Ford Bronco (1996 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The Ford Bronco is a sport utility vehicle that was produced from 1966 to 1996, with five distinct generations. The original Bronco was an ORV (Off-Road Vehicle), intended to compete primarily with Jeep CJ models and the International Harvester Scout. The redesign of the second generation Bronco in 1978 was based on a shortened full sized F-100 pickup. It had a removable top and forward folding rear bench seat, similar to the competing Blazer.

(1980 - 1986) The Ford Bronco received a major redesign for 1980, coinciding with the F-Series pick-up truck. The new Bronco was shorter, and had cosmetic changes along with powertrain, suspension and other odds and ends.

(1992 - 1996) The Ford Bronco, along with the F-Series truck, was updated for 1992. The new Bronco was redesigned with safety in mind, incorporating front crumple zones, rear shoulder seat belts, a third brakelight embedded in the removable top, and after 1994, driver-side airbags.

Strength:

Handles great in the snow. Getting 18mph - this I'm very happy about. Very roomy.

Weakness:

Common part failure.

This is my second Bronco. My first lasted forever. This one turned out to be a nightmare. I put 30k miles on it since purchase. In that time I have lost a drive shaft. The breaklines rotted and began routinely failing resulting in having to replace the entire breaking system. The gas tank rotted and had to be replaced. The driver side door hinges and the window mechanics failed. And now something in the steering column has to be replaced. Needless to say it is back in the garage. I'm going to have to purchase a new tailgate in the near future. This truck has been costing me a fortune. My father and my brother both had '88 Bronco's. They experienced the same brake line, gas tank problems, and tailgate problems. I love Bronco's. And I would probably buy another just because I feel safe it it (expecially in the snow). But Ford should really be ashamed of themselves for the lack of quality in many of the standard parts.

Strength:

Low maintence cost. I feel that I can take it anywhere under almost any type conditions. I like the cloth seats (wet, muddy lab is no problem or concern).

Weakness:

Had to replace the starter, starter relay, and the aluminum thermostat housing. Plastic part in one of the hubs is cracked but are still functional (will be replaced with Warn hubs soon). The throttle position sensor was recently replaced (it took 3 trips to the shop to isolate the problem because the "check engine" light was intermittent).

I bought the 5.0L truck used with 18K miles in 1997. I've left the vehicle stock thus far except for a K&N filter. At 88500 miles, I've very few repairs other than routine/preventative maintence. I must be lucky because I have no body rust and the truck is not garaged. I just wash it once a month and wax it once a year. In NJ they put tons of salt on the road so I make an effort to wash the salt off when the air temp gets above freezing. I wish Ford (or someone else) made something comparable. I don't want a PU or a cushy SUV. I want a Bronco. I get about 15.5 mpg average over the year. I don't really understand why people complain so much. You pay a price for performance (the ability to tow). Read the estimated mpgs on any new truck with a similar towing capacity and payload and you might get a 1-2 mpg higher with the newer engine technology.

Tight turning radius, go any where do any thing rig. It's a BRONCO thing, you gotta love em. Good visability for driving. I am not a small person an it has ample room.

Weakness:

only 20 mpg freeway and 16 around town, but who cares. I sometimes push it to far and have to break out my winch to get me out of a difficult problem.

I bought "Buck", my Bronco, with 59,000 and it now has 182,000 miles. It runs stong and has never failed me any where I have gone. My two dogs love it as they can stick there heads out the rear window as we go on our sunday trips. It is my hunting rig, fishing rig, and all around rig. When the engine/ tranny give out I will replace them and put another 200,000 miles on it. I have a winch on the front and have used it many times and have even brought home an elk in the back of it. We have two bronco's, one large and one small and love them both. I can turn around on a logging road and be going back while others are still looking for a place to turn around. Oh yeah I forgot, I can haul 5 good sized adults with no problem and it is great for launching my boat in tight areas.

Weakness:

Definatley pain rolling down rear window to open tail gate , Gas mileage 11mpg hahaha but so what its worth it

I own a 1993 Chevy silverado with 80,000 miles on it and have had to replace the tranny, and every possible engine component there is , even exaust , rotors etc. Well i decided to get a play Truck with 4x4 since the Chevy dont have it never really needed it. I went out and wanted a Bronco since its Ford and wanted to see if it would be as problemsome as my Chevy . I found one and immediately wanted it i talked the salesman down from $4,000 to $3,425 because i drove so far to see it , anyway it had 114,000 miles on it when i bought it and OMG ive had no problems at all ! As a matter of fact i spent the money i was saving for problems on Flowmaster dual exhaust , 12.5 x 33 x 15 inch Mud terrain tires , ar 22 american racing alloy rims , all the bug guards push guard and winch and a 4" lift kit full suspension lift. It has alittle noise in the rocker cover noisy lifter ittermittenly but still runs sweet. It now has 119,000 miles still no probs this vehichle runs great in the summer awesome in the winter .

Weakness:

I can't even complain about the gas mileage, I knew what I was getting when I bought it.

