Ford Bronco (1996 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The Ford Bronco is a sport utility vehicle that was produced from 1966 to 1996, with five distinct generations. The original Bronco was an ORV (Off-Road Vehicle), intended to compete primarily with Jeep CJ models and the International Harvester Scout. The redesign of the second generation Bronco in 1978 was based on a shortened full sized F-100 pickup. It had a removable top and forward folding rear bench seat, similar to the competing Blazer.

(1980 - 1986) The Ford Bronco received a major redesign for 1980, coinciding with the F-Series pick-up truck. The new Bronco was shorter, and had cosmetic changes along with powertrain, suspension and other odds and ends.

(1992 - 1996) The Ford Bronco, along with the F-Series truck, was updated for 1992. The new Bronco was redesigned with safety in mind, incorporating front crumple zones, rear shoulder seat belts, a third brakelight embedded in the removable top, and after 1994, driver-side airbags.

Strength:

'78 and '79 solid front axle, frame, 205 t-case.
'80 and up 9"inch rear

Weakness:

'78 and '79 weak steering boxes if large tires are used
'80 and swiss cheese frame in an attempt to make it lighter

Amazingly tough trucks, up until 1980 when frame and body designs changed '78 and'79 where built to last, while '80 and up are weaker in frame and drivetrain.

Built Ford Tough. Menacing, safe, very forgiving, never left me standing by the road. Now rare and sought after (who would have known). The best full size truck I've ever driven. A frame and straight axle to die for!!!

Weakness:

With gas at $1.80 - $2.00 a gallon, gas is an issue. Just consider the extra money "life insurance". People will steal parts off your truck when not attended. Steering box failed at 200,000 miles.

I purchased my first and only '79 Bronco Custom in 1984. I was cruising in a Camaro at the time and it was falling apart at every turn. I caught a glimpse at this monster on a dealer lot and investigated further. It was black/black, 63,000 miles, very basic interior (rubber on floor board, virtually no additional optins). I subsequently, after several visits to the lot, coughed up the $6,300 for the menacing creature. It became an instant love affair. I sold it to my brother with well over 100,000 miles and driven to hell and back, mud, sand, snow, et... for $1,000, he drove it another 2+ years and sold it to our dad for $500.00. Dad has been restoring it for over 5 years and several thousand dollars, now mine again!!!!!

Sold Bronco, bought Toyota "mini-truck" and never looked back, until now. That beautful, hard as nails truck equalled and maybe even surpassed Toyota's reliabilty phenomenon.

Strength:

Probably THE most reliable, the safest, the best handling, and most beautiful trucks ever built. Absolutely the best vehicle I've ever driven.

Weakness:

BEWARE! If you buy one of these, you'll never drive a new SUV, truck, or car again! They are more addicting than any drug could ever be. The gas mileage kind of sucks, but it still gets better MPG than new full-size SUVs

I've owned this Bronco since 1987 and I have to say that Ford broke the mold when they stopped making the second-generation Bronco in mid 1979. I have tried my best to find a vehicle that overall is better than this one and I have not succeeded. I've driven nearly every single SUV, 4x4, and pickup truck made since 1987 and none of them even come close.

With only 145,000 ever built, they have now become one of the most highly sought after trucks in existence and are fast becoming valuable classics.

Strength:

302 v8 is very powerful,reliable engine
5 spd gets little better mpg than a auto (19mpg freeway)
heavy enough to get good traction on trails and hills

Weakness:

none

For this being a custom strippy bronco I am impressed with the smooth and quite ride. So far it has been very reliable. The 302 with the 5 spd trans provide plenty of power for taking on onramps and offroading up hills. The turning radius is excelent for turning around in tight spots or trying to park in a small parking space. The steering is very responsive and is a pleasure to drive. The brakes are very effective and I havent any problems warping rotors like I usually do on other vehicles.
The interior is impressive also,, as this being a abused gov vehicle the interior shows almost no wear with 72k miles. Being in the suv/truck class you ride a little higher than most vehicles that provides excellent visability with no apparent blind spots. I would recomend this type of vehicle to anyone looking for a 4x4 suv/truck. This is one tough truck/suv.

88 toyota 4x4,the sheet metal that are used to make these trucks are very thin, almost like recycled beer cans, very weak!!!, lacking power (v6),vehicle weight is too light to get traction
00 tahoe ,, too damn expensive and the 4l60 auto trans and rearend suck
87 chev 3/4 bad turning radius, long wheel base

After reading most of the reviews here, I can conclude that only a little girly-man or Hillary Clinton type would not like the Ford Bronco. I LOVE sitting up looking down on those little girly explorers. Explorers should only come in PINK. Do you get a dress when you buy one?

It's the most reliable, fun to drive vehicle I've ever owned. I bought it with 35,000 miles on it and since I only drive 7,500 miles per year, I hope to retire with it.

It has more room and style than these new Expedition, Suburban, etc. Expedition? I hope they don't plan on going anyplace more hazardous than their back yard. Blazer? They couldn't blaze their way thru a puddle.

Last but not least I agree with a previous reviewer-- IT'S A TRUCK NOT A #*$&*## SUV!!!!
