with it are the weaknesses. it took me a while to find exactly what this has. 5.0, 5 speed, cruise, and captins chairs. this bronco has a 3" complete exhaust system, 31*10.5*15 tires(soon to be 33*12.5*15). the gas mileage in this is not the greatest, but not the worst(the blazer and ram charger gets worse). i am planning on buying a 1995 bronco next when i can get this one to where i like it, so i can have another toy to play with.

When somthing goes bad it costs alot to fix

I've owned 2 bronco in my life. First I got when I was 18, my dad gave it to me on my 18th birthday. He owned this truck since it was new in 1984. It had the straight 6 engine and this thing was a work horse. If your looking for a work horse truck you could go with the hugh deseils or just get a bronco with the I6 engine. We did everything in this truck from cruise the alaska highway to submurging it in the rivers. It now belongs on a good freind of mine who now uses if for hunting and goes through stuff you wouldn't wanna imagine. IT's still running like a dream!

I now own an 1985 bronco XLT. This thing is a beuty, 351 HO, 35" mud tires 4" lift. This thing will turn heads anywhere you go. You can go mudding during the day and it will clean up good enough to take to a concert that night. There is nothing that this or any bronco can't do.
AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR A CONVERTABLE TOP!!!! IT HAS ONE FROM THE FACTORY!!! AND IT'S FREE!

Strength:

Great at pulling, very strong in wrecks. Still runs great with 134,000 miles on a 5.0L and a new transmission. Stock engine. Spacious, great for hauling cargo inside, love the auto-locking hubs/pushbutton four wheel drive.

Weakness:

Fuel efficency sucks. 10 in the city, 13.5 on hwy. Have had to do repairs which were expensive, but worthwhile. Tailgate rusted on bottom, rear window keyhole does not work. Gears for windows (all three) have been replaced, Shimms put into differential, Transfer case rebuilt, trannie rebuilt, Valve cover gaskets and oilpan gaskets have had to be replaced, Idle air control valve had to be replaced. otherwise, GREAT TRUCK

Overall, my Bronco is the best vehicle I've ever owned. Will intimidate anything on the road, will keep running forever as far as I am concerned. Unfortunately I must sell it this summer(summer 2001). Gas money is too much. Will always love that truck. Great for MUDDING. Great room. Still runs great. Rearended a 2001 Cherokee 4x4 with a towing bumber mounted on it and my Bronco only needs a new bumper, hood, and grill. The Cherokee has a bent frame.

Similar Products Used:

Raced it against 1992 Blazer and lost, but that truck is a POS and is lighter than my Bronco.