I LOVE my Bronco. It is the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I bought it in 2001 and it only had 38,000 original miles on it, I have put over 60,000 hard miles over that. It is the 302. Very little repair, or upkeep except the normal stuff. It looks and drives great. I get more compliments on it. It is silver on grey. The perfect truck for every need. It's my baby, they will have to pry it out of my clutch if I die.

Smooth and powerful. Enough room for Mama, the kids, Grandma and several Go-Go girls.

Weakness:

If you complain about gas mileage, you're driving the wrong vehicle. One of the basic rules of physics is that the balance of power and matter will even out. Nothing is free; if you want good gas mileage, get a Geo.

This rig, even though it's the stripped down "XL" model, is sweet. I've added some after-market performance products and would guess that I'm conservatively getting 300 hp from the 351W. It's big, powerful, smooth on the highway and will climb a brick wall. This is our family car. It brings home the groceries on Friday, an 8-pointer on Saturday, and takes Mom and the kids to church on Sunday.

Strength:

Room, Looks(exterior and interior), power, safety, fun to drive, off road capability, features, cheap repairs.

Weakness:

Gas mileage(havent looked, but I'm guessing 14 average at best), a bit hard to see out the rear, going to take some getting used to just driving in tight spaces.

This is my first car, and so far, I love it. It has a 5 speed manual, which is very smooth. It has all power accessories. It handles great, especially because of the short wheelbase(104.7 in.) which is shorter than my dad's Volvo 850. It has the 302 V8 which has a more than enough power for what I need. So far it has had an oil leak, a hole in the tailpipe(together fixed for 20 bucks),and a bad weatherstrip on the tailgate(40 bucks). It runs excellent, the paint sparkles, and there is only rust in a few places. I only paid $1600, and so far, it is worth a lot more than that, even with 150000 miles on it(which it hardly shows at all!). The interior is extremely comfortable, especially the front buckets, and the center console is very useful. The rear bench is also very spacious, but a bit short, although my passengers say it's fine. The trunk is cavernous. Tons of room even with the spare tire and rear seat up. Also the sterio system isn't half bad. Didn't crackle when I put on some high volume music. All in all, this is a great first car/truck, it seems very sturdy and reliable, it will more than serve its purpose.

Old farmer guys and young guys take a second look as they see this little girl in this big impressive truck! It does have alot of power and it is pretty indestructable as I was coming out of a parking spot at a bad angle and didn't realize I was dragging this Camry on my bumper!! Thats the first accident of any kind I've ever had!! It was minimal damage, I paid for the poor girls car damage, Good karma?..I couldn't just take off! I like the bare minimum, utilitarian interior it has, no mud stained carpet! Its basically a street-legal tank! It commands respect.

Weakness:

The "clunking" that others have mentioned. The GAS but, hey I don't drive all the time. (and no, its not a "sissy" mobile.) And also that Ford stopped making them!!

My Big Blue Bubba!! It was love at first sight! I went looking at car dealer and I was looking for a truck, Ford of course, and I saw this gleaming light blue beast! I made a bee line for it! Its very clean and good shape! The dealer was showing me Ford Explorers and Jeep Cherokees and I was not impressed! All I could think about was that Bronco! I am only 5'3 and I am probably a little small for it but it seems to know this and is kind to me. I've taken it in the snow 4x4 and its VERY stable! But, I wouldn't take any turns too fast in anything this tall! It likes the snow and the fire roads I have to go on some times. I like the floor shifter as its more in your control. It does look like it wants to kick yer butt!

Model Reviewed: Bronco XLT Limited Edition

Strength:

Power and definitely the size. I am 6'4" and there is more than enough room for me. Plus with the back seat folded down, you can put just about anything in the back. Of course the 4x4 is sweet. It has enough power to easily pull snow mobiles, wave runners, or ATV's on a trailer.

Weakness:

Gas milage - PERIOD! I get around 10 mpg city and 12 mpg highway. And that's about all I can think of.

For starters...I have always wanted a full size Bronco. Before I bought my 91 Bronco XLT Limited Edition, I was driving a 2000 Nissan XTerra (which I bought new and loved). I decided that I wanted something bigger so I sold it and bought my Bronco in Jan 2002 with 77,000 orginal miles on it. It has the 5.0L 302HP V8 engine in it. Of course I had to put some money into it for repairs, but nothing I wouldn't have had to do with any 91 truck. I haven't had any problems since the repairs 9 months ago (knock on wood). I have 33"x12.5"x15" all terrain tires on it and I have no problem in the snow or off-road. And living in VT, there is plenty of off-road travel as well as snow. The power plows right through the snow - no problems. I am going to fix it up with after market mods in a few years. I have looked into mods, and you can get pretty much anything for the Bronco. I am going to buy a truck style soft top for the summer months (snaps on and off), and keep the removable hard top on for winter. I don't know what else to say other than if you've always wanted a Bronco, and have the opportunity to buy one, then do it!! I have no regrets and neither will you!!
